It's possible to finish the story if he keeps things moving. After listening to the rest of the books on audible during work, the majority of the books are just interactions for the sake of it. Like how nothing ever happens in Twinpeaks, then you learn that the whole point of any actual events were just to get the characters interacting. The actual bits where events transpire in these books is near the books' ending chapters and a tiny bit in events in between books.

When they were saying 'winter is coming' in the first book, I had believed it would have arrived by the next book or two.

I had been wondering why Fire and Ice Volume 1, it it's already "largely written", is still so far out (late 2018-early 2019), but Linda and Elio made a video on it and put it a bit more into perspective.

Basically, large (likely) coffee table style books are very logistically complicated - you have to commission artwork/illustrations and figure out page layouts and whatnot, which takes a lot of time. It took the publisher months and months to get The World of Ice and Fire out, even though the book's manuscript was pretty much complete and had been for some time.

They also speculate that the publisher wants to save the book for release during the holiday 2018 period to take advantage of the fact that these sorts of books sell well during the holidays.

So yeah, the book's ETA isn't as strange as I had initially thought.

(they also doubt that Fire and Blood Volume 1's development will impact TWOW very much, considering that it's already mostly written and GRRM usually has an easier time writing fake history than he does with the main series)

The fact that it is mostly written just means it already impacted TWOW, not that it does not impact TWOW.

They mention in the video that they've already seen most of the material that's going to comprise Fire and Blood V.1 because it was material that he wrote, but was cut, from The World of Ice and Fire.

So basically, the material for the F&B V.1 impacted TWOW 3-4 years ago, but won't necessarily continue to impact it going forward since it's mostly done.
