As much I looked forward to it, once I got the game I was terribly disappointed.

If only for the reason that traversal was stupid. I had to slow walk everywhere because if it ran it meant my health/hunger/stamina meter (it seemed like it was an all in one meter) would go down way faster and I would constantly have to eat food to keep it up.

If they removed that aspect alone I would have kept playing.
this is what made 3 trash in my eyes have a new mode that takes that out and i will play it and most likely enjoy it.

Hardcore fan of the series here, they really need to do a few things before porting it tbh:

* Stamina system needs to go back to what it was in 1 and 2
* Combat needs more mechanics. Throws need to come back.
* The game's overall appearance feels off. I think some tweaks to lighting would be enough. New consoles should have enough power to manage it.
* (unlikely) Story beats need more punch. There's a lot of build up to meeting Shenhua and finding out about Iwao's past in 1 and 2. 3 really shits the bed here, there are SO many opportunities to meet Iwao's old acquaintances. Find stuff via exploration, etc... Literally none of that exists at all.
* Final act was clearly 90% cut. What should've been a Yellowhead style dungeon is basically a few hall ways with dudes standing around. Give them a few more months and a modest budget and it can be filled out with puzzles, unique enemies, mini bosses.

Even a few of those would be nice to have. But if they wanna test the waters for a sequel, the storytelling MUST be at the bar of 1 and 2. 3 simply isn't there and without the good storytelling, the rest of the game can't carry the experience.

Backed the third game on Kickstarter as the first two games are some of my favourites ever. Never bothered playing it after hearing the impressions. Didn't want to tarnish my thoughts on the franchise.

If they would just change the controls a little it wouldn't be that bad.
Yeah, if they changed the controls, the gameplay, the story, the graphics, the level design, and the name, it might actually be a good game.

The only way Shenmue 4, 5, 6 etc can succeed is if they streamline the gameplay for modern audiences while still keeping the "exploration/QTE" accurate for Shenmue.

SEGA not giving the rights to Suzuki to use the Virtua Fighter engine definitely hurt Shenmue 3 (that battle system is horrible). And like others have pointed out it was a damn anime filler episode that focused too much on "capsule toys" mini games, grinding for money and an annoying stamina system where you are forced to eat.

I wouldn't mind other studios giving a go at the franchise.

  • (Yakuza series) Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios is an obivous choice
  • I'd actually prefer the battle system of "Sleeping Dogs" and that gameplay to the Yakuza series
  • Let's see David Cage give it a try. Heavy Rain/Beyond Two Souls' style is basically Shenmue (at least the narrative will be the main focus)

There's a shitton of animosity for this series, I'll say that.

Why can't people be happy that a fanbase might be one step closer to seeing a series finish that they really want to?

Game didn't make $6.3 million on Kickstarter because. It obviously has a very dedicated following. Sure, a bit of that was hype train, but not all.

Shenmue III was a disappointment, but that's okay. People wanted Yu(who isn't young anymore) to finish what he planned. Maybe they'll get their wish and I hope they do.

This forum is ridiculous sometimes. "Glad this studio bombed. Glad this game crapped out, series is ass. Glad this publisher went bankrupt. I hope this series never continues, fuck it, never liked it."
