Tik Tok Ban Passed (Lock if political?)

I kinda hate this line of thinking *IF* this is the true reason. If people weren't dumb enough to try and paste everything about themselves with their real identities and locations this wouldn't be an issue. Ban TikTok in a year, cool. But it's shown at this point people will bounce to the next thing and the next thing: this won't stop the next attention seeking app from taking it's place and we're in the same spot all over again.

Is it just the scale of TikTok that gets them singled out? Just seems silly to me to focus on one app that's run by China, but let people still use Temu, or Genshin Impact even.

It's that plus the amount of data being shared including self expression that the Chinese government might find disagreeable. Plus every US employee ultimately reports to a manager in China and you can't tell me that under pressure they wouldn't immediately cave and provide whatever information the Chinese government wants under fear of reprisal. The US CEO can sing to the heavens this has never happened but that's just plausible deniability out of his control. US companies share actual criminal activity on occasion and they share data with advertisers but unless you're a conspiracy theorist they aren't the thought police: you might get banned for wrong think on Meta but you aren't going to be arrested or killed IRL.

Hilarious given how much every other major tech company gives up to the US government. I wish the bill was more of save these tech companies from government interference than singling out a specific platform.
 
I've always been ok with this because of China's walled internet. If you shut out all of our internet companies don't complain when we do the same. Not that i think that's the motive.

Yeah I am not sure how this ban does any of that. This seems more protectionism for US social media platforms than some kind of defending the nation. If it was an actual security and espionage risk why are they giving them a year?
 
tiktok aint no saint but twitter has just as much brain rot, if not more.

Plus, the Chinese dont' even use tiktok. It's different app called douyin.

Nope they've been slowly working on migrating servers for the past several years but the ownership of TikTok is 100% Chinese as is the code: I have both Doyin is literally the same app coded by the same Chinese engineers and every US employee reports to a Chinese manager using Bytedance's internally developed tools and software.
 
I think tiktok is much better for marketing indie games than youtube shorts or instagram, so its a big loss really.

China won't let them sell due to the loss of face it would bring which shows just how much influence they really have so after the ban happens in earnest I fully expect the content to just migrate to Instagram Reels or YouTube shorts…all the most popular stuff from TikTok just gets reposted there by top content creators anyway albeit later than TikTok. Hell X could bring back Vine and replicate the short form format easily.

I won't put TikTok on my new phone. Something about it is too suspicious. It's too good to be true. If another country wanted to spy on us all they need to do is scratch our social media itch.

I do think that TikTok, and social media in general, is gonna royally fuck up humanity's youth, but this isn't the way to address it.
 
I wish that all brain damaging social medias to cease to exist. But seriously, one have to be stupid to think espionage is reason enought when theres probably a fuck lot of similar social medias from US that does the same.

Conspiracy theories aside the US government has to generally follow legal due process to obtain information on social media users from Social Media companies and establish criminal intent: they're looking for stuff like kiddie porn and terrorist threats not trying to jail political dissidents criticizing Winnie the Pooh/Xi Jin Ping or to commit genocide against Uighur's. China doesn't even allow US social media companies to do business in the country because they can't control it.

I'd generally would say that banning TikTok is government overreach but I'd argue that in this instance it's reciprocity, its insane that China bans...

I hope Bytedance doesn't sell. I want Americans to actually see something they like disappear because government interference. Maybe it'll make them realize that these random people they vote for do have consequences.

Well I'm against government interference as much as the next guy, but this time I'm actual 100% behind the decision to ban Chinese spy and propaganda tools.

If people were a tiny bit smarter they wouldn't be using TikTok anyways. And like the other guy said, US apps are illegal there so why are we allowing their apps?

But content discovery algorithms work much better on tiktok than ig or youtube shorts. I follow couple of twitch indie gamedevs and they have gotten much more wishlists from tiktok than alternatives.

I completely agree that Tik Tok is a weapon being welded by China against the Western youth, but I have to wonder how it ever got so far in the first place. Who was asleep at the wheel or did someone look the other way for political or monetary reasons.

Banning Tik Tok does not solve the real problem: feeble-minded and easily manipulated people across several Western countries. We actively discourage critical thinking so that big multinationals can better sell shit to you that you don't need. China just hooked on to that trajectory and pushed it to its logical extreme.

Sure, how about we start by not calling it TikTok ban and calling it what it is? "Government wants the ability to ban applications and platforms on a whim"?

It is always like this… whip up an enemy, make it scarier and scarier and front news as much as you can, allow for easy soundbites "but the CCP", and then use it to justify a "something must be done, here is something" strategy that vastly overreaches government control.

If you feel a tad guilty bundle it with aids to Ukraine and Israel / Gaza war funds so that you have less chances of people delaying its approval. Also, make sure everyone calls it TikTok ban, do not allow the narrative to shift into what this enables but just focus it on TikTok and the CCP fear.

Sure, you need to accept the good and the bad. Same thing with regards to our justice system: fundamentally do you prefer innocent people in jail for the potential of not having criminals getting away with it or do you want to err on the side of potentially letting criminals walk but trying to ensure innocent people do not end up in jail with their lives ruined?

Both have consequences, the former choice is likely also the most unlikely to hold though, but it does not stop people to wish for easy solutions to complex problems.

The point being America has this obsession with 'muh freedoms' waaaaay worse than any other democratic nation on this planet. To the point at which it becomes somewhat farcical.

Most Americans are pretty sensible and figure there's got to be a balance, but all the rest of world tends to hear from are the seemingly endless idiots who scream and scream about not wanting a government that interferes with their lives at all... and then also scream and scream when that government doesn't do something they want. Or even worse, they applaud and cheer in supreme hypocrisy when it does.

I'm for the ban and wish they'd do the same in the UK and Europe.

It's not just the China spy angle, which is a very real threat, but the fact that Tik Tok in China is heavily regulated in China with a 60min daily limit for under 18s and 40min daily limit for under 14s. I've read that there's a heavy promotion of educational content over there too.

Meanwhile kids here are exposed to absolute vapid horrible shit and see the worst society has to offer. Just a lot of nonsense and junk.

There's little doubt in my mind Tik Tok and a lot of social media is very damaging to kids and is gonna mess up a generation or two. Sad stuff.

I don't think the damage and distorting affects of social media is exclusive just to the youth. I know a few adults who use Tik Tok that end up believing some real BS because of some of the stuff they watch regularly on there. I guess at least they have the mental capacity to recognise the harms of excessive use and can perhaps pull themselves away from it, whilst most kids don't.

There was somebody on the Joe Rogan podcast that was convinced the TikTok ban was due to them just out performing or so hugely dominant that it's cannibalizing western social media in profits and ads. It's getting banned because Mark Zuckerberg is butt hurt, according to him. I don't remember the name.
 
TikTok sucks and is an active detriment to society, and frankly I wish it didn't exist.


With that said, no government should ever be dictating what media we choose or don't choose to consume. Very bad precedent and I'm against this.

Hell, when I was in china they even banned pinterest. God forbid I learn how to make oven mitts.

I would have to read everything this bill contains before making a decision. The last tiktok bill gave the US government way too much overreach.

TikTok is brain cancer and it's appalling that parents let their children/teens have unmonitored phones with free access to all this trash. Knowing that you allow your kid to sit on TikTok is all I need to know about you as a parent.

Plus, China is a wholly untrustworthy nation at best, at worst an outwardly uniformly evil force in the world.

But then, so are the US's intelligence agencies. And they have their own motives for banning any platform they can't control. So we have a battle between evil US spying & intel versus evil Chinese spying & intel. Just great. There are no winners.

The only way to win is to get your family off of social media.

It's the lack of education and strict guidelines.

Anything that focuses on youth should be heavily regulated, and schools should start giving education in modern day problems such as social media etc etc.

Instead they allow the kids to just free roam get fully hooked without warning and they become drug addicts as results.
