Almost 19,000 games were released on Steam in 2024. Up from 14k in the previous year

90% are shit.
Just like with every other medium in existence.

Lots of games released is a good thing.

The problem I rather see is how we are supposed to filter through them. Steam has a pretty good set of options for finding games already, but it's not enough. They need to innovate in this area, it's getting harder and harder to find what you're looking for.

Hidden gems you probably never heard of:
The sad thing is that there are more findable curation communities and services like what you’ve just linked, but the jaded ones here won’t care. They see the monumental number, only focus on the bad, and then say that ‘nothing came out this year’. It’s like a loop.

All I know is that we are going to see some massive hoop jumping and excuses next year from those same people.

Too much shovel ware, I'd rarther have 10 really good games a year than loads of bad ones with a few exception's here and there, and no one can go through them all plus hardly any stand out anyway, Steam was better before it opened it's doors to everything from around 2016/17 onwards for me.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Expect to see even more as Sony and the rest double down on releasing console games onto PC while PC market continues to grow

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
But the game industry is stagnating/crashing!!!!

A bunch of fuckwit grifters on youtube!

The health of the games industry depends on professional publishers/developers making a profit, not on the number of games released by amateurs. The vast majority of those 19,000 new Steam games is crappy shovelware that no one buys and no one plays.

If that is is indeed true that would still mean there's 190 to 1900 games worth playing. Who the hell has time or money for that lol.

Christ it could be 0.1% worth playing and that would still be more games than I've bought this year!
Yup! Going by Steam Replay I played 30 games this year, 19 new. So 19/19000=0,001. *100 for percentage right? So I literally played 0,1% of the new games released on Steam in 2024.

Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

Overall bad I'd say.

There's a finite market and there are too many games competing for it. That doesn't just mean many developers struggle to make enough money and recognition, it also means skilled developers that could have been helping make other games better are instead struggling to get their small games even noticed.

I for one no longer even bother looking through small indie games these days, or even curated lists. I either play something from an established developer, or occasionally something recommended on the likes of here that I come across by chance. Some days I just give up and do something else in my set aside gaming time.

But would those 10 really good games be considered as such by everyone else on the platform? Would everybody's tastes be catered to with just 10 games?

No it's not. If you know exactly what you're looking for, you can search by title. What I'm assuming you mean is it's getting harder to find what you might like. This is also true of other mediums.

So many moronic "99% shovelware" posts as usual. Granted, most are indie games and weak or mediocre. But you fuckers have no idea what that percentage is, and might easily be surprised. There are tons of actually good quality games you never heard of. Hell just watching the John Linneman GOTY list there were like 5 fantastic looking indie games I never heard of.

The algorithm buries the shovelware, those simply don't exist as far as your average user is concerned.

Steam's algorithm has gotten very good at floating good games over the rest, unlike the other stores which are manually curated and an absolute mess.

Get off your fainting couch. None of you will see all those 19k games. Steam's algorithm will sort them for you and the good stuff will rise to the top.
*I* do see them as I check upcoming and new games daily. IMO, there's an overall trend of games starting to look better.

This site shows past two days of releases (super handy site, also allows you to sort by genres or trending).

I started through it and 90% of this list was 30 minute visual novels about being gay or having mental illness and stupid half formed puzzle games. If these are the hidden gems on Steam then the situation is worse than I thought.

This is not a problem on steam.
But it’s a way bigger problem in psn even if it’s waaaay less games
