It was "the IceBorg versus the SuperBrat," in the eyes of the world: the 1980 Wimbledon final pitting Björn Borg, a four-time champion who never lost his cool in a game, against John McEnroe, who seemingly couldn't keep his cool in a walk-in freezer with Isaac Hayes on his headphones. Janus Metz's Borg/McEnroe paints a very different picture, diving into both men's psyches to find them all but identical, differing only in their outward manifestations of relentless pressure. An acting-forward sports film capable of engaging viewers who don't know their 30-loves from their birdies or hat tricks, it has mainstream theatrical appeal, though it may draw more attention on pay cable.

AV Club
It’s a sports movie for masochistic, vainglorious athletes.

Playing tennis may not seem the best use of Shia LaBeouf's talents, but the star is terrific in a role that shrewdly plays off his controversial off-screen persona.

I wish they'd do a Senna/ Prost...

That shit was legendary, but they had to do fucking Rush with the Hunt / Lauda rivalry that barely made a buck ($90m WW on a $40m budget).

It looked pretty neat in the trailer

How many years until a Nadal - Fed movie?

This looks neat and I'll see it as a tennis fan. Can't see it being interesting otherwise.

When did the AV Club become to shitty and cynical? The first page and a half of their review is complaining about the Toronto Film Festival, ffs.

Reviews seem pretty divisive. I'm gonna have to end up seeing it at some point tho because I can't pass up the genius casting of Labeouf as McEnroe

Saw this last night at the Vancouver Film Fest and it was excellent. No idea why the reviews haven’t been stronger. Both actors disappear into their roles and the drama is strong throughout. It succeeds in being a character study of two different, highly driven people, who are a lot more similar than anyone really understands.
