Sure.... the english isnt great but its pretty obvious what the poster is trying convey.
My issue is not with the desperation but with the sour grapes. If they ended up in 3rd place again, they'll say those unit sales don't matter but their actions lie counter to their claims. They are trying desperately hard to sell these things at a huge loss and claiming it's not important to them to sell consoles. :messenger_neutral:

Yeah sure they want people to subscribe to Gamepass but they need consoles in people's hands to do that. So in the end, console sales matter.
Is it time we stop with this narrative that console sales don't matter. Link us to when Phil Spencer specifically says, consoles sales don't matter. My guess you heard a Xbox fanboy say just that when defending the decision to move 1st party games to PC. That happened years ago. Time to move on.

Even Phil himself said console sales are important to them as Gamepass is primarily a game download service.
So i dont know where this whole 'Xbox says console sales dont mater to them' comes from. A link would be cool if someone has one.
Microsoft has never said console sales don’t matter. Let’s try to keep these conversations honest.

I'm not sure if MS said that word for word, but they must have framed it as it wasn't as important to them as Sony or Nintendo. https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/11/...nterview-xbox-project-scarlett-xcloud-e3-2019

I think it’s easy from the outside to judge the health of our business around how many consoles any company sells. In the end, how many subscribers you have to something like Game Pass, how many games people are buying, those are much better metrics on the health of the business.

The business isn’t how many consoles you sell’

Also, have you been to any sales threads recently? Some of your people were saying this in the sales thread :p . No time to dig up old posts though.

So basically, you lied. Even in your follow up, there’s nothing there comparing their strategy to their competition with respect to reliance on console sales.

Thanks for coming clean

No need to go digging. I think we’ve already established your penchant to misremember and misconstrue stuff.

Um, no, I didn't lie. He was dismissing being trounced by Sony and Nintendo in hardware sales and saying their business model is different. But in the end, they need the hardware sales to sustain the growth of their Subscription-based business model.

The rule of thumb is, “when you’re in a hole, stop digging”
Direct quote:

I don’t need to sell any specific version of the console in order for us to reach our business goals. The business isn’t how many consoles you sell. The business is how many players are playing the games that they buy, how they play. So if somebody bought an original Xbox One from us on launch day, and they’re buying and playing games, I don’t need to sell them an S. I don’t need to sell them an X. If they want to stay on the Xbox One they have and stay as a great member of our community or subscribe to Game Pass, that’s a great business for us.

See any mention of their competition in that quote?

Xbox is Cloud, PC and Console. Soon to include Mobile. MS considers every one of those tiers very important.

Even if thats true, warriors saying something ona forum doesnt mean Microsoft themselves said it, and thats what seemed to be upsetting you.
Why would they even spend hundreds of millions of R&D on console development, and take losses on consoles sold, if they didnt care how many they sold?.
I mean it is fact that Gamepass is an important part of Xbox, and you need hardware to use Gamepass. So yeah its a silly thing to say no matter who is saying it.

Now i believe they DID say in 2014, when they stopped giving out hardware numbers, soemthing about raw console sales numbers not being as important as it used to be as there are so many services and forms of revenue on consoles these days, which is a fair point, but its still not the same as saying'console sales dont matter to us'.

Its always the same with warriors on here, if you say the same bullshit so many times, it becomes 'fact'.

I read this as please don't judge us on how many consoles we sell as we were in a distant third place, but going forward, what's important is not how much hardware we sell, but how many people are subscribed to our service. Yet, they are selling these consoles at a huge loss . See? their actions don't match their words, since they need hardware sales as much as their competitors to increase their subscribers in addition to other means such as mobile and PC. but you continue to defend your leader.

I mean, he is basically dismissive of the console's sales. This quote is from 2019 so MS flip-flopping is nothing new anyways.

But MS said that unit sales don't matter, yet they are trying to basically give this thing away for free at this rate. It's cheaper than the Switch which is a 6 year old console with ancient hardware.

Us deal; Buy an Xbox Series S for $250 and get a $50 gift card. So it's basically $200.

Imagine being critical of a company dropping prices on their console which is how things have historically always gone. What's next cheering a company for raising prices? What strange times we live in.

People who say sales don9't matter most have missed when Microsofts CEO said in two separate occasions that they were beating either their competition months in a row, or later that they were beating their previous consoles with more sales than ever before than 6the brand, which Phil Spencer repeated recently a couple days ago in an interview.

Well people like you will read stuff a certain way as you're a warrior, its simple.
The fact is saying 'Raw console sales dont paint the full picture of success as there are so many services and revenue streams open to consoles these days', a true and fair statement, is not the same thing as saying 'Console sales dont matter to us', something that is entirely different.
I mean in recent quarters hasnt Xbox basically caught up to Nintendo revenue wise?, and thats with Switch selling like double XB1 and probably Series consoles combined. If there was ever proof of what Phil was saying in that statement, that is it.

But alas, warriors see what they want to see, then get triggered by it, even though whars triggering them hasnt actually happened.

I actually think it's a smart move to make temporarily on certain occasions such as the holidays. But constantly lowering the price of your product has some risks as well such as devaluing your product, especially compared to your competition when Sony raised the price of their console, and Nintendo didn't discount their product for 6 years. You risk the perception of desperation. This is especially true when you claim that your product is sold out due to high demand and low supply.

Devaluing isn't much of an issue here as long as MS is careful with S promotions, given that the X isn't being discounted at all in most places the Series is fine.

Devaluing when going wrong is what Microsoft did with the Xbox one from October through Dec 31st 2014. It wont Nov and December even in multiple countries against the PS4, but it made it so MS's return to regular price hurt them, and they waited too late to make a new price drop official and that pretty much ended the Xbox One being competitive with the PS4.

Who is constantly lowering prices? This is the first official XSS price drop in two years. There is nothing desperate about that at all. The product that is sold out a lot is the XSX but that product is more difficult to manufacture. The XSS is the mass market device designed to be regularly available and affordable.

Theres going to legitimately be more people with Series S out there than Series X.

And somehow this isnt holding this generation back?

What the fuck was MS thinking?
They are not thinking, they are making moves from a place of desperation which is unfortune. Can't wait until Phil is gone at Xbox.

If they don't deliver next year I am sure he will be out next year.

They are thinking, correctly I might add, that 'holding back the generation' is complete nonsense and an affordable console is a great way to get more customers in their ecosystem. I like a console getting cheaper more than one that gets more expensive.

What's holding this gen back isnt Series S. It's almost every game being cross gen with PS4 and Xbox One. Two systems from 2013. Series S blows those two systems away in Vs. threads.

If first party devs arent changing, third party wont either.

Some of y’all are so deep into this game bullshit you can’t see the forest for the trees.

I was watching a digital foundry video the other day about Series S holding back the other consoles. The biggest argument was “but the performance wont hold up with ray tracing!”

As if anyone buying a Series S gives a flying fuck about ray tracing. Like having ray tracing turned off is some game breaking experience. Kids these days play Switch games for Christ sakes. Have you looked at a Switch game lately?

We’ve certainly gone from “nobody wants the Series S” to “so many people will buy the Series S that it’ll outnumber the X and hold the generation back”

Ah well.

Xbox keeps delivering record gaming revenue. In the eyes of the Microsoft board, Spencer’s doing quite well.

not surprised some of you want him gone, since he’s behind some of Xbox best strategic moves in years.

I don't have Xbox Series S yet but I'm trying to buy something from the Store with my old account and for some reason I can't. It says that something went wrong try again later when I try on my PC browser. I also installed the Xbox app on my phone but it doesn't work on that either. I search games but I get some error message when I click them.

Digital Foundry are in bed with both Sony and Microsoft. They will never come out and say what they really feel, they have to pussy around certain things and beat around the bush. The fact that they’ve talked about Series S holding games back TWICE speaks volumes. We all know what they want to say.

These are the same guys who were too afraid to properly criticize Ragnarok for looking like a PS4 game so they just praised it for being polished instead.

And it’s not about simple ray tracing. It’s about larger scale battles, improved game design, higher fidelity, and you know… superior technology allowing for devs to better realize their vision. Especially artists.

Jesus, some of you think it’s still 2010 with the way you absolutely minimize the potential of this medium.

Think bigger.

The Xbox Series S is also getting a $50 discount on the Microsoft Store, which is a first since the console launched two years ago alongside the more expensive (and harder to find) Xbox Series X.

Here are the main Xbox and PC gaming deals Microsoft is offering for Black Friday:

In two years Microsoft has given the Xbox Series consoles, well one console, the first price cut of the gen.

As of now the price cut is temporary until Nov 30th according to the MS store, however if things go well at this price, especially since retailers have already been at that price, don't be surprised if MS pulls an early Xbox One and makes the price drop permanent after November 30th, or extended it for several more months at least.

However, strange as it may be there is no discount on the "All Access" installment version of the console, which I think is a missed opportunity, You would think Microsoft would have followed phone companies on holiday monthly discounts.

Disappointing!

I was expecting sub $200 for Black Friday.

You can still find them for around $200 on Facebook marketplace and Craigslist in the US.

Target is giving a $50 gift card with the $250 version.

These $100 discounts are crazy to me seeing as how the other next gen consoles are still out of stock. 1 despite seeing a price increase. The demand for this console simply isnt there it seems.

And none of these you list will be compromised for flagships by the Series S.
Going with the same SSD and CPU rules that out.

Ok let me rephrase.. it’s still by far the best deal in terms of value, nothing comes close, and that’s without any discounts.

What I meant is that I thought they would go mega aggressive..

Its not just about ray tracing, did you not see the performance reviews for some of the most recent games? The console can't even hit 60 FPS for some next gen games. This should have no issues with doing at least 60 FPS at 1080p like the PS5 and Series X.

But its whatever, don't want to derail the thread. Can't wait until the numbers come in after the holidays. We will see if this thing does end up selling millions this holiday! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I wasn't even really looking for one of these, but with the sale and a 109 dollar MS credit that would expire by March, I just picked one up for 236CAD/176USD all told. And then they messed up the first order and charged my card the full amount, so they fixed that and gave me free two day shipping too. Gotta be one of the best deals on primary gaming hardware around today!
