Unless there is a new one on the market, there are no or very few .45acp lever actions around. Most .45 levers are .45-70, a very different cartridge.mAcOdIn said:Hey guys, looking at picking up a handgun to go with my lever action rifle and was looking for some input.
The models I'm looking at are the FN FNP and the S&W M&P series. Anyone have any long term experience with either of these guns? I'm trying to decide which of those two series and within them whether I want to go 9mm for capacity or 45 for power, I'm leaning towards the 45 as a few rounds or two isn't a huge issue.
I'm of course going to go down and test fire both at a range if I can find one that has them available but I'm looking for long term use advice between them. Also, maybe any tweaks or must have accessories between them that you own or recommend.
If you have a better suggestion I'm all ears but I want, well need, to keep it under $550.
But I'm really leaning towards the .45 then I can sell my 30-30 lever for a .45 lever and not have to worry about stocking different kinds of ammunition.
Hmm, it HAS been awhile since I last shopped for a lever action, I don't know why I just love them, lol, so you're right, I might be boned on that route.idahoblue said:Unless there is a new one on the market, there are no or very few .45acp lever actions around. Really, either of those pistols are great choices, I would lean towards the FN just because I like having a hammer rather than striker fired pistol, but I have not fired either. You are already planning on going and shooting them, so just pick the one that feels best.
The eternal .45 vs 9mm debate is a bit harder. If you are worried about over penetration, then maybe a .45 is better, if you are new to pistols, 9mm might be the way to go. Either round will serve well for self defense as long as you put rounds on target.
Can't really help for the rest, but in terms of customer service I found SW to be fantastic. I had one of their AR's a few years ago, had a problem, called them up. They said ship it at their cost, fixed it, and had it back in 2 weeks. So I can recommend them on the basis of customer service, but I don't know about the rest, sorry.mAcOdIn said:Hmm, it HAS been awhile since I last shopped for a lever action, I don't know why I just love them, lol, so you're right, I might be boned on that route.
I'm still thinking .45 even without changing my lever, I figure if I ever had to use it for defense, if I couldn't do it in 15 I probably wouldn't pull it off in 17, but then again, I'd never take such sloppy shots anyways, nor do I ever envision a scenario where I'd face a multitude of targets.
I was also leaning towards the FNP but S&W has a promo going to get 2 more mags via mail in rebate, so I was looking at that, but FN gives you 3 mags with the gun so there's only one magazine's difference at the end of the day, not a huge deal.
Looking on-line both models seem to be pretty popular around my small city so I don't think I'll have a problem test firing either, so really just wondering about long term reliability, ease of getting replacement parts, whether anyone's ever used a warranty through either company, that type of stuff. With my Marlin, getting parts is pretty simple and I know where to go, I don't know who's reputable to even look for parts and accessories for either of these two guns.
No worries, I'm still researching, I'll figure it all out in the end, thanks for the replies so far.idahoblue said:Can't really help for the rest, but in terms of customer service I found SW to be fantastic. We have a box of blue-tips, but rarely shoot them because they're (1) expensive and (2) hard to get.
great weapon, though.

Springfield XD .45ACP Compact is my carry pistol. Crossbreed Supertuck is my holster. TLR-2 tactical laser/light combo is my rail add-on.
I love both more than I love any of you.
If anyone would like to see pics, I'm happy to take some and post.
bro, it's awesome.Lionheart1827 said:I'm looking into getting the supertuck. I'm guessing you recommend it huh? Need a concealed carry holster for my 1911.

the 380 is all style and an alright record. Thank james bond for the popularity for that gun.stldave2 said:I've never shot a P99, but the PPK/S was one of the worst guns I ever owned. The fixed barrel made chambering rounds a nightmare. Unless you really slingshotted that thing it would jam trying to chamber the first round. That being said, it was super easy to field strip and shot straight and true... but I'll take my 9mm PPS any day over the .380 ppk/s.

fuck that is sexyDugungar said:AK101, fun as hell to shoot. Basically an AK47 but 5.56mm instead of 7.62.
Also a Glock 17 because 9mm is cheap and Glock's are reliable.
Nostalgic Nightmare said:Nice guns everyone, really all kinds showing up in here, I'm liking the variety.
Just picked this up for $475. Sig Sauer P220 in a .22LR. It came with a coupon for a .45 slide for $300, but I should be able to find one a bit cheaper. My main reason was for target shooting, I can get a box of .22 for like $18, and .45 well you all know how much that is these days. Im currently feeding it Winchester 555s and its been an absolute joy. Great for training drills etc. Plus you get 2 Sigs for about $800, that was too tempting to pass up.
Lionheart1827 said:Not at all, just very restricted. Cant have more than a 10 round mag, no threaded barrel, permanently pinned muzzle brake, no telescoping stock and if its there it must be permently pinned, pistol grip(usually this is the 1 out of 4 things that people keep on the gun. You can only have I think 1 of the 4 "bad" features. There might be another feature that I'm forgetting. Obviously no full auto, too.
Lionheart1827 said:Haha, yeah imagine if it had preview pics on the back of the case with a stylized artwork of the pistol on the front. :lol
All jokes aside, I like to think of my firearms as tools. Serious business.
very nice aside from the stock I love my wooden stocksDugungar said:AK101, fun as hell to shoot. Basically an AK47 but 5.56mm instead of 7.62.

22's are good for beginners and the ammo is dirt cheap but you'll want something bigger pretty soon. 9mm would be a great pick more bang for your buck and ammo is still affordable. Take any and all safety courses ranges provide. Most of all be safe and fun!Draft said:I want a gun so bad.
What's a good newbie pistol? Just to go target shooting with.

Draft said:I was thinking a .22, but you know, even though I am 100% serious when I say the only thing I'd ever do is go target shooting...I still want a gun that can kill things.
9mm might be up your alley then because of the bang for you buck factor. Any firearm can be devastating a point blank shot from a 22 to the head is pretty nasty. Best advice is hit the range and fire whatever firearms they have that should help you figure out what gun is the right one for you.Draft said:I was thinking a .22, but you know, even though I am 100% serious when I say the only thing I'd ever do is go target shooting...I still want a gun that can kill things.
