The Nintendo Switch has become the system people love to love

One of the contributing factors is the social acceptance of gaming and of Nintendo's properties. People used to view gaming as something only young children did. Nintendo's properties were mocked as childish. Young adults and older gamers would feel socially awkward gaming in public. The rise of gaming on smartphones changed a lot of this and the sort of nostalgia coolness factor of Nintendo's properties also helps.

This is a great point, and I'd say Pokemon GO especially helped bring Nintendo back into the mainstream to where it's okay (and even "cool") to play Nintendo games out in public.

It's really hard to fathom that this could be as successful, if not more so, than the Wii.

I'm eating plenty of crow on this one. Honestly thought the system existed in this weird space between console and portable that no one actually wanted. Couldn't have been more wrong.

To build on that, I think the Switch benefits from the fact that Nintendo's properties are the sort of thing just about anyone can play in public without worry. Yeah, it'll be nice if it can get third parties later on, but there's far less issues with setting up a game of Mario Kart in a park than playing through the campaign of Call of Duty in the same context. So people are using their Switches out and about, which helps to raise the visibility of the console to casual observers.

This is good. I am not a fan of the portability or the power level personally, but a win for Nintendo is a win for gaming is win for gamers. Anyone who is is against Switch...I don't understand that position.. even not being an adopter (yet) myself. I get less skeptical as the months go on as to this being a big win for Nintendo. Glad people are digging it and hope some really good IPs(and obviously the standard great first party on existing IPs...and Metroid) come out of this hardware cycle for Nintendo. This may or may not be a system for me, but glad it is appearing to resonate with folks more so than the WiiU.

it's certainly a very appealing console and messing around with its modularity brings a satisfaction that only Nintendo can bring

it's easy to love

Happy for Nintendo doing good but I feel it's a console for people who love Nintendo. I'm not their target audience anyway ( their Ip's does nothing for me ) but it's always a good that things are heading in the right direction.

It's the system that changes the way I look at video gaming. It makes me hope all video game systems will be like this in the future.

Nintendo created a smash hit of a device and now I hope third parties show up and make great content for it.

I'd much rather see a hybrid PS5 than just a PS4 with better PC components. I don't even see a reason to buy a PS4 Pro at this point.

Is the Switch worth it if you don't really have anyone to play with?

Been wondering if I should go with a Switch or a new PC this summer.

Edit - Just wandering if I need IRL friends who have a Switch to enjoy it like the above posters seem to do.

It's a bonus for sure, but playing mario kart online isn't bad either. Thing is we still don't know how much to pay for that later on. But even then, being able to play stuff like Zelda wherever you want is wonderful.

I don't know, outside of Zelda and now Mario Kart, this device does not feel like a Nintendo device. It's more steril than what they've done in the past.
maybe if they brought back UI music and eshop music it would feel more Nintendo...

I was gonna say I'd wish there was a pause in the graphics tech race so companies can focus on getting good graphics out of Switch like hardware rather than just powerful giant boxes under our TVs, but I didn't feel like getting hated upon because of it.

It is the first console in a long time that got me excited at all. The Super Nintendo and Dreamcast were the last times.

The Switch is also insanely sexy, whenever I whip it out I see people looking at it with wide eyes, yearning to have it as well.

I get the feeling people want to try to sell the Switch as the new Wii where everybody is wanting one.

I believe the truth is the opposite. I personly love to play games, even collect them but Im just emberassed to play them in public places (train, metro etc).

Bwahaha. Really now?

Portability and versatility trump raw graphical power.

I think it helps that we've finally reached a time where 'console quality' graphics are doable on the go, but credit has to go to Nintendo for the amount of consideration that has gone into the design of this thing. Barring a couple of niggles (charging port on bottom, crappy kickstand, early joycon connectivity issues and cheapo dock) I can't really see what they could have done better to deliver the concept they envisioned.

I'm absolutely enamored with this thing and can't wait to see what else is coming in the future.

Some things could have been handled better but overall Nintendo has done a ton of things right with Switch.

It's a joy to use. Wonderful piece of tech that works flawlessly and I'm very optimistic about the library it will build.

Having a game like BotW on the go is fantastic, especially as someone who rarely gets much time to play these days.

You feel embarrassed to play the switch? Really? it looks exactly like a tablet and people play those on journeys all the time. No ones judging you bro.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Being able to just switch between portable/table top gaming and the big screen is just a big deal. But the fact that the joycons are always ready for some local coop action just puts it over the top.

Man...if Animal Crossing Switch has some kind of local coop/multiplayer mode....

People love their new toy? Hold the fucking presses

I never understand this logic. Why be ashamed of something you love and the majority of the world embraces? No-one gives a shit if you play games, they most probably do too

I never take my portable systems with me. But I'm considering buying a carrying case because I know my friend would love to play some Mario kart against me on her lunch break and the Switch fully allows that. It's funny as I never saw myself even using it as a handheld system.

What really struck me about the Switch is exactly how fluid it morphs from one to the other: when docked it functions as a typical and fully-functioning console (if somewhat less powerful than its peers), and when undocked it is the most powerful handheld by a mile, and it also gives (imo) good playtimes: I get 3 hours out of BOTW and 4 hours out of MK8D, which is more than enough in my eyes.

That the Switch allows me to decide how I want to play a game at any given moment is what makes it such an incredible system for me.

Whats the stock situation like in the UK for the Switch?

Seen its out of stock in the main shops but have no idea about how much they get replenished etc.

Even though it only has one main game im interested in right now (Zelda of course) i have been getting the urge to get one for that and the eventual Pokemon Stars and Mario releases but the only place i have found it is in CEX and would prefer to get a brand new one at retail price if possible.

It does seem to have that weird fanaticism that defined vita owners.

Yup. I don't know, it seems... fine. The hardware seems alright and the library is nothing special aside from the obvious duo. I don't really have a portable lifestyle so maybe I'm just missing that element of it, but the Switch mania isn't hitting me at all. I didn't pull the thing out of the box like "oh my God, I have to play this as much as possible" - I started laughing at the joycons.

It's so similar to Wii U in many ways and yet, it feel completely different. I hated the Wii U. I adore the Switch.

This is a big difference. The Wii U was too hard to explain so people didn't talk about it. They became embarrassed of it.

The Switch is not only easy to explain, but you can actually show it off. I've seen it out in public quite a bit lately. I was at a first holy Communion reception, and some of the older kids were playing it. Each time I've gone into NYC lately I always see someone playing it one the train or waiting for the train.

local co-op on the go is the best feature to me for this console, and is bolstered by the hybrid design so I can play with friends and family even when I'm not on a couch at home.

Switch is a game changer for me in that aspect.

Varies place by place. I know a local store that still has some new units for sale (though not sure if they'd have a slightly bumped up price); otherwise it's just pure luck as to whether or not franchises like GAME will have them in stock right now. Online, no, they're pre-ordering for when they get the next batch.

Greg Miller seems to be all about the Switch so yup.

The thing I've been noticing in contrast to 3DS and Wii U is that people(and the media) are saying "I'd love to play x game on the Switch.".

What does that even mean? People should enjoy the Switch less because the WiiU sucked? People shouldn't talk about their Switch because the WiiU sucked? Does enthusiasm upset you for some reason?

Polygon being positive about something says a lot.

I did not expect the Switch to be loved this much to be honest.

I started seeing the signs when there was that Switch hardware review before launch, (I forgot from what site) it was an email conversation between two guys where the one talking about the Switch had no interest in the system initially but once he started playing it for the first time he couldn't get enough of it because of the convenience of what it can do.

I wonder if the surprise twist for the Switch is that it represents what portable gaming was actually evolving towards for some time.

Smartphones have taken over for bite-size microgames, meant to be poked at for a few minutes during a commute. Meanwhile the DS and 3DS were increasingly powerful and capable of hosting full console style games. People tended to used them differently than the traditional image of the portable; they were like micro-consoles for longer play sessions around the home or somewhere else.

Perhaps that is the secret with the Switch. There was a hidden demand for a device like this, upon reexamining the way in which the previous generation of portables was really being used by players.

Pretty much it's the vita part 2. I think some of it would be inherent though as it's by far the most powerful portable and has reasonable hardware. People that like playing portably would express those desires much like with the vita.

Just picking up my Switch, immediately playing Binding of Isaac or Mario Kart, this is what I wanted.

Looking forward to what Nintendo has planned for E3.

To the people who are saying they don't need the portability or versatility, it's not something you really realize until you actually get your hands on it. You're going to be playing Zelda or Mario Kart going, "damn I need to take a dump" and then have that light bulb moment where you realize you can just take it with you.

After that, it's really remarkable how much this device inserts itself into your life to give you more time to play games. Maybe this is common if you're coming from a handheld fan's perspective, but from a console perspective it truly is remarkable.

For the past decade or more, the phrase "I love Nintendo's games, but I hate their hardware" has become pretty common.

So yeah, I'd say "hold the fucking presses" indeed, without sarcasm.

Yeah I knew this was different the moment every single previewer in January said how amazing and sleek the hardware is. Nintendo does not typically make hardware that is desirable to own, and usually the hardware is the barrier to getting people to buy their games.

This time the hardware itself is actually a selling point. That's a remarkable difference from previous Nintendo hardware.

But the hardware is here, it has appeal and is liked by pretty much everyone who has actually played it. So we can conclude that "I like their games but the hardware sucks" won't be as present as it was the last decade.

This is fair. I've definitely considered Nintendo hardware the penalty you have to pay for Nintendo games for as long as I can remember now.
