Tik Tok Ban Passed (Lock if political?)

TikTok sucks and is an active detriment to society, and frankly I wish it didn't exist.

With that said, no government should ever be dictating what media we choose or don't choose to consume. Very bad precedent and I'm against this.
It should be govt regulated by age. We do this for smoking. For alcohol. Movies. and even video games. Tiktok and other social media apps should be regulated the same way.

We have seen stark rises in child and teenage depression and mental health issues in the last decade or so. This is all tied to social media. When you and I were growing up there were wars everywhere, terrorists attacks traumatized an entire generation of people who watched the murder of 3000 people live on their tvs. And yet these kids are far more traumatized.

I have tried my friends to stop spending all day on tiktok and facebook to no avail. You cant convince adults to give up drugs. But kids? its our responsibility to take things from them lol.

P.S My 9 year old is going through this right now. I have shielded him the best i can but his friends consume this trash and most of them are shown shit by their moms. Like actual war stuff which is then unloaded on to my son by his traumatized friends and im like wtf kind of mother shows her kids this shit. Parents cannot be expected to use common sense.

I don't think this is about the media we consume as much as it is how people use it. The government doesn't care that people are giving themselves retarded tiktok brains by watching Fortnite dances and shaking their asses for money for hours on end.

The government is worried that it's a conduit to funnel sensitive information straight to the Chinese government because people share everything on social media without a second though. If tiktok is owned by an American company then the government can at least pull someone into congressional hearings and toss someone in jail if China gets the secrets. They can also get secret warrants that allow them to monitor the traffic on these services. As is there's little they can do to monitor and enforce espionage laws regarding tiktok because the moving parts are in places they can't go.

I know someone who’s 6 year old kid does nothing but scroll TikTok on an iPad all fuckin day. Horrible parent.
i was one of those parents but my kids watched youtube and netflix trash. last year i got sick of it and took away their ipad and hid it. but now i cant find it for my own use lol.

people dont realize just how much trash is on youtube kids. netflix is slightly better but even that is just dumb mind numbing content. not the disney or saturday morning cartoons we grew up with.

I do think age restrictions are reasonable. Disallowing the app outright is not.

But then where do we draw the line? Are we banning League of Legends next? It's owned by Tencent, a 100% Chinese company.

I was made to go outside and find something to do as a kid lol. Now it seems most people just shove tablets at their kids and let the tablets parent.

It's the lack of education and strict guidelines.

Anything that focuses on youth should be heavily regulated, and schools should start giving education in modern day problems such as social media etc etc.

Instead they allow the kids to just free roam get fully hooked without warning and they become drug addicts as results.

Wat raar dat iets dergelijks vanaf FB etc al niet in het onderwijs verwoven is.

Zo "raar" 🤣

Ik zie de gevolgen al bij een vriendiens dochter op het moment. SMH.

Schools? Sure, but that should be second or maybe even third on the list. It is the job of parents to teach and regulate this stuff.

Too many parents want to be friends with their kids, not their parent. Those are not the same at all.

We banned TikTok in our house several years ago and I’m super happy we did it. TikTok is a cancer. Typically I wouldn’t support actions like this but this one doesn’t bother me one bit. I understand it’s is probably hypocritical

Well there are multiple levels at play here in a dynamic context.

If the goal here is really about foreign spying and data privacy, then it's pointless in light of the complete lack of regulation we have on data harvesting and selling. China can simply buy all the data they need, they don't need TikTok.

I suspect the issue here is more to do with the bills it's packaged with and the threat that alternative information spheres play in shaping American opinion on foreign policy affairs.

Indeed. I'm not assured these opposing powers aren't in cahoots in some way seeing this play out the way it does. Extreme lackluster use of very fundamental policies imho.

It's almost like; wait wait wait... DONE. Now moving on to gradually act as if this is bad.

Come on.. really?

Context matters. If League of Legends had the scope and reach of tiktok it would probably be under the government's microscope, too. It's not just about it being a Chinese company. It's about it being a platform from a Chinese company that's partially owned owned by the Chinese government that's purposely designed to funnel the private information and communications of millions of people, 170 million of which are Americans, through Chinese servers. Tiktok itself being banned in China while being owned by China is a huge and suspicious red flag.

The US government wants it to be owned by a US company so that everything can be funneled through American-based servers so that they can get the FISA court to issue warrants to allow it to do the very thing they're afraid that China is doing, with the added benefit of being able to hang someone out on charges if they find sensitive information.

But everything is funneled through American Servers and this is subject to warrants.

The only known sharing of Data with China was a whistleblower alleging some spreadsheets of specific data were sent to China, and they were for the most part for fairly benign corporate uses as far as anyone could tell.

I mean fuck China and all but I personally don’t think this is a major issue. Also not going to be upset if the app is banned or if they sell though.

If your kids are determined to get access to TikTok or any other social media, they will get it. You can think you're the authority figure all you want, but just like we all managed to sneak shit around our parents, so can your kids.

We regulate our kids access to social media the best we reasonably can. But to some degree, they need to be allowed to make their own choices. Personally, I feel that from age 14-18, they are young adults in training. If you try to control them too much during this period, they either stop listening to you and make lots of bad decisions on their own, or you crush their spirit and they don't grow up into mature adults who can make their own decisions. When they turn 18, and 21, and 25, and 32, and 40, they're going to have to live with the cancer that is social media. Not that a government ban is going to do anything, but the idea that parents should ban their kids from it seems equally dumb.

If the ban results in this app being sold off to a U.S. company who can better regulate it and stop the information collection by the CCP, I'm all for it. Microsoft showed some interest last time. Hopefully they're still up for it.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

This is true, but my personal philosophy with my kids was always not to just take away the bad things from them, but also to teach them why those things are bad and need to be taken away. When they were really little, they didn't quite understand why they weren't allowed to watch certain TV shows that their friends could, or why they didn't get screen time an hour before bed - but in time they grew to understand.

Social media is still blocked at the network level at my house, and my kids are now in their mid to late 20s. They don't care that it's blocked. They both have cell phones that could easily access stuff like TikTok, but they don't. Instead, they can see first hand the type of brain rot it's bringing about with their peers (especially those that grew up with it) and (I think) they're happy it wasn't ever something they had access to.

Funny enough, my brother and his wife (who are in their mid-30s) stayed at our house a few months ago and complained that their phones weren't able to get on TikTok when they were on our Wi-Fi.

US social medias are banned in China; you can't access to WhatsApp, Twitter or Google there, unlike you use a VPN. So it's seem fair to ban Chinese social medias in the US.

I think they should do the same for video games: Chinese companies shouldn't be able to have more than 49% of a western company, and they should partner with a wester company to launch their games in the US (as Blizzard is forced for deal with NetEase or someone else if they want to allow Chinese players to access their games).

I like YouTube shorts better. Also China purposefully pushing different code/algorithms for China vs the US was always sketchy.

It would be best if we just banned all minors from social media and from accessing porn entirely 👍

Conspiracy theories aside

What conspiracy? Brazil already had a case of full surveilance done by US and the response from US country was like "it was for the greater good, we did it and will do it again".

If they gonna ban Tik tok so be it. As I said, the better those mind affect medias out of picture the better. But don't call out other countries for something that you basically do as well.

Tik tok is horrible, everything they say about it is basically true... but banning it is not cool..

Anyone notice the TikTok ban was embedded in the same bill that provides weapons to Azov Nazis, the genocidal IOF, & KMT nationalists? It was called The 21st Century Peace Through Strength Act.

Doesn’t China force US internet companies to sell out to Chinese companies to have a presence in their country?. If that is the case then what’s good for them is good for us. If not then it’s an overstep on the US side. But I think it’s more like giving them a taste of their own medicine.

Law the passed is overly broad and can target other social media companies & websites. I suspect this'll get used elsewhere in a few years.

The state I live in just put up a state wide age block on all porn sites recently. You have to enter a government ID and social security # that gets stored by a third party company outside of the US. Really feeling the freedom.

These new laws have been enacted in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Kansas, Utah and Virginia this year. I don't know if they've been challenged yet in court, but I assume that's coming. More states are discussing jumping on board, like Missouri. I'm in Kansas.

If they can ban porn and TikTok, literally nothing is safe at that point. Basically living in a VPN required country.

Im all for banning corn for kids but adults shouldnt have to give their social security number. a simple call to the provider should do. or have the ISP simply provide a portal for the account holder to enable corn. and then i can use my router to set parental controls for my kids.

Im not fucking giving up my social security number for this shit. are they fucking insane.

That would be a much more logical approach. Just have it be a mandated setting when setting up internet that you have to enable or disable. They want it to be as inconvenient and overreaching as possible. The more they get away with, the more they set precedent for just going further.

I'd generally would say that banning TikTok is government overreach but I'd argue that in this instance it's reciprocity, its insane that China bans...

Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
Snapchat
Google
Youtube
Wikipedia
Reddit
TikTok

So they don't allow our companies to operate there then why should we allow their social media companies to operate here.

Agreed.

Just my not out loud spoken opinion.

Also, why are the policies so black and white?
