George Lucas Will Be Fully Involved In 'Indiana Jones 5' According To Spielberg

It can't possibly be worse than the last one. Honestly I have more faith in Lucas than Spielberg these days.

Crystal Skull was worse than Phantom Menace.

Oh come on. Crystal Skull may not have been great, but it was better written, better directed, and better acted than Phantom Menace by a pretty healthy margin.

And just a total 'wat' at that Lucas v Spielberg remark.

Crystal Skull was mostly poop. Phantom Menace was shit, through-and-through.

Between the two, only Spielberg has directed competent (if not outright fantastic) movies within the last couple decades. Lucas hasn't put together a great movie since the first Star Wars.

Lucas is back, aye?

I hope they both sit and watch all 4 Indy films.
I hope they watch Crystal Skull 10 times in a row right after that marathon.
I hope they sit there and figure out why it was so awful, and vow to never make those mistakes again.
I hope they watch it 10 more times after that with a crowd of fans to see just how loathed it is.

I just watched an interview with Kevin McCarthy this morning with SS to promote BFG. Kevin asked him if Jaws were made today, would he make Jaws a practical effect, or CGI. Steven said CGI because practical was too much of a headache (though he did back peddle and say practical made him show Jaws more sparingly adding to the tension). So maybe he has learned... Maybe he joked when he said CGI?

Maybe not... Honestly, I'm scared with just Spielberg at the helm after that comment.

(To be fair, I don't think the Shia's vine swinging with monkeys, poor psychic Russian villain conceiving, CGI prairie dog making, fridge hiding, killer ant marching, "The journey is its own reward" cringe writing were all Lucas' doing.)

Immediately thought of this. I know they're "just movies" but the 4th one just soiled me in so many ways. Shia coming out of the smoke at the train station on his motorcycle looking like a ridiculous knockoff of Marlon Brando in "The wild one". The CGI Jumanji monkeys all over the place while Shia does his wacky balancing act on the car. Oh and Indy's buddy who betrays him 3 times.

Not counting the "other dimension" alien shit.

Those people in this industry need family and friends (NOT agents) to tell them "Hey shhh, it's ok, you had your moment in the sun, don't embarrass yourself".

But because of money, hey.

It was just plain bad. Plot was laughable, actors phoned it in etc..
Phantom Menace was bad too but at least the actors tried.

I don't know, I can't watch CS ever again but PM was not as bad as I remembered.

Last good movie from Spielberg was Minority Report. At least Lucas knew when it was time to step down from directing.

Indiana Jones 5 will fully suck.

Prolly. Not in light of this news though.

Geriatric Indiana Jones should not be a thing though. And nah han solo was never as physical as indy was.

And the writer of crystal skull...yikes. I love Spielberg but he didn't necessarily give us a good one last time. Too many suspect variables here.

And honestly I found phantom menace much more tolerable than indy 4.

Can he get Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish to rewrite this please? Tintin was far better.

Know how I know you haven't watched Munich?

,,,or Catch Me If You Can?
Or War of the Worlds, or Lincoln, or Bridge of Spies, or The Adventures of Tintin?

War of the Worlds isn't a good movie, I agree with all the others though. Maybe Catch Me If You Can too, but I can't remember if that was just before or just after Minority Report.

I've said it over and over again, but once you get over the slight uncanny valley feel of the faces in Tintin, you realize it's the best Spielberg adventure movie since Raiders of the Lost Ark. Watching behind the scenes docs of that movie was great, you could tell how much fun Spielberg was having with the amazing tech and how great it was for him to finally be able to actually control the camera himself. You can really feel that in the movie. It really shows that he could do a great Indiana Jones again if he wanted to.

Edit: I can't read, you already mentioned Catch Me If You Can.

Yeah, Catch Me If You Can was the follow-up to Minority Report.

I love War of the Worlds - Spielberg botching the ending at the very last second with the kid coming out of the house isn't enough to drag the movie down past "very good" for me.

You expected a kid to die? In a non-Holocaust Spielberg movie?

Motherfucker once had a kid Gymnastics a Velociraptor to death, for fuck's sake.

I'm thinking we are going to get an angry and hungry Lucas after he heard all that shit about the new stars being amazing. I bet this movie will be awesome. I WANT TO BELIEVE.

I feel like this is just Spielberg keeping up appearances for his old friend, when in reality Lucas will have little say on the making of Indy 5. Like, I don't think he'll have the kind of veto right he exercised on 4's script.

Or a teenager run in the direction of a giant fiery explosion and come away unscathed.

I imagine Lucas will be involved to a significant extent, I mean both him and Spielberg are close friends and work in tandem a lot. I don't think he'll be writing scripts though.

They both seemingly respect the other's opinion. I guess it'll boil down to if Lucas wants to get in the fray again.

They've had a long time to think about the criticisms of Indy 4 & Ford himself said he wouldn't do it unless it had " a good script" . I have faith in a proper send off for Indy.

I know what they meant, but nothing about War of the Worlds seemed like "gentle Dad Spielberg."

Plus the reason that ending fails isn't because the kid lives, it's that a key emotional moment in the film was already struck through the notion that the kid died, that we saw it happen, that Ray moved on from it (kind of). It wasn't just Spielberg refusing to kill a kid at the end, it was him basically undoing a part of his own story for the sake of the happy ending. Which is a problem of his (and has been, yeah) but even him fucking that up like he did isn't enough to make me come anywhere close to writing off the movie.

Oh god no....

Because he hasn't made a good movie in about 40 years? He is easily one of the most overrated directors in film.

It's like people have a book or macro of talking points. Does it make them feel better about themselves between big gulps?
