Nissan and Honda plan to enter into negotiations for a merger to better compete in the rapidly changing automotive industry, the Nikkei newspaper reported.

I don't know if this is big news to anyone else. But reading this made me say wow this morning! Nissan has had a lot of woes in the last decade so it does make a lot of sense.

I loved my xterra. It sucked they discontinued the model. I even had the year of the coolant issue and still would have bought a new one. It was fantastic in the snow.

This is what I was thinking. Nissan is ahead of their plans to be full electric by 2030 while Honda is behind on their plans to be all electric by 2040 in North America. Honda’s only engine plant in Anna, Ohio is still churning out Internal combustion engines while the electric motors are being imported from Japan.

Yeah but Anna just recently got the Dies to start making batteries. One of the main reasons why Honda is pushing back their BEV deveplment is their combustion engine and hybrid sales are still very high. It's been hard for our plant to keep up with CRV sales.

Second, there's been delays in remodeling the plants in Ohio. My plant is gonna have a 4 week shutdown just so that we can be ready for production of the Afeela next year.

Honda is slowly realizing that the adoption of electric vehicles is a lot slower than they expected. So if you're not one of the Chinese makers or Tesla, you're gonna expect slower sales.

I had a Nissad Sentra '98 and my god, it was complete garbage. Worst car ever made.

I had an 89 toyota corrola that ran better than this piece of shit despite being a decade older.

Honda and Toyotas have been very good to me. I will stick with them till the day i die. Lets hope Honda brings their Nintendo magic to nissan, and nissan brings none of their ouya magic to Honda.

Honda is at least having recalls for their issues. Nissan's CVTs downright failed after 50K miles and cost 10K to replace.

Nissan is in terrible shape compared to how they were. They have 100% fully embraced e-trash and soccer mom SUVs and are completely alienating the consumer who wants a sporty mid sized vehicle.

Maximas are no more after the 2024 model. They really are a nice car and its sad that theyve gotten rid of it. Rumor is they are going to re-introduce it within a year or two as a different e-trash sedan. So if you want a car now, you really only have a Sentra or Altima to pick from. They seem to be making each new Altima look more like the Maxima but IMO there's no comparison.

I’m aware of Honda’s recalls. Those only do any good, if the parts are available. And some of their recalls will only include service, if your vehicle exhibits the problem mentioned.

And they’ve had their share of problem transmissions, too.

About a month ago I read something saying Nissan didn't have the cash to last the next year and that they would be looking to sell or merge, I guess that's what's going on here. I've always liked the Xterra and their sports cars and the leaf was one of the first EVs.

Context? Are there efficiency comparsons between Nissan GasEV and typical phev?

Not sure the generator got past the patent stage. But having two separate power trains is the big drawback of a plug-in hybrid. All the maintenance of a regular gas car and hardly any EV range.
A gas generator would be simpler and non-essential, your car would be an EV 90% of the time but with a little more flexibility to use gas to extend the range.
Maybe there are issues with placement of a gas tank and a big battery and an engine, but it seems like it could work, especially in bigger vehicles.

I've had three bullet proof Honda's and I'll be going with Toyota next.

Can’t speak for Nissan’s other vehicles, but both my Frontiers have been great (2004 & 2023). I think if you stick to their trucks/non-CVT vehicles they’re fine.

Nissan is dead weight imo. Their lineup is a mess, their technology is outdated (even in their Infiniti "premium" brand) and their cars tend to be unreliable.

Honda has good e:HEV hybrids which are a good mix of both worlds (no cables, EV power, being able to run a petrol engine only if necessary) and they should keep working on those.

No one's buying the new Z, it's heavily overpriced (and the dealers are charging even more), it's got technical issues and it's still the old Z under the body because Nissan didn't want to spend too much on development.

Cool, didn't realize they moved forward with it as they don't have anything in the US as of yet.
That's my ideal EV set-up, and it having Honda behind it by the time it does reach the US would be the icing on the cake.

EV will bankrupt most autos if change doesn't happen to stop forcing them on the market.

ITT: Lot of people that don’t know how BA Nissan was and their beginnings were.

True race built affordable cars.

S-chassis for life. R chassis <3. Even look at stuff like the Figaro.

Sweet car company. Always punching above their weight in the 80s/90s/early 00s.

Renault’s alliance and stupid euro trash takeover of the brand killed them. Neutered and stopped making fun to drive cars. Yes, even including the bloated Z and exotic-lite GT-R.

I have soft spot for pre-2000s Nissan. My first car was a 91 Sentra SE-R and my second was a 93 Maxima, loved them both. They definitely have sucked for a long time so this can only help them.

The thing is, every car company has an all electric plan and they all happen by the year 2040. I don’t get it. I love my internal combustion engine car…it is very quiet, highly fuel efficient and is very cheap with the licensing and upkeep (in Ohio ICE licensing is $50 while electric licensing is $500 per year).
Consumers are not pushing to go all electric, but car companies insist on that being where the market is going.

Here in Europe it is the politicians who are forcing manufacturers to go all EV by 2030.

Volvo was very quick to jump on the band wagon for example, but in secret they spun off their engine development department into a different company and have continued to develop new engines. And just a few weeks ago Volvo announced that it will not be possible to go all EV by 2030.
So they really didn't believe it in the first place.

Ford has also backtracked on this. And some German brands as well AFAIK.
