Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Announced for Wii Shop Channel

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii(TM) video
game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a
high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games.
Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets.
This week's new games are:

Gradius(R) (NES(R), 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Across the galaxy, there
exists a distant planet known as Gradius. Gradius' peaceful existence has
been brought to an end by an intense space invasion by a race known as the
Bacterion. To save the planet, the hyperspace fighter Vic Viper has been
deployed to fight the Bacterion invasion. Players pilot the Vic Viper through
seven stages, shooting and dodging through deadly obstacles, while using
various power-ups, including missiles, lasers, options and shields. The Vic
Viper's target is the enemy fortress, Xaerous. The only way to end the war is
to plunge deep through the enemy forces and destroy its very core.

Soldier Blade(R) (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): A new shooter
in the "Star Soldier" tradition. Players play as an SIA (Special Interception
Airforce) pilot flying the heavy assault fighter "Soldier Blade." Players
face the Zeograd invasion force with weapon attacks that change each time they
grab a power-up item. Players can unleash three different kinds of attack
depending on the color of the power-up item. New features, such as the
"Gunbody" option for avoiding enemy attacks and the "Burst Out" system (which
has a different effect depending on the power-up level), add a strategic
element that requires players to make snap decisions about which items to grab
and when to use special attacks. Awesome boss battles await players at the
end of each operation. Playing in "CHALLENGE" mode requires players to try to
get as many points as they can in a limited amount of time.

Dungeon Explorer(TM) (TurboGrafx16, 1-5 players, 600 Wii Points): Dungeon
Explorer is a multiplayer action/role-playing game where up to five players
can play at the same time. The story takes place in underground dungeons.
Players can choose from eight different character types: Fighter, Thief,
Warlock, Witch, Bishop, Elf, Bard or Knome. Depending on the character, the
types of magic, attack strength and movement will all vary. To survive,
players must know all about their enemies' weaknesses. Players also must know
about the special attributes of each magic spell and use them to their
greatest advantage. In team-play games, working together is the key to
victory. Any combination of Wii Remotes and Nintendo GameCube(TM) controllers
can be used in multiplayer games.

This is as good a place as any - Dungeon Explorer - any good? It's basically like a TG16 Zelda, right? I thought I remembered reading that somewhere...

Already posted in the Virtual Console Discussion thread, but as usual, also deserves its own topic for those that don't keep up with that monstrosity.

More like a TG16 Gauntlet, and it is good. For a Zelda-alike, wait for Neutopia.

Dungeon Explorer is great, except it's NOT UP :\

It was delayed last week and was supposed to come out again today, but it's still not up, while the other two are.

Edit: OK, it's up now, but not in the "New releases" menu .. that can't be good for its sales.

So how exactly do you play dungeon explorer with 5 players if the Wii only supports a max of 4?

Well 4 for wireless.. dunno if you can utilize more in conjunction with GC controllers

I just downloaded Soldier Blade but I didnt see dungeon explorer... wtf?? Gradius was there.

But WOW! Soldier blade is WAAY better then super star soldier IMO... I got to the second level on my first try, and I cant even get past the second on super star. I like how it lets you keep going when you die as opposed to sometimes having to go back to the begining in super star.

Gamecube controller slot 1 = Turbographx controller slot 5, IIRC.

sounds like its a combination of wii controllers + GC controllers. 8 player max theoretical?

I love Gradius, but I'm holding off for Final Fantasy VI.

Joke post? With the upcoming GBA remake of FFVI, a VC release is highly unlikely.

Hopefully they translate Final Soldier, it's also good. You'll like Blazing Lasers, too.

I wonder how much space Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder would take up with the audio crushed down.

For whatever reason, Dungeon Explorer isn't showing up in the "New" section. But if you browse the complete list, or browse by system, you should be able to find it without issues.

Remember when everybody wanted the FF games on GBA back when it was announced in 2000? Yeah, we'll likely see them on the Virtual Console in 2011 at this rate.

soldier blade is the shit, though i don't personally like it as much as sss. i used to love the "high-res" display mode in which it squeezed the picture into a 9:16 box.

Soldier Blade rocks, hard. It's probably the most impressive HuCard shooter on the system. I would rather have seen the TG-16 port of Gradius instead of NES, and hell, since Konami owns Hudson, it should be doable.

NoA is now getting some volume in their shop, and it has some nice variety. I want to see more N64 games though (Starfox and Blast Corps).

Crappy week.

After blowing through almost 5000 Wii points I think I'm just going to stop until the really, really big games come out. I'm realizing that achievements are a greater motivation than I thought and without them, I'm just not having as much fun with these old games (at these price points). They would be much better at a reduced price or at a flat fee with access to all games.

They should be releasing the really big name games during periods such as now when no big releases are hitting the system.

This is crazy talk. GBA has been on the way out for a while now. The GBA version of FFVI makes a VC release highly unlikely this year and this year alone. It will be released on the VC at some point, just probably not until next year (or later).

GBA was right behind PS2 in units sold last month, plus you can play all GBA games on a DS, so I'm not sure why you think GBA is "on the way out".

It's a budget level handheld system now and it's prospering at that price.

Im more or less torn between Dungeon Explorer and Soldier Blade. Anyone have any advice on which one to get? I think right now I am leaning more towards Soldier blade right now though.
