As the spookiest season of the year creeps in, it's time to raise from the dead our annual 31 Days of Horror Movie Marathon!
We post this thread in anticipation of October so participants can begin drafting lists, discussing years past, and drawing up the hype - remember it's best to not begin your movie viewing until October 1st.

What is 31 Days of Horror?

It's a daily horror movie marathon that culminates in Halloween!
Participants watch, discuss, and review as many horror, thriller, classic, goreporn, zombie, psychobiddy, monster, slasher, anthology, found footage, etc. or Halloween-esque movies as they can get through during October. The goal is to watch a movie/day finishing up on October 31st. It can be difficult for everyone to find the time for 31 films, but don't let that dissuade, people participate if they watch zero to 62. Just have fun and chat about your passion for on-screen horror!

Rules:

- Starting October 1st, watch as many full-length horror movies as you can until November 1st. Only discuss movies watched during this period.
- After each viewing, you must post which movie(s) you've watched and your thoughts/opinions on them. Be as brief or as detailed in your review as you'd like, but don't just list what you've watched - none wants to read a list. Please number your movies and keep a running tally of your progress. If you are cross posting your reviews elsewhere, do not only provide a link to the offsite review, post the full review here as well.
- Short films may be included, but should be 45 minutes in length or longer.
- TV series (The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Stranger Things, etc) are okay to watch, but the catch is that you may only review and count an entire season towards your list.
- TV series consisting of stand alone short films (such as Masters of Horror) are allowed as long as they meet the 45 minutes or longer time requirement for short films.
- SPOILER TAG. SPOILER TAG. SPOILER TAG. Remember, many eyes read through this thread for suggestions, so try not to ruin anything for others, regardless of how long ago the film came out.
- Don't cheat. Jason will know.

Optional Extras:

- Do 1 movie every day, so you end up with a 31 films as your final total. As before, the full 31 films total is fully optional. Only attempt this if you have a lot of free time and/or are completely insane and self-abusive.
- As the purpose of this is to expose yourself to new horror films, attempt to watch as many movies you haven't seen as possible. This makes going for the full 31 movies a lot more interesting than slogging though the same movies every year.
- Adding poster images, screenshots, quotes, trailer links, etc to your opinion posts are not mandatory, but will help bring attention to your reviews of each film - especially useful if you feel it's a film worth recommending to other participants

Oh finally, thanks to create the best thread of the year, I almost picked the torch this year, but maybe I'll create the thread next year hahaha

I'll post my list later, but again, this thread is very important to me, it's the only way I found to participate in a Halloween, to feel the mood and to share some good horror movies.

This is my list for 2022

Maybe I'll do some changes due to stream / theater / availability

I like to put some different kind of genres and this year are:

80s and 90s trashs / b-movies
Jason series
Some Asian movies
some modern horror
comedies / halloween themed

Highway to Hell is so awesome, I might revisit that.
Not sure what I have planned, but I've heard good things about You Won't be Alone.
As for recent recommendations, saw Orphan First Kill and while it isn't what I see as a true horror film it has some good surprises
Was also told about a movie called Lady Terminator:

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
Horror is my favorite genre, but I've never participated in one of these threads. I just watched Paranormal Activity Next of Kin. It's not like the original it's just a found footage horror film and not a very good one at that. I give it a 6 out of 10

1. Halloween (1978) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A psychotic young boy in a clown suit grows up to become a psychotic man in overalls.
A giant franchise in the horror genre and must see for anyone interested in the slasher genre.

2. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A B movie classic that is too stupid and fun not to be enjoyed.
attack of the killer tomatoes coolidge after midnite GIF by Coolidge Corner Theatre

3. Alien - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A classic in every sense. Truly great Sci fi horror and I don't think I can say anything about it that hasn't already been said

4. Friday the 13th (1980) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Our first trip out the troubled spot known as Camp Crystal Lake. Though different than what the franchise will become known for, it stands up as a good slasher and a great way to start a franchise.

5. Friday the 13th Part 2 - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

After a brief pit stop in town to recap the 1st movie we return to Crystal Lake and the big man is here (looking like the Elephant Man.)

The old camp is off limits, but teenagers don't listen and shenanigans ensue.
6. Halloween II - ⭐⭐⭐

Picks up right where the first one ended, unfortunately it is a terrible follow up to the first movie and just drags on. Having Michael kill you so you can get out of there might be a blessing.
7. Friday the 13th Part 3 - ⭐⭐⭐️D

This one has always been wierd to me. It was originally released in 3D in theaters, so you end up with all these shots of people pointing stuff at the camera and it looks much softer than other movies from the time.

The acting is also extra terrible in a college film kind of way. On the positive side we get to see Jason without a mask (or headcovering) and we finally establish the Jason everyone has come to know.
8. The Thing (1982) -⭐⭐⭐⭐

John Carpenters take on Invasion of the Body Snatchers but with the paranoia and Isolation upped to 1000. Still an amazing movie that stands the test of time and the practical effects are still top notch even after all these years.
9. Halloween III: Season of the Witch -
☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️

This one is wierd. There's no Micheal and Halloween is a movie in the universe. I actually don't remember this as a kid, and it did manage to jump scare me once.

Really feels like they had no faith in the movie so they slapped the Halloween name onto it.
season of the witch horror GIF by absurdnoise
10. The Twilight Zone: The Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

My first anthology of the year, and also one of my favorite anthologies. The 3rd act was always my favorite, but I appreciate them all.
11. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Cory Feldman and Crispen Glover, along with some randos take a trip up to Crystal Lake in what is sure to be the final installment of this ongoing saga. I'm mean it's right there in the title.
12 The Toxic Avenger - ♾️⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐♾️

I can't give this enough stars. It is an absolute favorite and embodies everything I love about both horror and Troma studios.

It's low budget, it's cheesy, it's gratititious, it's over the top and excessively violent, but goddammit do I have a giant grin on my face the entire time it's on. The practical effects are very good considering the budget and everyone needs to watch it at least once.

Probably the best movie I will watch this year.
Toxic Avenger Dancing GIF by Shudder
13. Friday the 13th V: A New Beginning. -
⭐️️

Having survived his encounter with Jason, Tommy is sent to a psych ward, time skip a few years and he's transferred to a halfway house.

One of the weaker entries in the series, most kills happen offscreen and takes s very long time to get going.
14. Ghoulies - ⭐⭐

This series was a favorite of mine as a kid (probably mostly due to the creature design.) but sadly it doesn't hold up at all.

The best part of it now is a teenage Mariska Hargitay.
horror movies GIF by absurdnoise
15. Aliens - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
After 57 years in hypersleep the corporation finds Ripley and sends her back to whence she came.

Things don't go smoothly.
16. The Fly (1986) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A man tries to invent teleportation to change the world, and he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that damn meddling insect.

I forgot how grotesque the body horror is in this movie. Sone parts still make me squeamish to this day.
17. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives -
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tommy returns to Crystal Lake (sorry Forest Green) to destroy Jason's body and get rid of him once and for all. After a series of unfortunate events a resurrected and now supernatural Jason gets up to his old tricks.
18. Ghoulies II - ⭐⭐⭐

The ghouls are on the move, this time they find thoer way to a failing teavelling carnival.

Sadly, while better than the first it's still not great. Good soft horror for someone who wants to introduce older kids to horror movies I guess.
19. The Lost Boys - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A family moves to a new town after mom gets divorced and the older brother falls in with the wrong crowd (who happen to be vampires.)
20. Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood -
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My favorite of the Friday movies. I love the supernatural vs supernatural aspect (same as Dream Warriors is my favorite Nightmare) It also has my favorite kill of the series in it.
21. Halloween IV: The Return of Michael Meyers - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

10 years after the first Halloween Michael returns to finish what he started. While it never reaches the highs of the 1st it's better than 2.
22. Killer Kliowns from Outer Space - ⭐⭐⭐

I don't know what I can add to this the title pretty much says it all. Pure 80s cheese. The clown designs are a great mix of funny/creepy and has some creative kills.

I still can't believe they are making a game out of this

Things are still kind of messy over here but I'll attempt to participate.

I watched X which was very good but more straight forward than I expected.

I also watched The Wretched which was a very solid little horror flick about a child eating female creature from the woods. Pretty solid gore and paced pretty well too.

I watched Creepshow yesterday. Quite possibly my favorite horror film ever. Certainly my most rewatched. The Crate is probably my favorite part. "OH Henry! What would you do without me?"

I'm going to put something on tonight too but I'm not sure what yet.

Personally my favourite Halloween sequel and I think Jamie Lee Curtis' most impressive performance. Very well paced movie, fun opening too. Always get a kick out of Joseph Gordon Levitt being in it.
I hope we get far enough in our watchthrough to get to this. I haven't watched any Halloween movies outside the original 5 or 6.

I'm doing a year by year release watch this year with my son dictating which movies we watch from that year (unless I veto it because I know it's terrible.) or we have watched it together already.

Always enjoy Shocktober. Me and my Mrs. got together on Halloween so we always do a lot of horror movies in the run-up to our anniversary which is usually dinner and a classic.

We never do 31, just too busy, but try and get a dozen in. Last year was The Thing, The Wailing, Host, Psycho Goreman, Creepshow, Censor, Scream, The Blob, Dawn of the Dead and a few more I'm forgetting.

Already have a few piled up for this year. She's never seen Rosemary's Baby so that's definitely on there.

Alright I'm in like always! Only got to 29 movies last year, I usually try to hit 30 since Halloween evening is traditionally boardgame night at my house.

#1 The Little Stanger (2018)

Great actors but a very slow and dragged out story, and when the plot finally happens about 100 minutes in, it doesn't manage to save the movie. Hardly a horror movie, rather a psychological thriller set in a gloomy old manor that's has seen better days, giving the movie a bit of a gothic horror vibe I guess?

little-stranger-gyp.png

#2 Umma (2022)

A Korean lady (great role by Sandra Oh) fears she's turning into her mother, but of course this happens kinda literally, not shying away of some very tired horror tropes in the process. There are some things to like, but overall this fell very flat.

umma-blogroll-1647542021984.jpg

#3 The Man They Could Not Hang (1939)

Pretty cool little low budget Boris Karloff movie where he is of course a mad scientist. A bit short which made it feel a little incomplete, but great fun.

I've always found Halloween Resurrection with Busta Rhymes in it to be some funny shit. His speech at the end of the movie had me laughing at how bad of an actor he was :messenger_tears_of_joy:!

Haven't made a full list of what I want to watch, but I'm catching up on the Halloween films to see Halloween Ends at a local Drive-In theater (also showing the original The Thing after).

I've never actually seen any of the Halloween films all the way through, just clips and some scenes online. Watched Halloween (1978) and Halloween (2018) so far:

Halloween (1978) = I'm sure this was really something when it was release, but honestly his movie is hilarious. I lost it when Michael appeared into the doorway wearing the bedsheet and glasses.
Halloween (2018) = Nothing special here. A by the numbers slasher film with very questionable locations for Michael to even be at.

Also on my list so far:
Relic
The Dark and the Wicked
Hereditary
Galaxy of Terror
The Invisible Man
The Lighthouse
Color Out of Space

My son laughed at this too, he was like "That's a great disguise"

Watched Creepshow 2 yesterday.

"Thanks for the ride lady!"

Watched Fear Pharm today, lol.
Creepshow 2 just about scarred me for life, saw it at the drive-in theater with my parents when I was nine. I was supposed to be asleep. The middle story, The Raft, freaked me out something terrible when the guy got sucked through the boards.

"Thanks for the ride lady" still gets said to this day in my family.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Me too! Horror anthologies is probably my favourite genre. For Halloween these two are a must:
If you haven't seen it, I recommend the Mortuary Collection (I think it came out in 2020?). It's silly as all getout but a decent enough anthology of modern weird horror stuff. Clancy Brown was pretty awesome in it, and it was filmed in my hometown.

I personally love this movie, but you're right that it's definitely the black sheep of the franchise.
