A method including receiving actuation of a universal button on a controller during live game play of a video game, wherein image frames of the live game play are displayed in sequential order, wherein a current image frame is being displayed when the universal button is actuated. The method including receiving selection of a rewind mode from features presented in a user interface displayed simultaneous with the live game play in response to the actuation of the universal button. The method including accessing from storage a subset of captured image frames generated for the game play. The method including entering the rewind mode by automatically switching from displaying the live game play to displaying the subset of captured image frames in reverse beginning from the current image frame. The method including responding to rewind controller inputs for controlling the displaying of the subset of captured image frames in rewind mode.

It's this how emulators create those incredible speed run videos? Play till you make a mistake, rewind till you get it right, edit.

Although some will hate it, this is the bit I love most about playing the classics they release, to have it (as an option) for suitable games would be great.

I dig it.

Sounds kinda like save states but even more forgiving.

I bet this will be the new "you didn't beat the game".

Not used it before? Even if you go into a boss with no intention of using it, it creeps in "It's quicker than a reload" becomes "This isn't going so well" until "I didn't deserve that hit" and soon you're trying to do perfect no hit runs because there's nothing stopping you.

You beat the game, but it leaves you hollow.

Who cares: if new accessibility options available means more people get to enjoy and actually see the work of devs who deserve it, so be it.

The "get gud" crowd can go suck a dick. And this from someone who spent his childhood in the arcades.

Yeah agree. Sometimes it's hard enough to avoid save-scumming, this might make it even harder for some lol.

But it's still nice I guess, more power to the user.

I'm sorry Sony, but there is no way to undo Concord.

I would have never walked through Duke Nukem 3d without the rewind option.

Nevertheless some developers probably would turn it off for more balanced difficulty and checkpoints.

...how is it even legal to patent shit that other people did for quite literally decades now?

like, when was the first emulator released that supported rewinding? mist have been at least 15 years ago right?

This is a really good idea. I love rewind on classic games. I especially love fast forward on ps1 games though.

How about the "respect the author's vision" crowd?

People who don't are entitled bitches. Difficulty settings are no longer enough, modern audiences demand not ever die in a videogame. So fucking lame.

While I totally respect the author's vision, I don't think this feature would take away the difficulty from a game.

Even if you rewind, you still need to beat the boss or the level. It's not auto-play; it's a more aggressive save system.

They just need an opt-out system for devs to disable the feature, if it's available from the hardware itself.

I have to agree with you.

The most annoying people on the planet have to be the toxic DarkSouls fan boys who will stop at nothing to let everyone and their dog know that you “didn’t really beat the game” if you used X, Y,Z mechanic.
I’m so tired of hearing this from basement dwellers. Hard core souls fans have to be some of the most toxic and annoying people around. It’s just sad at this point. And of course it leaked into Elden Ring too, with all the “using ashes doesn’t count” among other tings.
It got so bad around Elden’s Rings launch that it made me start disliking the game. It was every forum, everywhere online.

May I have a cookie?
Good. I have increasingly limited free time and no desire to spend it repeating entire sections of a game just to get to the part I failed.

Because even though the popular phrase is "don't reinvent the wheel", the fact of the matter is the wheel has been reinvented numerous times. That's why we have radial tires. Either way, companies file tons of patents and only half of them are even approved. We see these articles about what was filed, but never followed up to determine if they were ever approved or if the tech was ever even implemented.

Sounds like it’s just for rewinding the video, like you can on something like twitch.

It’s not rewind like they have for emulating old games where it can just track the memory state over time easily because the data is so small.
