Battle Rap |OT| Gon watch this work

I've been watching more Fresco battles. Dude is hilarious. Like a battle rapper designed by Tetsuya Nomura.

Announced earlier tonight, Slaughterhouse is doing a tournament/reality series called "Road to Total Slaughter."

While chopping it up with Sway on MTV's Rapfix Live, Joe, Royce, Joell, and Crooked I announced that they'll be releasing a new battle series called Total Slaughter. The show will be a reality series featuring eight battle rappers going head-to-head in a bracket style format each week. Slaughterhouse will serve as producers and judges on the show. The eight rappers partaking in the reality show are Dizaster, Math Hoffa, Daylyt, Arsonal, Cortez, Marv Won, Big T and Aye Verb.

“It’s giving these guys a platform that they didn’t have before,” says Royce Da 5’9″. “Everybody knows they’re great if you follow them, so the goal is to put not only them, but battle rap itself, on this platform. The winner of each side will co-headline the main event, [with] two legends in the battle game. It’s probably the biggest battle you can put on right now, on behalf of Shady Records, Shady TV and Slaughterhouse.

Joe Budden added, “It’s a reality series as well, ‘The Road to Total Slaughter.’ We’re gonna put those eight guys in a house, they’re gonna live with each other for a week and you’re gonna be able to see them prepare for it as well.”

I'm not mad at the match ups, even though most of these dudes have already battled each other but reality series? Living with each other? No thanks.

Matchups:
Left Bracket
Dizaster v. Math Hoffa
Daylyt v. Arsenal

Right Bracket
Cortez v. Marvwon
Big T v. Aye Verb

Whoa. This is the thing Jack Thriller is hosting?

Fascinating. I wonder how they chose who to compete. Seems like they've got one representative from everywhere except they've got two people from NYB. And yeah the match ups aren't bad at all, though I could've swore Cortez had battled Marvwon already.

EDIT: the winner should get a feature on the album or something..

Damnit, I wanted to give this shit a break and wait for them to all come out sequentially on YT but you guys make me want to check that battle out now. Was Diz better than his last few performances? I heard he wrote more than he ever has before for a battle which makes me want to check it out more.

#ThrowbackWednesday: [URL"http://youtu.be/Rsg8fLNgZ80"]Kid Twist vs. Dumbfounded[/URL]. Kid Twist is one of my favourite nerd rappers TBH.

Eh I think dumbfoundead had rounds 1 and 3 for me his shit was funnier

Lmao smack must be pissed. All this potentially dope content going right past his doors. He better get Diddy to hook him up on Revolt or something.

Say word!!! Mook and Lux once again!! I'm wondering why the bracket is so small?? Only 8, FOH!!! Small sample size.
8 is a good size. 16 too many, would take too long, rappers spread thinner across producers, less exposition for each character, need a bigger house (lol). I would've replaced Cortez with like Pat Stay or something.

I still think Mook's entire shit against Solomon was garbage af. Hopefully Lux puts him in his place quick like.
This isn't even a match I want to see, if I'm honest. Rather watch two PGs dudes scrap than this, or pretty much every match up in the tournament. The names are a draw for most of course but this isn't even really a rematch I want to see either. Money better spent building a time machine to go back in time and record the rest of the 15 rounds they went at Blackstar.

These reality TV rounds are apparently 1 3 minute round apiece and theyre doing them all in one day. What a joke.

If it's true that they only get 3 minutes apiece, the tournament should blow by quick. The whole house aspect is whack, nobody cares to see that. At least it'll be sanctioned by real judges so we can get clear cut winners. But that's going to add another level of chaos as well.

I'd like to see Jones and Lux or even Jones and Mook since it's obvious those two can't stand one another.

Budgets and all that. Still not as bad as the second WRCs league battles... where they had to battle something like 8 times in one day, acapella, and mostly freestyle since they didn't know who their opponents were.

So why not just put these dudes in a contest to make the best hook-less song and then get featured on the album or some shit? I feel that's more in line with what they're doing here.

This makes no sense. Only one round is scust. Hate one rounders, beyond just being subject to serious order effects.

I bet Lux vs. Mook is the same time and on beat too.

One round means Rex/Diz basically gonna stomp through half this competition smh

Can Diz really flex his style over a beat though? A lot of his performances rely heavily on no time limit and being acapella so he can deliver dramatically.

If they are battling on beat, I'd think that would give Marv a slight advantage over some of these other dudes. A lot of them have built their styles on acapella format. Having the structure necessary to ride a beat and still be effective might be tricky for some of them.

We'll see though.

IIRC Diz has had experience rhyming over beats in his early days.

This is strange because it pretty much requires a different toolset than acapella rhyming, I can't even make predictions based off of battles or music.

EDIT:

New, promising battle league starting up. Beasley voice and all.

He does have experience in it, yes, but that stuff was freestyle and not that great. I remember seeing him battle Nocan a few times and he always lost. He really perfected his style and grew in the acapella era.

Was that other MTV battle (the one for a million bucks) that he won over beats?

Well.. that's disappointing. You'd also think they'd be smart enough not to have any kind of audience with the way shit spreads online.

World Series of Hip Hop? Wasn't that one big scam? I think that had beats but I'm not sure.

Dudes were tweeting about it:

https://twitter.com/Harlem_Dream

EDIT: Buddens vs. Hollow?

Rex apparently put the beats on Marvwon, Diz whipped Math, Verb beat T, and Cortez had some emergency or something.

Apparently everyone choked except Daylyt, Ars, Diz, and Rex.

ibw4Q6iXjRU9Jr.gif
The dude tweeting said Verb lost. This looks like a huge disappointment. Not even 3 minute rounds now, it's 90 second rounds? Fuckouttahere.

That list of people not choking makes sense, they're about their business and won't squander opportunities. Dizaster has wanted to punch Math's face in ever since SM3, but I would have expected Math to be on his shit considering someone is actually giving him an opportunity after everything that's happened. But for real though, how do you choke in front of industry folk?

So how much validity do people find in Hollow's criticism of Lux's lyrics being superfluous/vacuous? Is that something that people can dismiss as an effective battle tactic that plays well to a crowd and works in that context, or is that actually seen as a legitimate criticism of Lux?

Because I often find that cries of pretension or loftiness often say more about the people making the charge than the artist being criticized.

I mean, I don't know shit about pharmaceuticals but I can't imagine Vicoden can't be prescribed in liquid form.

Does anyone remember a single bar, line rebuttal, personal or scheme from the tsu surf vs calicoe battle?

Honestly, it's like it never even happened.

But it did, and it was such a waste of time

sorry, missed your post lol.

I don't know man. There is certainly something to be appreciated about how people spin a verse into something that utilizes the English language to it's fullest. That's what Lux and say, a Nas do. They take small, often ordinary observations and inflate them with words words words. As far as literal exercises go, it's worth pursuing. But it's a battle in some ways that type of shit is easy to deflate because it's really circuitous, maybe autofellatious in intent, and sometimes comes off as swagless. And you know what? sometimes that shit comes off in a very cold and impersonal manner. There is a lot to be said for saying things in a concise, direct manner. It resonates with more people more often just by design. Neither is wrong.

Unbias Review UW High Stakes recap. Damn that's long.

Screen-Shot-2014-02-01-at-7.33.41-AM.png

Surf turned himself in on an outstanding warrant and will do a few months. Surf and Suge also made a cameo in the new Meek Mill & Jadakiss video. I see that it's filmed by the crew UW uses for their promo which were really good.

This is sort of what me and Pearlito's Way have been arguing over for the past few weeks in this thread and the UW High Stakes thread. lol

Not a single one. Never even went back to rewatch it.

This was... ehh. I watched it yesterday and can't remember a single thing from it. I guess that speaks for the battle.

Yeaaa. Money Bags is aight but overall meh. You know what I did watch today that I missed out on?

Danny Myers vs. Mr. Mill$

Organik goes into full detail on BO4 cancellations.

Word is NOME 4 might happen in DC. Really curious what kind of venue they'll get. I have high hopes for NOME 4, though I really don't care for Goodz vs Verb if that is the headliner. At the very end of the Unbias Review High Stakes recap there's Beasley talking about it and them discussing a potential PG vs. top tier event.

SHUFFLE-T & MARLO VS MARVWON & QUEST MCODY

these guys are always pretty funny.
This was funny, especially when they parodied the proposal :lol

I don't think I've seen a 2v2 where one side wasn't 10x more prepared than the other though.

Fuck off, I was gonna recommend it we watch together in a sesh

That karate kid scheme tho
Karate Kid scheme is GOAT.

Well said, and I totally agree with this. But my problem is with how blatantly wrong the criticism was - yet it played to the crowd well, despite this, and made a lot people look foolish upon reflection in a very ironic way (when you expose the argument of Hollow's bars).

It's common criticism of many rappers I love and see tossed about a lot and are just as daft - but they manage to stick, due to it being hip hop.

How was it wrong? Hollow was going on about the thicker than guard dogs thing in interviews with a room full of hip-hop aficionados who couldn't tell him wtf that was supposed to mean and the there's the Vicoden thing. It's more of an argument about whether that even matters than if Hollow was right or not; because he was right. Hollow brought the crowd back when he sort of addressed one of the biggest criticisms people have of him which is the nonsensical bars, most notably the intercom in a generator line. It made it personal, and everyone in the crowd has probably seen that battle and seen his opponents clown him for that line since too.
