What will next gen graphics look like?

Next console generation will be quite unique in a way. It will be the first generation where there is no way to tell where things are heading. Previous generations there where always the arcades, or high end pc to look at. When xbox 360 was launched we could look at the latest pc games to see what next gen console graphics will offer.

This is not the case with current pc games(and the arcades are dead), which for the most part are not made with the pc in mind. Often quite sloppy console port. Current high end pcs are often left twiddling their thumbs at current games.

So i started this thread as a speculation thread what next gen might offer.

The first example i can think of is unreal engine demo Samaritan.

1080p output, high resolution assets to match 1080p, 60fps standard...

There's already BF3, Witcher 2 and Metro 2033 on PC that does these.

maybe 4k resolution in the middle of the generation?

1080p 60fps standard? Not happening.

4K definitely not happening...What?

1080p/60fps is pretty dubious, this is just hilarious, haha.

Put down the crack pipe son.

You serious? The gap between console and PC currently, couple with the cost and power consumption of high end PC's, suggests it's going to fall somewhere short of Battlefield 3 maxed out.

I hope we will see more lifelike animation like Euphoria (Motion Capture + Physics Based Animation + AI). I mean Backbreaker's animation looked incredible even though the game had it's issues (which a lot were rectified by the Greathouse patch).

Bf3 maxed out doesn't look that much better than the console version (I've played both) So...

It looks way better, but I wouldn't call it even a generation gap, I'd call it a better looking version of the same game. I could post plenty of comparison screens proving this too.

I think you are setting the bar too low. The gap between PC and consoles games currently is smaller than it could have been because there are almost no games that are developed for PC first to get the most out of it and look the best there, not caring about old consoles. A console exclusive like God of War 3 or Uncharted games but of the new generation on a closed hardware where they give their everything to make it look amazing on powerful consoles might look better than that.

Hardware wise, the gap has never been bigger, probably. High end pc are more than a generation beyond current consoles.

Software wise. Not so much. Very few pc games are made with high end pc in mind. Infact most of them are made with the lowest common denominator in mind, namely 360.

By any chance are you partially blind?

I've got the PC and 360 versions. I play PC on high at 1080p. The difference is ridiculous. I can barely play it on 360 after that.

People are really underestimating next gen consoles. Remember how PC games looked in 2004-2005 and how the console games look now.

Note: I'm not saying it's going to be the exact same situation again but saying stuff that they will barely look like BF3 maxed is pretty crazy at this point.

At the start it'll look like current gen PC games but by the end, it should look well above what we have now, with PC even further. But that's assuming a traditional generational leap.

My dream is for it to look like FFX CG scenes.

But I doubt it because of cost reasons.

I have both versions also. The difference is strong but not a generation gap. I use ultra settings on PC>high.

Main difference is the resolution, shadows.

I also happen to have two 27" monitors (well, my PC monitor and my 2nd TV are both 27) and been meaning to put them side by side and directly compare just for my own shits and giggles, haven't done that yet though. Going to do the same With Crysis 2, should be fun.

If next gen just gives me BF3 on PC ultra in 1080P, I'll cry, because it's not that impressive. I fond Crysis 2 PC more impressive than BF3.

Err ?

Wasnt impressed by them tbh

The fact that those games maxed out on PC are so technically improved over what is possible on consoles, and some people are not really impressed or don't see that much of a difference...There's really going to be a lot of disappointment next gen :lol.
