Over 20 million people watched the International Dota 2 Championships

this has to be more than basketball and baseball right?

No.

2 million viewers at it's peak concurrent for Dota2. So, no.

"The American League's 5-3 victory over the National League notched 11.3 million viewers for Fox on Tuesday" The 2013 World Series game 7 game attracted 20 million live viewers at it's peak simultaneously.
[/I]
"The Home-Run 2014 derby on ESPN itself garnered 5.5 million live viewers."

I'd imagine basketball viewership figures are analogous.

During the Grand Finals, The International peaked at more than 2 million simultaneous viewers. This "does not include ESPN, MTG Europe, or CCTV China TV coverage," a Valve representative told IGN.

Holy shit.

I don't get sports, man. Two teams hit a ball or something for a couple of hours and then one of them is declared the winner usually. Why should I care about some ball and grass field?

ah you are right. 2 million is still good start though.

but thats without ESPN, MTG Europe, or CCTV China TV coverage. China numbers should add alot, especially with pure China Final.

And the comments on IGN, you can see that this is not a PC site xD

1. Major League Baseball All-Star Game: National vs. American, Fox, 11.34 million
2. America's Got Talent, (Tuesday), NBC, 8.53 million
3. Extant, CBS, 8.0 million
4. NCIS, CBS, 7.9 million
5. 60 Minutes, CBS, 7.9 million
6. Under the Dome, CBS, 7.6 million
7. The Big Bang Theory, CBS, 7.1 million
8. The Bachelorette, ABC, 6.9 million
9. 24: Live Another Day, Fox, 6.5 million
10. Unforgettable, CBS, 6.4 million
11. Big Brother, (Sunday), CBS, 6.3 million
12. Big Brother, (Wednesday), CBS, 6.2 million
13. NCIS: Los Angeles, CBS, 6.2 million
14. Blue Bloods, CBS, 6.2 million
15. Big Brother, (Thursday) CBS, 6.1 million
16. Dateline NBC, NBC, 6.1 million
17. Night Shift, NBC, 6.1 million
18. 20/20, ABC, 6.0 million
19. America's Got Talent, (Wednesday, 8 p.m.), NBC, 5.9 million
20. The Big Bang Theory, (Monday, 9:30 p.m.), CBS, 5.8 million

Even the lowest rated "big show" is significantly higher than the 2 million peak.
Look, I get it - Esports and everything, and this is a huge step. but let's not get over-excited. It's best to keep things in check.

2 million concurrent at its peak though

How many people watched the NBA finals?

Whoa whoa whoa, let's hold up here.

It's blatantly obvious it's not going to compete with premiere sporting events yet--i.e. All-Star Games, Finals, World Series, World Cup, etc. I was basing on your average game.

I realize the thread is about the DOTA2 Championships, but I figured it was obvious it wouldn't beat out a prime-time premiere sporting event.

Wouldn't this be more parrallel to a regular league game series given the more fast and loose nature of pro-gaming?

Numbers for the Kings basketball viewership would be amusing.

Imagine how much bigger that game would be if they could have this level of events sprinkled throughout the year instead of just once.

Man, Blizzard lost big time. I used to be a heavy SC2 player and watched all the tournaments, loved the scene, etc; I played BW for a decade. I remember when there were discussions about SC2 being broadcast on ESPN, but shortly thereafter the popularity began to crater as mobas grew in popularity. From not having an in-game stream client to not really fostering a casual player base, Blizzard ruined the game's long term potential.

I'll go back to SC2 eventually obviously (I miss SC2-GAF) but most people moved on to mobas, which I have no interest in.

I was thinking the same thing.

SC2 was THE e-sport for a long time...even when it was competing with LoL. Now, it's fallen of the face of the Earth. I'm not sure how much Blizzard cares, but it's sad to see it decline so much.

I hope you're joking. I see this argument so much, it's possibly the laziest argument to ever exist.

Competition is in the heart of every man. It's what pushes us to our limits and makes us better.

$100 says your hobbies are weird.
