Initial review after 6 hours.
Despite outdated engine, though kudos to devs for in-house tech, and a slew of glitches (mostly AI) Atomfall is surprisingly competent foray outside of Rebellion's own comfort zone.
The game feels really and unexpectedly good. Eploring is very engaging, the shooting is solid, wirting is great, art is cozy and atmosphere is very thick. What wowed me the most is how Atomfall immerses you in the world: there are no quest markers, limitations or handholding. You can slaughter the entire village of quest-related NPCs and still finish the game. There's no karma, agenda or even markers: you're literally free to play as you please. Narrative really respects your intelligence too, you are collecting a puzzle piece by piece from dialogues, random chatter, notes, even wall graffiti. It's been a while since I saw a game that really showers you with proper yet easy to pick up unintrusive narrative cues. And to my surprise it was helmed by Jonathan L. Howard, and he is a very good author. Now I really wanna see more of this British Rural Apocalypse with bigger budget and less jank.
Gameplay is... OK, I guess? Stealth is janky but broken enough to roll with it, shooting feels solid and melee is kinda fun and punchy. Most importantly you're not annoyed by shit like hunger, weapon wear and tear and othe cheap tricks to make the game slower and drag some gameplay hours.
There are few glaring issues though. Main of them being: Inventory. It is too comically small to be comfortable (and a huge fun breaker at late game) on any difficulty. Plus we really need more inventory bindings at least on PC. Crafting is primitive too, almost useless and kinda bulky for what it is. I also thnk that UI in general could've been way better and less gigantic, but this is Revellion's first 'big' game so those mistakes are understandable.
Nonetheless, I beg you to support Rebellion with actual purchasse if you love Fallout or first STALKER. I really think they are ounto something with Atomfall here. And now I really wanna see fully realised FPS/RPG by this team. Especially since Bethesda went full Starfield in recent years.
