It's not a question of whether "1 million players" is good enough. It's a question of how much Ubisoft spent to make it, how many they need to sell to break even, and how much that Tencent acquisition offer will be

Yet GAF will pontificate over it for the next 3 months despite knowing dickall about any of those actual figures.

By comparison, Ghost of Tsushima sold 2.4 million worldwide the first 3 days on a single platform (PS4)

Sold, not "players"

I'm sure the budget for GoT was a fraction of whatever Ubisoft spent to make Shadows

And that makes it a better game? cause apart from looking good *sometimes* GoT is a pretty shit game.

I left the AC franchise after Black Flag, but Shadows run laps around GoT in the looks department (which it should since GoT is a PS4 game) and has more mission variety, better combat, better stealth, etc., from what I have seen.

With that said I think padding an open world is a waste of resources, I really miss AC games with large contained areas to explore and not a huge map full of boring repeated shit.

A) "players" =/= copies sold
B) no matter what, it's Assassin's Creed, a huge franchise at this point, even tho it's way past it's prime

Does anyone have the feeling Ubisoft might try to crank out a follow up sooner or later? Maybe a more modern Japan setting?
They could actually use a Japanese protagonist ?

Maybe that guy that recently went assassin's Creed for realzy on that streamer/scammer?

It didn't sell 1 million (yet), this number is coming from Ubisoft’s subscription service: https://tech4gamers.com/assassins-creed-shadows-1-million-players/

While this achievement is incredible, it should be noted that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has not sold 1 million units yet. The game is currently available as part of Ubisoft’s subscription service, so a large chunk of the player base likely came from this service.

On Steam, the game's all-time peak was 41.412, lower than Veilguard...

Not one to defend Ubi Soft but it looks like they put out a decent game that appears to at least be better than say Rise of the Ronin despite all of the hate it got in the lead up.

I doubt Ubisoft+ has that many subscribers... Maybe they would have gotten people to jump in for this game and cancel, but the game is also high ranked in sales on Steam and PSN (where ubisoft+ premium is not available, because that would eat their primary revenue source).

This game needs to do 8-10 million to be considered successful.

6-7 million is meeting expectation

Anything less than 6 million is bad for Ubisoft.

This is a correct asssessment. They probably need about 4-5 million just to break even. 6-7 would be meeting expectations. Assuming they can hit these numbers in early days at full price. It becomes significantly more difficult to hit those numbers when the average sale price drops to say 50 or even less. They might be able to sweeten the pot with a subscription deal with GamePass and/or PS+.

I doubt the game will be an outright failure though.

First CCU is a terrible measure of success, especially for single player offline games. Second, we haven't even seen weekend numbers for the game yet.

It's the number one selling game on Steam, #2 on PSN in US and GB, #1 on Amazon.

I don't think the game is going to be the boon Ubi Soft had hoped for in Japan with all the negative buzz around it, but it never really had to be.

since people from purple just ignore to answer if that number is copy sold or just player, let me ask again atleast it is concurrent player, right?

Let’s be real though, it’s been a while since the last AC so of course in the first 24 hours there will be a surge. By the end of today or this weekend at most I can see how there will be a steep decline in the player numbers.

man, since when a multi hundred million dollar game, take years to make and get delay after delay which supose to make game better accord to copium guy, debut with only 44k on steam and it's normal, like does people just pretend game will sell 100 folds on playstation to make up for steam?

1 million players😂

Taking that engagement approach.
My thoughts exactly. They don't say "copies sold", but people in this thread are running with it cause they wanna be the "good guys".

The game is hot garbage even when you take out the Yasuke controversy. Just watch gameplay videos, the "stealth" is even more laughable than Star Wars Outlaws. The combat looks awful, especially when you put it up against Ghost of Tsushima, a now 5 year-old game.

This game allegedly had a 300 million budget. 1 million players day 1 for such game is a failure. It needs to sell 6-7 million copies to earn back their budget and is seems like it will not be the case at this pace.

I am calling shenaningans from the parties involved. We do players nonsense for AC launch game now? How many free keys did they give to reviewers, influencers and such?

imo ubisoft is gone.
This would probably have to sell like 10 mil to make a dent.

Yep. It got the enormous hate from day 1 for no reason.
Seems like it's a good AC game. Maybe a bit too late after AC franchise hype but still.
We’ve seen the 10 mil figured banded about quite often over the last 2-3 years as the break even for big AAA games. Shadows is a very big on, at the very top end if budgets are to be believed. So it needs to be an enormous success to not be a failure in the eyes of Ubisoft, and if it’s a failure, Ubisoft are in such a bad state that it’s highly likely to finish them off.

No one will know with any certainty for a couple of months, at which point it’ll become obvious, as leaks happen, investor meetings occur, people get fired etc. Until then it’s mostly launch period noise with arguments that will support either side.

Wow I watched a bit of this game to check it out. The voice acting is probably the worst I've ever heard in a AAA game ever (probably). I can't imagine anyone listening to some of these and not laughing. Combat also looks pretty mediocre. In typical Ubi fashion though, the game does look great.
Id advise anyone to play in Immersive mode

That's just the YouTubers who need more footage to rage about. 😂

Valhalla did nearly 2 million actual sales on launch day.

We will see. All you guys were trying to say FF16 first week sales meant it was a success as well. 😱

I'm ready to call this game a flop. Steam peak CCU won't break 100K. Amazon PS5 sale number is mediocre.

Even the market can read between the lines. This game is cooked!!!!

Market can read between the lines?
What between? What’s hiding there?
Aren’t we all surprised the game is actually pretty good and looks great?!
So wouldn’t that mean the market is manipulated by grifters into believing the game is something it isn’t ?

It’s quite pathetic that many people are so vehemently trying to use this as a win against the “chuds” while it is obviously a hopeful tweet at best. It’s not decided yet but it doesn’t seem like it will get the numbers it needs. 1 million “players”, not sales, on day one for a game this big is not too promising. And I don’t want them to go bankrupt because AC is one of my favorite series ever since I played the first game in 2007. But they have to stop with the bullshit agenda pushing to survive.

Yeah, the victory laps are interesting. It's way too early to say it's successful. Of course, it's way too early to say it failed either. So far the numbers are lower than yesterday, but this weekend will really tell what's what.

They somehow deserve some success on PC. They ditched the EGS exclusive deal, didn't make Uplay mandatory, added Steam achievements, and made it Steam Deck compatible. The game is also pretty good, and doesn't suffer from any major performance issues.
