Independence Day is returning to theaters on July 3, 2013 with a full 3D post-conversion, 20th Century Fox revealed today.

The original film, released in 1996, starred Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Randy Quaid and was directed by Roland Emmerich with a screenplay by Emmerich and Dean Devlin. A loose re-telling of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds", the sci-fi actioner grossed over $800 million worldwide.

I like this movie but whats the point of a re-release? Oh shitty 3D? Riiight...

Thats a bad trend the movies are taking.
 
Will definitely watch. The scenes with the ships destroying LA and Ny are bad ass.

Lol at paying to see this is in 3D, the CGI has aged terribly. If there was ever a movie that needed to be Lucas-ified, this was it.

I never made this connection. I just thought it was a bog standard alien/Erf invasion flick, but I can see where the comparisons come from.
 
CG has aged poorly but damn if this isn't the best fucking movie. I still have my little white house hologram thing from the front of the VHS case.

It's earf, shut your mouth.
 
Can't wait to see Bill Pulman's rousing eve of battle speech in three glorious dimensions, it'll feel like I'm actually there, dude.
 
More drunk Goldblum is always welcome.

But damn Hollywood instead of remaking films (ugh) they're just releasing them again. Fuck you Jim Cameron

Again, it just seemed to me like a normal alien invasion concept. The fact that there were motherships, a bigger mothership, shields, recovered alien technology at Area 51, set in modern-day America and the "virus" was uploaded from a laptop blinded me from the basic: Aliens + Virus = War of the Worlds.

Silly me.
 
Man one of the fav movies when I was young and one of the last huge budget films with the majority of minitures/small sets. I always dreamed of a sequel.
 
They need to air it with the original Randy Quaid/bi-plane ending.
 
I do love both sides of the "earf" argument. If anything I have more of an issue with the aliens running an operating system that Jeff Goldblum can hack into.

Since "Earf" is apparently just slang for Earth, and that is the only reason people are "parroting" it, I would think bringing it up as racist is sort of the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot.

this is truly one of those movies that aged poorly. maybe it was because I was a kid when it came out, but goddamn the dialogue and acting are atrocious.

The laserdisc special edition includes an alternate ending to the final aerial battle sequence. In it Russell Casse was rejected as a pilot for one of the jets to attack the alien ship approaching Area 51. However, he arrives at the end of battle flying his crop duster (which he has been towing behind his motor home) with a missile strapped to it. He then flies the crop duster into the energy beam weapon of the alien ship to bring it down.

Sounds awesome.

Uhhh...this is the only ending I've ever seen and I don't have the laserdisc.

Is such a thing even possible?
 
this movie had one of the best trailers ever. i was sooo excited to see this and left the theater extremely disappointed.
