31 Days of Horror: The Awakening |OT| The October Movie Marathon

Prime is generally really damn good for older stuff, there are some absolute 70's and 80's treats on there if you're a fan of the period, or are generally of the opinion that most recent mainstream "horror" is utter shite.

Speaking of modern and not shite, I highly recommend French series Marianne on Netflix. Watched in original language of course, dub is not good.

Also If you have Prime, spend the $5 for a Shudder add on.

H2 is more standard slasher fare but I still really enjoy this as a double bill. The first 3 films all have strong points for me. I can leave the rest.

you would suggest I watch H3? Ive always heard terrible things about it...

oddly, as much as I love 1 (and the IP in general) I hadn't seen H2 before, and still have to see H3-H6

didnt know thats a thing - an awesome thing....will check out. tx

The Exorcist[Amazon]

Been meaning to give this a proper rewatch for years and ended up doing it yesterday. It's really the direction and performances that elevate this and It really deserves all the praise it gets. I know people say it isn't shocking these days but man it still really goes places at times.

I probably wouldn't actually, lol. It's a very acquired taste. Best thing about it is probably the music and general old skool atmosphere - it's a brooding film and that's what I like. It's slow and flawed and gets a bit campy. But it does something for me as an oddball movie that doesn't at all fit with the rest of the series. It's more like watching a really really old Dr Who or Quatermass story.

Of the others I seem to remember liking H5 most.

Definitive ranking of Halloween movies.

1) Halloween (original)
2) Halloween (2018)
3) Halloween 4
4) Halloween 2
5) Halloween 3 Season of the Witch
6) Halloween 5
7) Halloween 6
8) Halloween Resurrection
9) Rob Zombies Halloween
10) H2O
11) Any movie ever made in the history of time
12) Rob Zombie's Halloween 2

Not counting the first one since it's an all time classic Season of the Witch is my favorite. It's just so different and I just love everything about.

Plus that song from it is so catchy.

The song is the only thing I remember about it. May have to rewatch soon.

12) Rob Zombie's Halloween 2

For me:

1) Halloween(original)
2) Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
3) Halloween - director's cut(Zombie)
4) Halloween III: Season of the Witch
5) Halloween II
6)Halloween H20: 20 Years Later
7)Halloween(2018)
8)Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers
9)Halloween: Resurrection
Absolute Shit)Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers/Halloween II(Zombie)

I'd say my top 3 are the only ones I really like in all honesty. 4-7 have some good elements but still have plenty of issues that keep me from really liking them. 8 and beyond are all trash.

3. Body Bags (Shudder)

It's an anthology movie with three seperate stories. One in which Mark Hammill goes batshit crazy. It was decent enough.

#2 30 Days of Night (2007) [on UK Prime]

I wanted to like this more. It's got a solid concept. North Alaskan town in winter attacked by vampires. Good cast, visually quite impressive, starts well and has a bit of good action - though often hampered by the trend of the time of super shaky close up camera. But overall it's a bit run-of-the-mill, disjointed, and goes on too long. The month long concept doesn't work because it all feels like a couple of days. Ending is whack.

I decided not to go with the 3rd installment of Phantasm and move on to something different and maybe less popular .

3. The Gravedancers - 3 friends attend a funeral of a 4th and decide to honor his life by breaking into the graveyard and dancing on the graves when reading a poem they believe to be a celebration of life . Of course it's not , they invoke some kind of curse and shenanigans ensue . It's not bad at all but felt like a bit of a slow burn . Some of the imagery is effective with the bulging eye look but there is one in particular that I almost snorted out my coffee as watching as it was completely ridiculous . If you like B horror with a little more production value than normal then hey give it a try .

For #4 last night I watched AHS:1984 ep3 and.......

The 1st episode of the new Creepshow series on Shudder. Holy pumpkin shit was it good. It's not optional for horror fans.

Tonight is ep2 of Creepshow I think, and my copy of Killer Sofa arrives today (watching that tonight for sure)

The Autopsy of Jane Doe[Netflix]

Put this one off for awhile because I thought it was something else but I finally decided to give it a go after seeing Scary Stories from the same director. Man, this is one extremely well put together horror film. It doesn't set out to do anything particularly crazy but what it does do is rock solid.

I was surprised by how good it was.

8. Rewatch. The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Another A24 classic. Film has such a eerie atmosphere throughout the whole thing and has one of my favorite performance from a young actor.

9. Rewatch. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. This is an amazing Korean found footage film. One of the first ones in a while to actually give me the chills in some of the scenes. Highly recommend.

Yeah, gonjiam was one of my favorites from last year. Best found footage movie in a long time for sure. It falls apart a bit with the ending but its brilliant until then.

binge-watched The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness last night on Hulu. Great flicks, always loved them. they are perfect for a chill-at-home-date-night-movie-marathon :p

i'm going to start a Halloween series marathon and watch every single one in release order (including 3 and the rob zombie remakes). it's going to be a good time. Not sure what my plans are for October 31, but if i'm not going to a haunted house or something with friends, I'm definitely going to spend the night watching some of the suggestions ITT.

Also, this is a pretty dumb fun movie.

Here is a recommendation. I found The Others to be very unsettling, and it's actually a well-received film.

#3 Hell House LLC (2015) [on UK prime]

I enjoy an average found footage movie more than I might admit. The naturalistic style can be very chilled when watching the mundanities while getting to know the characters between set pieces. They don't scare me as often as I'd like but it's usually fun. This one is standard stuff. A halloween haunted house attraction in an actually haunted house goes wrong. The usual mix of people acting a little odd and mannequins moving when you aren't looking until the big finale and a shock ending that some might guess. Even so I quite liked this one. It's alright.

3- Alyce (2011) - I've had this one shrinkwrapped for what seems like forever - skinny girl trips and pushes her friend down the roof, destructive behavior insues. - no spoopy, partial skeleton showed.

220px-Backcountry_Poster.jpg

4 - BackCountry (2014) - Bear is not so cuddly. Hiker thinks she can outrun him. How cute. - Not scary since I can't relate to voluntarily going in the woods.

5 - Don't Look Now (1973) - Just started - father loose daughter, move to venice, start seeing a girl silhouette wearing the same red coat his daughter was wearing when she drowned... - good atmosphere, more of a thriller than anything horror. would still recommend.

If you want batshit crazy then watch Hellraiser:Judgment(2018) just for the luls that the ending provides.

The movie is pretty awful and not really scary at all, it's like the director had some weird bodily fluid fetish.

BUT THIS ENDING.
an angel wants a human released from Pinhead even though the guy is super evil but it's for some god's plan bullshit. Pinhead explains that this is the order of things and it shouldn't be disrupted. Pinhead releases the dude back into the real world only to get his head blasted off, Pinhead laughs and the angel gets super pissed and threatens him. Pinhead kills her in retaliation, THEN GOD TURNS PINHEAD INTO A NORMAL HUMAN FOR PUNISHMENT.

2.Critters 2
3.Critters 3
4.Critters 4

They all sit around the 3 star level for me.

Critters Attack is like a 2* they ruined a lot of the other movies.

watched Sleepaway Camp with my gf.

6. Sleepaway Camp
7. Sleepaway Camp2
8. Sleepaway Camp 3

I think I’m going to go Prom Night with my gf, but what other soft horror can I find with my son? (Tremors?)

Haha. That ending sounds crazy as shit, man.

Also, I agree that the first Scream was the best in the franchise. Scream 4 was good, but I think someone is overhyping it because *gasp* Emma Roberts is in it.

#4 Hospital Massacre (1982) aka X-Ray

Wow. This is the most bizarre and ridiculous hospital I've seen. So much doesn't make sense, whether it's the horrible bedside manner, nonsensical treatment, creepy patients, perverts, drunks, people just staring at you for no reason, things happening so so slowly in close up. The plot is your basic knife wielding maniac with a vendetta against the lead woman. I laughed pretty hard. Great viewing for bad movie slasher enthusiasts.

6. The First Purge

Watched about 3/4 of it, then purged this film off my dvr before it ended. jfc. whatd they do to this franchise.

smack you in the face racial social commentary.

High Tension Unrated[Amazon Prime]

Watched the original French version ages ago so this was my first time seeing the English one. All these years later it still holds up really well. The violence is obviously a big part of the appeal but it's still a really well constructed and tense film otherwise. Sure, the ending is kind of naff since they decided to alter the original premise which made more sense but it still doesn't ruin the film for me like it seemed to for so many others.

Ep 2 of Creepshow on Shudder was great. 2 eps, 4 stories in and dare I say it may be better than the Creepshow movies. ( with the exception of this from Creepshow 2)

Also watched Killer Sofa. If you're going to watch one Jewish themed horror movie about a murderous piece of furniture, make sure it's Killer Sofa...

Watching the first three Purge movies I tried to see what this was about and watched a clip where dudes are in KKK outfits riding around in a deuce and a half............

The series was always about the caste system and your rank in the social economic structure but it's always kind of tip toed it's feet in both waters. In one scene in Election Year it shows that anyone can be brutal with money and power but in another scene it flip flops.

It's just dipping it's feet in one pool more than the other now.

agree about the 1% vs. everyone else...

but this one was way more racially charged. also, a lot more fabrication, metaphors, and in your face trump bs... like theres no way of escaping trump in all media during his era...

6. Hereditary (2018)
DAT DECAPITATION SCENE THO. Thoroughly enjoyed it. gets a bit on the spooky side. on the right track with this one.

Just realized I have a copy of Shape Of Water. Is that horror? Haven’t watched it yet.
no no n ono non onono n ooooooo sir.

its like...a drama/love story.

i mean... fine i guess you can lump it into a monster movie, since it stars a fishman, but i dont recall much of a thriller aspect to it.

A group of paranormal investigators visit an evil haunted house, a dirty groundskeeper goes on a rampage, and Linnea Quigley takes a shower. Clunky, goofy, kinda fun.

#6 Creepshow 2 (1987) - on UK prime

Wasn't planning on watching this but saw it while flicking through Prime and thought 'why not'. Must have seen the trailer a hundred times but first time watching it. The stories are very simple but done well and mostly good fun. I liked the Hitchhiker best.

10. First watch. Child's Play (2019) This wasn't horrible as compared to some of the other classic horror remakes like Pet Sematary and Poltergeist. The saving grace of this film was Aubrey Plaza who looked so fine as the kid's mother.

Tonight were watching The Exorcist so I'm pumped to rewatch that since It's one of my all time favorites.

The scene at the end with Aubrey Plaza and the forklift had me as uncomfortable as a horror movie could possibly make me. I really enjoyed this reboot.

Since I didn't post yesterday I'll do a 2 in 1 .

4.Dybbuk Box-The Story of Chris Chambers- Saw this in my Recommended section on Amazon and gave it a shot . Ummm...not really much to say about it . Guy buys a Dybbuk box off of the dark web and opens it for some youtube challenge and things go south as ,of course , just about everything he does makes matters worse . Nothing really to say about it. It's in the format of found footage and there are no special effects to speak of . I find movies like this take a high amount of empathy to get into . If you can't put yourself in the situation you'll just be bored to tears . I've seen worse...but not much worse .

grhOq3b.jpg

fwSsLxel.jpg

5.They Wait -So, after watching Dybbuk Box this one popped up to watch next and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised by this one .When I saw the name I instantly thought It Follows (even though it is 7 years older) but it is nothing like that . It revolves around a young boy and the Chinese tradition of Ghost Month . Some creepy things going on and some jump scares and it kept me interested till the end .
