In my experience, that isn't true. If you install over old versions of ilife o5, for example i DVD, old projects aren't compatible if you delete the old app first. I think software like idvd6 actually just add things into the existing idvd5 app - a 'fresh' install appears to delete things idvd 5 needed, where as installing over the old one adds things making the app huge.

It's simple yes, but far from 'clean'.

That does sting. I was telling myself that the USB ports on it eliminate my potential need for a hub but still...do good deals exist for Apple accessories?

Argh, I hate thing trend of keyboard shrinking in both the PC and Apple world. It's a goddamn desktop keyboard. Why does it need to be as thin and crunched together as a laptop one? Are numberpads just not seen as sexy these days?

That aside I think I prefer the look of the older iMacs abit more, although I suppose it's nice to see the expected jump in specs.
 
If you were using your computer for productivity then you'd have a wired keyboard, or at least that's what they're probably thinking.
Would you be able to use the old keyboards still with the new macs?

If by old keyboards you mean anything that's USB or Bluetooth, then yes.
 
The .Mac judgement -

If you aren't looking for a place to use PHP or other developer oriented solutions - .Mac is actually not that bad an option anymore. Its still a bit on the pricy side but compared to the "traditional combo meal" of $7 hosting per month + $25 flickr pro, its a good choice. 20GB or some form of scripting (PHP or other) would have made it "teh ultimate".
 
I just called the Toronto Apple store and the guy said he didn't know when they'd be selling these. Maybe they'll just ship them to stores starting tomorrow.
 
new imacs - meh. they're not horrible, but i don't see them as a huge step up that the 3rd gen was over 2nd (and 1st).

ilife 08 looks ballin' though.
 
Gotta love how that glossy screen is capturing every reflection in the place. Are they not offering a matte option similar to the Macbooks?
 
what is the processor/spec bump like on the 20" iMac compared to the previous one? Assuming I might be able to get one at a decent price and it isn't a lot thicker, I think I prefer the white one

God damn thats ugly. WTF Apple with the glossy screen. The nested rounded rectangle look is too much like a webpage for me, especially with such a harsh contrast like the black. The black really adds nothing to the whole design.

I have not lived the same experience, everything was flawless and there was no compatibility issue with my projects whatsoever...
 
The new black+metal look is REALLY reminding me of HDTV designs, at least the Sony models I've seen. I still like the white iMac, but this comes off looking like a more high-end product.
 
Need to see it in person before I can say for sure whether its hot or not, but right now Im leaning towards Hot. The black border will also give the impression of a larger screen.
 
Glossy screens FTW. :D

I like the new iMac look. My next PC upgrade will be to an iMac if there's a quad-core one by that time.
 
well, that's because you said it on pages 1, 2, 3, and 4. i can't wait to see how you'll write that same opinion on page 6!
 
I don't like the new iMac. That black bezel around the LCD looks fugly. Actually makes it looks kind of like a giant Zune. :lol

(a) You might want to actually see it in person before you make a statement like that, and (b) I think a certain puck mouse would like to have a word with you.

Seeing a real life pic of it makes me like the design more even if I'm still not as in love with it as I've been of previous macs.

The black border reminds me A LOT of many PC laptops (also with glossy screens).
 
The puck and the cube are certainly worse than this. I also think the "lamp" iMac is pretty bad, though I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I don't have a problem with this new iMac. I think it looks good. Not "OMGDROOLMUSTHAVENOW," but it's not fugly. You don't want to have it look exactly like the ACDs just for differentiation's sake, so this is one way to refresh the look. Thinner, little more color, kind of in tune with the iPhone's look (though not as close as some of those recent fakes).
 
just checked the specs - VESA wall mount is only an option on the 24...which is annoying because the basic 20 looked the better value

The main issue IIRC was the position of the fans (on top), which resulted in many people resting their books on top of it, causing it to overheat. My dad used to have one in his office - it was pretty cool.
