For you guys shooting .38 in a .357, be sure to clean your cylinder chambers well. The .38s are shorter and will build up a carbon ring in the chambers. Then when you try to insert the longer .357, it will stick. At best you gotta push the rounds in, worse case, it would cause increased resistance on the bullet when firing, which could cause a dangerous pressure build-up.

Bottom line, after a few hundred .38s, ESPECIALLY if you are shooting lead bullets, clean the cylinder well!

I grew up shooting firearms, or being friends with people who go spotlighting, don't know if that's a term used outside of Australia, but some of my country friends and my brother will hunt foxes at night with a big spotlight in the back of the ute. My brothers really into it, he's raising two hunting dogs (forget the breed).

Hunting and farming are the only real reasons to own a gun in Australia, so I've only ever really seen and used rifles and shotguns. The concept of owning and carrying a gun for protection seems quite strange and dangerous in a society where this right doesn't exist in the first place. The most paranoid people I know that live in Melbourne have a chair leg at ease of reach beneath their bed. :lol

I don't own a real gun (I have a full-metal replica of a Navy SEAL M1911A1 for poops and giggles). But if I ever did get a real one (and it totally would be a 1911 :D), it would just be for shooting at a range, since I don't hunt and would be too concerned about having one around for home protection.

Anyway, this thread reminded me of this music video, pretty interesting story behind how they made it too. Because Australia has such strict gun-control laws, the guys who made it had to go to Cambodia to film it it.

Hey guys, looking at picking up a handgun to go with my lever action rifle and was looking for some input.

The models I'm looking at are the FN FNP and the S&W M&P series. Anyone have any long term experience with either of these guns? I'm trying to decide which of those two series and within them whether I want to go 9mm for capacity or 45 for power, I'm leaning towards the 45 as a few rounds or two isn't a huge issue.

I'm of course going to go down and test fire both at a range if I can find one that has them available but I'm looking for long term use advice between them. Also, maybe any tweaks or must have accessories between them that you own or recommend.

If you have a better suggestion I'm all ears but I want, well need, to keep it under $550.

But I'm really leaning towards the .45 then I can sell my 30-30 lever for a .45 lever and not have to worry about stocking different kinds of ammunition.

Unless there is a new one on the market, there are no or very few .45acp lever actions around. Most .45 levers are .45-70, a very different cartridge.

Really, either of those pistols are great choices, I would lean towards the FN just because I like having a hammer rather than striker fired pistol, but I have not fired either. You are already planning on going and shooting them, so just pick the one that feels best.

The eternal .45 vs 9mm debate is a bit harder. If you are worried about over penetration, then maybe a .45 is better, if you are new to pistols, 9mm might be the way to go. Either round will serve well for self defense as long as you put rounds on target.

Hmm, it HAS been awhile since I last shopped for a lever action, I don't know why I just love them, lol, so you're right, I might be boned on that route.

I'm still thinking .45 even without changing my lever, I figure if I ever had to use it for defense, if I couldn't do it in 15 I probably wouldn't pull it off in 17, but then again, I'd never take such sloppy shots anyways, nor do I ever envision a scenario where I'd face a multitude of targets.

I was also leaning towards the FNP but S&W has a promo going to get 2 more mags via mail in rebate, so I was looking at that, but FN gives you 3 mags with the gun so there's only one magazine's difference at the end of the day, not a huge deal.

Looking on-line both models seem to be pretty popular around my small city so I don't think I'll have a problem test firing either, so really just wondering about long term reliability, ease of getting replacement parts, whether anyone's ever used a warranty through either company, that type of stuff. With my Marlin, getting parts is pretty simple and I know where to go, I don't know who's reputable to even look for parts and accessories for either of these two guns.

Edit:
Bah, in the end I guess it doesn't matter which is ultimately a little more rugged as if it feels like crap to shoot for me I won't get it regardless.

Can't really help for the rest, but in terms of customer service I found SW to be fantastic. I had one of their AR's a few years ago, had a problem, called them up. They said ship it at their cost, fixed it, and had it back in 2 weeks. So I can recommend them on the basis of customer service, but I don't know about the rest, sorry.

No worries, I'm still researching, I'll figure it all out in the end, thanks for the replies so far.

Still gotta get my license updated so my address reflects my current address before I can buy it, and I think I have to wait for the picture ID and not the temporary one, so I have at least a week to figure it all out.

Finally got my first pistol! Taurus PT1911 in stainless steel.

proud gun owner checking in.

Springfield XD .45ACP Compact is my carry pistol. Crossbreed Supertuck is my holster. TLR-2 tactical laser/light combo is my rail add-on.

I love both more than I love any of you.

If anyone would like to see pics, I'm happy to take some and post.

I've never shot a P99, but the PPK/S was one of the worst guns I ever owned. The fixed barrel made chambering rounds a nightmare. Unless you really slingshotted that thing it would jam trying to chamber the first round. That being said, it was super easy to field strip and shot straight and true... but I'll take my 9mm PPS any day over the .380 ppk/s.

We have 1 in the family. Interesting weapon. Big bang, no kick, crazy round velocity.

We have a box of blue-tips, but rarely shoot them because they're (1) expensive and (2) hard to get.

great weapon, though.

:lol no actually if I remember right (it's a pretty old pic) we were rapid firing my Glock using a 30rd mag... accuracy falls off pretty quickly:lol

I'm with you on the 5.7x28 ammo, I have about 200 casings that I reload to use with my buddies FN ps90... If I had to buy the ammo new I wouldn't ever borrow the gun.

I'd be scared to use that handgun in a real world scenario. You'd rip right through whatever you are shooting at and go through a few walls beyond that.

I'm looking into getting the supertuck. I'm guessing you recommend it huh? Need a concealed carry holster for my 1911.

AK101, fun as hell to shoot. Basically an AK47 but 5.56mm instead of 7.62.

Also a Glock 17 because 9mm is cheap and Glock's are reliable.

I only have one thing to say... Milt Sparks VMII. Was worth every penny and every one of the 200 days I had to wait for it. Best holster for a 1911, hands down.

Can you take some pics of the outer case and instructions? I've always wondered what a new gun comes in when you first buy it. `

Sure thing. Theres not much to it. Its usually in a plastic hardshell case and theres some form fit foam on the inside and instructions and safety are inside. Taurus has 2 special safety keys for the lock mechanism, comes also with a brass bore brush, two mags and a disassembly tool for the guide rod.

Thanks! Funny it looks like a kit for an electric drill, well functionality is the key here. I always what it looked when you get a new gun as opposed to like a new video game. :)

Haha, yeah imagine if it had preview pics on the back of the case with a stylized artwork of the pistol on the front. :lol

All jokes aside, I like to think of my firearms as tools. Serious business.

Nice guns everyone, really all kinds showing up in here, I'm liking the variety.
Just picked this up for $475. Sig Sauer P220 in a .22LR. It came with a coupon for a .45 slide for $300, but I should be able to find one a bit cheaper. My main reason was for target shooting, I can get a box of .22 for like $18, and .45 well you all know how much that is these days. Im currently feeding it Winchester 555s and its been an absolute joy. Great for training drills etc. Plus you get 2 Sigs for about $800, that was too tempting to pass up.

Grats on the new pistol! My first was a taurus as well (Baretta 92fs). I feel bad for you though, because once you pop, you cant stop. I give you about 6 months before finding a baby brother for it. :lol

Nice, I got the .40 cal P229. Slightly shorter than the P220, but easier for a concealed carry. Love the Sig, feels natural in your hands, and smooth when firing. I've found it to be a hard to beat experience.

Not at all, just very restricted. Cant have more than a 10 round mag, no threaded barrel, permanently pinned muzzle brake, no telescoping stock and if its there it must be permently pinned, pistol grip(usually this is the 1 out of 4 things that people keep on the gun. You can only have I think 1 of the 4 "bad" features. There might be another feature that I'm forgetting. Obviously no full auto, too.

What about NYC?

I'd love to see some shopped fake case covers for guns showing if they were sold like other consumer products.

My girlfriend is looking forward to getting a rifle she can enjoy (The Saiga 7.62 is a little too much for her).

I'm thinking an M&P 15-22 will be coming in the near future.

What's a good newbie pistol? Just to go target shooting with.
22's are good for beginners and the ammo is dirt cheap but you'll want something bigger pretty soon. 9mm would be a great pick more bang for your buck and ammo is still affordable. Take any and all safety courses ranges provide. Most of all be safe and fun!

I agree with Zeke check out .22 handguns or .22 rifles first.. if you only plan on taking out paper and cans and stuff its the cheapest solution.

I know you asked about a pistol but I have so much fun with my 22 rifle, you can pick up one of these for around $120 new..I have a cheap red dot site on mine and its so fun to plink with!

Marlin 795 .22lr semi auto rifle

If you are looking for a .22 pistol go down to a dealer and handle a few of them and see what you like, Revolver? Semi Auto? etc..

DoomGyver

For a beginner I would recommend buying a pistol in a self defense caliber like 38 sp and then buying a conversion for it so you can turn it into a 22lr. That way you can plink with 22lr at the cheap while learning the feel of the gun, how it operates, and how to clean it. Then you can step up to the original caliber once you feel comfortable with the gun.

Also saves a lot of cash, because 22lr is cheap and most self defense rounds in 38 and 357 have gone up in price considerably. It's all about muscle memory, especially in a high stress situation.

I was thinking a .22, but you know, even though I am 100% serious when I say the only thing I'd ever do is go target shooting...
I still want a gun that can kill things.

well then you are set because a .22 can definitely kill things and needs to be treated like any other handgun 9mm. .357 .44 mag .45 acp etc.. etc..

9mm might be up your alley then because of the bang for you buck factor. Any firearm can be devastating a point blank shot from a 22 to the head is pretty nasty. Best advice is hit the range and fire whatever firearms they have that should help you figure out what gun is the right one for you.
