Dude, it's his back. He needs to let that puppy heal. It's honestly better if you just let him chill as long as possible.

No one is saying it doesn't need to heal. There was an article posted, as well as a few interviews that talked about it at length.
What I'm saying is wrong is the ASG comment. If he's ready at the start of the season, fine, but I expect late November.
They've been incredibly cautious as is and I'm sure if something was wrong Dwight wouldn't be lifting weights and working out at UCLA. They're not going to rush him back since it's Dwight freaking Howard and from what I've read it's entirely possible he'll be ready by the start of the season with no lingering back problems in the future.
Personally, i'd rather he sat out till the ASG if necessary.
I saw a recent interview with Rose who said he was basically ahead of schedule by 3 weeks, but that he's not progressing through to the next level of rehab until the doctors timeline said so, not rose's timeline.
That sounds like an approach more NBA players should adopt. So many guys come back from injury, but sustain another so quickly because they go off of what THEY feel.
Dwight literally said in his press conference that he'll start working out and such when the doctor clears him. And it sounds like he has been cleared since he is starting to work out again. He's following the doctor's timetable and so are the Lakers. If something could seriously go wrong they wouldn't dare risk it.
Couldn't find the exact quote about waiting for his doc to clear him but theres this.
So then why is he coming back months before the original schedule?
From what i remember Dwight wasn't meant to be back till January at the earliest. Not after the surgery he had. And not lifting weights/running until October.

All info on his surgery suggest that his back was much less severe than the average herniated disc. Timetable isn't that shocking if that's the case.
Well his surgery wasn't as nearly as bad as everyone thought it was. From what I've read it wasn't very invasive and he could have been up and running months ago. Only reason he's been held out this long is to ensure there are no long term setbacks. That January timeline could be from the thought that they found more damage than they initially found. The Lakers doctors have said he'll be fine and Mitch has said he's hopeful Dwight will be ready for training camp and the season.

Quite regularly. Particularly in Bigs.
I tend to err on the side of skepticism when these guys come back far a head of schedule. That's why i question it.
Maybe he'll be fine. Maybe he'll end up trying to do too much with his knee's to try and spare his back cause he came back early.
Considering the injury plagued years we've seen from bigs, i actually hope it's the former.

Ray Allen was awesome, so was Shawn Kemp of course. But Kevin Durant is easily going to be the best player in their franchise when it's all said and done. Guy came into the NBA basically as their main gun and he doesn't seem to have any off-the-court shit to worry about.
