WB working on new sequels for: Beetlejuice, Goonies, Gremlin, Matrix, Practical Magic, Gollum, Minecraft

Something to offend everyone.
Actually, it's about time they brought back Gremlins

Now, in an interview with Deadline, the pair have spoken about their future plans and confirm that a bunch of sequels to the studio's biggest IP have been put into priority development.
The list includes a third "Beetlejuice" film, a second "Minecraft" movie, the Drew Goddard-penned new "The Matrix" film, the new "Gollum" film, several Dr. Seuss adaptations, and sequels to 80s/90s classics "Practical Magic," "Gremlins" and "The Goonies".

All those IP while WB comes in like a vampire, milking them for all of their life force.

Ya para que...

Those films should have had a sequel in the 90s or 2000s.

There's no point in making these sequels anymore... It's like Ghostbusters, they no longer have the impact.

Time was the biggest enemy in these franchises, and I always wanted a Gremlins sequel back in the day.

I don't see the point in bringing The Goonies.

Goonies will be an absolute joke that bares little more than a passing resemblance to the original because it deems too many elements to be a problem. It will be a sanitised nothing movie with no charm that only uses the name for a free publicity boost while the Internet is split between making jokes about how the title should be Goomies 2: Goon Harder and being offended by the original truffle shuffle for fat shaming and Sloth for disability shaming.

Matrix was actively driven into the ground by one of its own creators, so at this point a sequel by someone else might as well exist because I don't know how anyone can make it worse. You can't get colder than absolute zero.

I have no faith in any of these titles to have any semblance of quality, but Minecraft will make good money. Gollum maybe, but that franchise had its time and don't know if a return 25 years later will go anywhere.

Disclaimer: I haven't seen Beetlejuice 2 and can't speak to its quality.

I feel like that Gremlins sequel has been in production for like 10 years at this point.

Also - a new Matrix movie, lmao. WB is just the worst.

I loved Beetlejuice 2 but I don't think I want a third one. It was the rare good sequel so please don't push it. As for the rest, creative bankruptcy at its finest. Why would anyone want to go ahead with a new Matrix after Resurrection? It was the worst fucking piece of shit in recent history. I will never pay to see another Matrix, and especially if it's made by the Wachowskis. Trash.

A new Gremlins? If it's made by state of the art puppetry and has a good script it could very well be a cool franchise to revisit. But we all know it won't be. It will be CGI bonanza and look like complete shit. It will be a travesty that shits on the legacy of the first two films, because all the people who made the originals are long gone. Fuck Warner Brothers, what a trash company they've become.

The way they should be revisiting these franchises is with games.

Criminal that we never got a big open world Blade Runner game, old Rocksteady + UE5 would've been perfect for this instead of Suicide Squad. There should be a new Matrix game cause it's just ripe for fun gameplay. And finally they should make a Gremlins game where you just creatively kill vast swaths of Gremlins in various scenarios.

not just that, but Minecraft proves zoomers want their own movies not rehashed millennial shit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... The day Ghostbusters no longer has the main cast or another member of the original dies... The franchise is over.

I'm not interested in new actors.

And I thought Sony was desperate with Horizon.
I even feel sorry for Warner Bros. It's always been a miserable and arrogant company, but in the 80s and 2000s they offered high-quality products... Now, apart from being miserable and idiotic... They offer terrible quality products.

I do feel bad for kids these days that so much entertainment that should be for them is actually just retreads of stuff Gen X and Millenials want to feel nostalgic about. Let them have their own things.

Man they fucked up with Goonies years ago. They had the full cast. Now everybody would be too old and probably their annoying kids or grandkids. Pass.

Wasn't there already a Gremlins cartoon? How well did that do.....tells you all you need to know.

The last Matrix was one of the worst movies in history...

You should leave this franchise alone.
The ONLY way to do the Matrix is to make a film that has an entirely different first act, like horror or silly car racing action, that then cuts into it being another Matrix with NO WARNING. No teasers, no leaks, no insider influencer social media drops......straight up sucker punch the audience.

Alas, these days you could never do it.

I don't think you could ever do that, it's not just today. The closest thing I can think of is Shyamalan's Split, but the only thing that had to be kept under wraps was who appeared at the very end which wouldn't be too difficult to keep secret, and even then most of the film is as advertised, it's just the context provided at the end that clarifies what this will lead to in Shyamalan's next film.

Like, people seem to misremember how much was kept secret back then. Like, people claim, "see, Terminator 2 kept the twist about the T-800 a secret!" Yes, the trailer didn't spoil it…..the FIRST trailer, but the second trailer did give away that the T-800 of 2 was not a villain this time.

Darth Maul's saber being double, another thing that should have been kept secret but wasn't, never mind the soundtrack releasing before the film and one of the final tracks flat out saying which hero dies.

It's nice to wish things, but marketing has wisened up and realized it's almost always better to make it clear what the thing they're advertising is rather than pulling a "gotcha" and hoping for the best. Hell, they briefly did this with the 2016 Blair Witch film, as its initial trailer was titled The Woods (though not to brag, I knew it was Blair Witch already, as while it's very blink-or-you'll-miss-it, but the first trailer has the briefest appearance in the background of one of the stick figures from the original film), and only at Comic Con was it revealed to be a Blair Witch Project sequel, but some people were disappointed and felt it being its own thing was more interesting.

Also, think about what you're suggesting. Not everyone is a Matrix fan, or at least wanted any sequels. But they might like horror, or racing, or whatever, and be down to see that. Imagine their disgust at getting invested in the film only to have the rug swept under their feet halfway through to give them something they didn't pay for. It's not even they didn't like where the movie went, that happens for plenty of people, it's that they didn't even get ANY version of what they paid for regardless of quality. Don't be surprised if a decent amount of people would leave the theater room and try to get refunds. I don't think those theater employees would appreciate that.

Bring in the actors' real kids as their movie kids and have a decent script. Meaningful cameos and it all stays in house.

There is zero creativity left in Hollywood.

I think there's probably loads of creative ideas, but also that there are some fairly big problems with how people respond to things that they don't already recognise. Can a film that doesn't have established characters / is part of a franchise / is a reboot really expect to be a big success in 2025? There were LOADS of films made last year. But the ones that people paid to watch were the same old franchises and sequels.

Here are the best rates films:

Here's what people chose to watch:

Notice that "...2" (etc. ) features more often in one list than the other.

Studios aren't telling people what to watch, people are telling studios what they want to watch, and unfortunately, it's all the same stuff, again.

Obviously, I'll be going to the next Ghostbusters (I am sorry) but I will definitely be shunning the Practically-guaranteed-to-be-shit Matrix, Gremlins and of course Goonies sequels.

That best rated list is part of the problem too.
90% rubbish IMO.
And even that is probably being generous.
