PlayStation 5 now ranks 3rd in lifetime hardware dollar sales in U.S. history, trailing only Switch and Xbox 360. The platform currently ranks 11th in lifetime unit sales.

One thing is the parallel reality of the forums where Playstation is finished and is its worst generation and another is the real market where it is breaking revenue records, Hermen's disaster with the gaas does not matter to the general public.

congrats but i will admit iv purchased fewer games this gen than any other PS gen by far. most of my purchases are on PC atm.

Amazing that despite PS massive missteps Phil's complete INCOMPETENCE has allowed PS to just cruise with no competition in sight.

Of course it doesn't.

People just look at the games that are available and where it's possible to play them.

And the vast majority of gamers don't care as much about Sony's missteps as Gaf has you believe.

This is a bubble.

Well yeah because most gamers don't play first party exclusives - your "average" gamer probably plays some combination of COD Fortnite GTA and a sports title(s)

So in their world everything is just fine

I'd bet that if Sony didn't have exclusives, this argument would fall apart. Why? Because the argument relies on exclusives just as much as Sony's revenue does. Their financial success isn't necessarily a reflection of how good or bad this generation is, but rather a testament to how successful their exclusives have been.

How is it not good news?
What do you think will happen in a gen without a direct competitor? Better prices? Better service? More and better games? Without direct competition you most likely will see greed and lazyness. Pc and Switch are not enought, thay have different target audiences.

Yes, that's why most of the drama about Sony's missteps is but a fart in the wind.

PS3 was great. It gave us new IPs Uncharted, Infamous, The Last of Us, Demon's/Dark Souls franchises, plus all the multi-platform new IPs.

It also outsold Xbox 360, which is considered a huge success.

It certainly wasn't outselling the 360 at this point in the generation.

The first party output has been a disappointment so far but I need a box to play games and PS5 is the best option for me. Not surprised it's doing well.

And this is why Sony sees nothing that needs fixing.
They'll see it when they realize how hard selling a PS6 is because of their conduct with the PS5.

edit: The reactions to this post so far are very Xbox fanboy circa 2018-2020. Don't be dumb enough to just allow PS to act like this and be surprised when the PS6 is in freefall. There's no excuse, we've already got an example.

This makes sense, since this is pure, unadjusted hardware dollar sales the main PS5 SKU is $500 and the pro is $700.

It's still a real accomplishment though, since this means that they are selling a lot of units at those prices. It just doesn't mean that the PS5 is more successful than, say, the PS2, relative to inflation.

PS2 didn't have much competition

We need some competition in this bitch
You won't get any in the strict console space, Nintendo is too comfortable penny pinching their HW budget and releasing hybrid low spec systems that sell bajillions, PCMR don't care about consoles one way or the other and Xbox is doing whatever is in their power to become irrelevant asap

This gen is a mess, PS5 is coasting and will continue to do so thanks to GTAVI, if it wasn't for that, they'd feel some pressure to actually do something and release good games

This is only North America. I'm pretty sure total PS3 sells in 2007 were greater than that of Xbox.

Was talking globally, hence why I mentioned the European launch delay.
