Alien: Isolation sequel is in early development Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat

Is what I read after waking up from my nap and opening this thread and I was like "hmm, good question."

brilliant...

NOW Let them put Ripley or Hicks as the protagonist!!!!!

Not a generic woke character.

And put Isolation or this sequel in PS VR 2

Great news.

Wishlist:

1) keep the save system. The panic of trying to reach each one was fantastic

2) Severly limit guns. Keep it about tension and stealth.

3) resist the urge to use lots of callbacks and memberberries. That was the absolute worst in Romulus. It's lazy and unnecessary.

4) keep it tight. The original was too long. The last 10 hours felt tacked on.
A solid 10-12hr campaign would be perfect.

I really hope they can make this work. I don't think AI did badly on release, but it didn't do as great either. A common complaint is how it goes on just a bit too long. Maybe if they keep it shorter and keep a tight budget, it can do well. It really deserved it last time.

I think it had a few things working against it.

Pacing was an issue and it's a really long game for what it is. 18+ hours average on How Long to Beat is a big ask for a horror game. It's like triple the length of Outlast released earlier that year. Pacing issues don't stop people buying a game though, that's a problem they find out later.

I think the main issue was scheduling. It was released in the first year of the then next-gen PS4 and Xbox One, which not many people owned yet. Sure there was a last-gen PS360 port but no one really wants the gimped version. Everyone was playing Destiny when it dropped and the GTAV PS4 version was right around the corner. Talk about releasing between a rock and a hard place. They also released in the same month as another big horror game, The Evil Within, which probably split the sales figures.

The other issue was damage to the brand. Sega themselves had released Alien: Colonial Marines just a year before which was fucking trash. I can't really blame people for being understandably skeptical of another Alien game published by them. The brand had also taken a cinematic hit a couple of years prior from Prometheus being a stinker.

Another reality is that the game just didn't review well from some outlets. This was back when people trusted legacy media more so does count for something. IGN's review is the one people home in on but Polygon and Gamespot weren't keen either. Of course now people know better that these sites are a joke, and some have quietly tried to rehabilitate their opinion of the game (see the recent IGN article).

I hope to god they don't listen to everyone who complained about length. I loved it all the way through, every playthrough. Keep it 20 hours and expand on what you have.

I'll never understand the bitching over the game's length, first half is one of the scariest survival horror games in existence with shit your pants® moments every 2-3 minutes due the amazeballs sound production and atmosphere while in the 2nd half you get to have your "revenge" so to speak in that you can actually blast fools left and right instead of hiding with your shat pants in vents playing hide and seek - it feels empowering but most importantly, earned.
Not once I felt that that the game was padded or, that it overstayed its welcome, on the contrary, it had a satisfying length with a clear beginning, middle and end.

One of the most "next gen" experiences I had during the PS4XONE era , playing it with the lights turned off wearing headphones was truly marvelous (or should I say "terrifying"), in fact, it was THE game that made me a headphones believer®, the sound production was just THAT good.

Regarding the potential sequel now, this is some of the best news I've heard in the last 5 years or so, please please please let it be good !

PS : If you enjoyed Alien isolation, give Observation a go - it has the same art/UI director as Alien isolation IIRC and the atmosphere is as claustrophobic - if not MORE claustrophobic than Alien Isolation, another (absolutely) brilliant atmospheric sci-fi game 😉

Observation has been on my list forever! I'll definitely check it out.

And yeah, it always felt like we got Alien and Aliens in the same game with how we had a clear climax halfway through, reset, and then things got even worse for the second half. They went balls out, and it was a rollercoaster of terror from beginning to end for me. Give me more of that.

Holy shit. Finally! I am so stoked. Didn't expect the sheer amount of media to come out of the tenth anniversary.

How long has Sega been getting ready for this? Sneaky. Preordered the cassette from iam8bit.

The AI collection edition is on sale 85 % off until tomorrow on Xbox. I went to install the game after reading this, but must have played it from a disc last time, on the one x.

FPS boost on Series X.

Very cool. I'm currently ~50% into my first playthrough on Series X. They nailed the Alien tone, music, and atmosphere. Looking forward to what they do with the sequel.

For veterans of Isolation, how are the DLCs? I'm tempted to play them, but it's October and I also want to play other horror games this month, so I'm not sure about jumping into the DLCs right away after finishing the main story.
