Romance in the AC games (it’s been in them since Odyssey) is optional. You don’t even get the dialog options in Shadows unless you activate it.

Romance can have its place in these games, Ezio's romance with Cristina and later with Sofia, or Edward and Caroline and especially Bayek and Aya were all for the better of those games' stories imo.
But romance options, or protagonist options for that matter I agree with you, they have no place in these games.
AC games are at their strongest when they have a very clearly defined path and story, it's no wonder there hasn't been much praise for the story of these games since Origins which was the last one which didn't go full on RPG mode in its storytelling...

There is nothing wrong with romance gay or not as long as there is proper chemistry between them.

There is gay romance in 13 Sentinels and I like those characters a lot.
