You might want to turn back clock 5 or 6 years and try changing the past there. Or 12, if we want to strictly look at who started it (It was Nintendo, of all places)*
But the point is writing has been on the wall for - a decade or so, and people kept throwing money at upgraded consoles & raving about patched games supporting that, so we only got ourselves to blame for it being the norm now.
*So I was a bit facetious up there about who started it - the very first console game I know was doing graphical modes that had large performance ramifications, was also soundly ignored by the market (MSR). And resolution/performance modes were happening throughout PS2/Xbox and PS3/360 generation, just not by that explicit name, and outside of lone DF article, were also largely ignored by the market. Come to think of it - maybe it's all DFs fault for telling people to care about it (starting with PS4 or thereabouts) - and then everyone did all of a sudden
Upgraded/faster mid-gen revisions were totally Nintendo though.

Pretty funny this thread pops up this morning as my family got together last night for one of my nephews birthday parties that I game with who cheats like crazy on his PS4 and he texted me before hand saying he couldn’t wait to show me what his mom found for him.
I totally expected a PS5 and he switched over to PC gaming with a prebuilt 5800x 3060ti from Best Buy but his decision was based on everything being cross platform as he mainly plays Fortnite and Warzone
But PS did lose him to PC

Childish reasons aside, there's the implication that exclusive games use secret sauce and are thus better than multiplatform games. This hasn't been true for a decade now, but that idea is now entirely dead since all PS5 games will be made with a potential PC port in mind.

PS games will now all release on PC, this wasn't Sony's plan a few years ago, things changed. PlayStation games will soon release on PC within very short windows or even day one.
MS started doing it in 2016 and Sony is clearly going in the same direction since sharing games with PC barely affected Xbox position in the market.
If you are someone that likes to play on PC now it might not make much sense for you to get a console just for exclusives, if you are someone that doesn't like to play on PC it doesn't change much for you.
From Sony's perspective if you were getting a PS for just for a handful of exclusives you are actually in fact the least desirable costumer for them and they are more than fine if you end up just getting these same games on PC and someone else getting a PS5.

They also were almost never a thing - like looking at PS2/PS1 libraries - virtually all popular 3rd-party 'exclusives' were multiplatform even back then (or years/decades later - like Spyro & Crash
). 1st Party stuff was being ported all over the vendor owned hardware too(or sometimes to competition - Age Of Empires on PS2 anyone?) - the much maligned 'cross-gen' stuff has been common-place for decades. Lest we forget GT2k/GTHD etc. - Polyphony has been trying to do cross-gen GTs for 25 years.Availability wasn't as consistently wide-spread across available platforms - but that was more retail stiffling certain types of releases than lack of motivation to port.
I'd argue that what remaining 'permanent' exclusives exist are mostly so because they were just too niche/unpopular for anyone to revive/port in the first place.

no, goalpost for that is already armed and set
- pc games do not launch on first attempt, they will always ask something or cause some disruption that will stop it from running. almost all games will require half an hour of tweaking/installing stuff for it to launch and work as expected
- once you are in game, you have to configure graphical settings and options for at least 30 hrs (even if the game is only 6 hrs). you must also graphically compare and contrast with other games and make remarks about their quality. to be a qualified PC gamer, you must write at least 2 essay with 2000 words regarding on the optimization and graphical aspects of the said game
- if you couldn't reach a satisfactory graphical settings after 30 hrs of tweaking, join the hordes of vocal minority on forums that bitch about game being unoptimized, not being able to get 1440p 120 fps at ultra settings with a gtx 1070
- games always crash, they don't properly function, it is impossible to enjoy a PC game more than 1 hours
- it is quite impossible to just enjoy the game, you play the "metagame" instead. anyone who says otherwise is a blatant liar who wants you to change your view on consoles/PC and buy a PC instead, so that they can get their funding from Jensen. agenda is strong with people like us, no no, we don't actually defend PC against baseless accusations certain people always make. We instead, are indeed trying to sway you in favor of PC so that we can fund TSMC/jensen/lisa su

if you think about it, assuming in worst case scenario PS gamers moved to PC and the whole console industry is dead, i believed eventually Sony is going to close down PS game studios.
I dont see Sony is interested to be a thid party publisher as most of their profit coming from PS Subscriptions.
So basically: PS console dead = no more AAA games from Sony.

As long as games come out on PlayStation, that's where I'll by them. I'm not a PC gamer, but I also don't have anything against pc gamers.
I don't mind ps games coming to PC, it doesn't make sense to do day and date business wise. Regardless I don't mind either way. My Playstation ego doesn't get hurt when other people get to also play awesome games.

Sony trained us over x number of years to believe exclusives do matter. It was really only 1 year ago that “Only on Playstation” was the tagline they were running with. Now we are to forget about it and go along with what they want to promote next. Just because I guess.

For third party games, like Forspoken for example. Sony loves to be transparent. They’ll put fine print at the bottom “limited exclusive for x months”.
But for their own first party games which we now know are also timed exclusives, there is no such disclaimer. It’s disingenuous and they’re taking us for a fucking ride.
Remember when we all thought HFW was a PS5 only game? I do. They weren’t transparent about that either.

There's nothing exotic about the PS5. It uses customized AMD APU's. Even the SSD is just a gen 4 NVME drive. You can already buy SSD's that are faster than the one in the PS5, they're just very expensive atm. The days of exotic console hardware died with the PS3. PC's won't bottleneck one bit. By 2025, even entry lvl gaming PC's will be more powerful than the PS5.
Going forward, first party (singleplayer) games will be developed for PS5 first and then ported to PC by Nixxes (their internal PC porting studio) a couple of years later.

Playstation games are still *Console Exclusive and Sony bought Nixxes for this very purpose.
The dev teams can focus on making the game work on one console.....then "port" it to PC later.
It wouldnt/shouldnt affect the quality of the games from Sony atleast.
Todds point is that needing to only optimize for one console is easier than needing to make games work on Switch/Playstation/Xbox/PC.....giving them ore time to do better.

It wasn't a lie. Demon Souls Remake, Ratchet and Clank A Rift Apart and Returnal are all only playable on PS5. And when was HFW announced as a PS5 only game? The article you linked says nothing about that.
As far as suing Sony for their "Only on PlayStation" line......good luck with that.
