Bungie's Marathon set for April 12th reveal

If we take the 1%–5% of F2P players who actually spend money as a baseline, then I think 3 to 5 million copies sold at $40 roughly equates to 100 million players in a F2P game. And the business model on both are way different. To me, the interesting aspect is going to be the business model and game design around it, in a post-Helldivers 2 world (which was praised for it), and after the Bungie debacle. Marathon is going to show whether Bungie still has its head up its own ass, or if its ego is damaged enough to have learned that their so-called GaaS "expertise" has been a joke.
$40 base entry is a major risk, and even if they do end up going that route it will still have microtransactions. The success or failure of this game will rely heavily on how they decide to monetise it. Personally, I hope it’s F2P, and if it is good and able to sustain players, then release seasonal paid expansions.

It's possible they could have both F2P and a baseline $40 version which has content that would cost more if you otherwise purchased it in the F2P mode.

I'm really not against either business model, and if they decide to have a paid $40 game I'm OK with that if the player progression is a decent length like it was in HD2.

Seems like they must be huge and you have to gain progression on your character in order to explore further

Seems a little low to me as well but maybe that could be a good thing if they are intricately designed and feature lots of exploration over time.
3 maps will be fine for a game in this genre. Probably around the same size as The Hunt Showdown. That had 3 maps at launch (1km x 1km for reference).

Anyways Hype!!!! less than a week away.

I'm excited about the prospect of a beta.

I have wishlisted Marathon on PSN and I signed up for the new Beta Test program. I am wondering if that plays into this game potentially.

I hope the beta drops somewhat soon and we get to catch a glimpse. This game still isn't confirmed for 2025, so who knows how close it is to releasing.

It may be smart to have the beta drop in May and a release in August or September before GTA onslaught hits.

There's rumours of the closed alpha coming very soon. I think some folk have access to the discord already. Seems like it will follow the same path of D1 if true. Closed Alpha, Open Beta, release soon after. I'd say September is a good bet.

GTA is getting delayed till March '26 minimum if you ask me.

I think GTA6 makes November or December of this year

June - Death Stranding 2
September - Marathon
October - Ghost of Yotei
Nov/Dec - GTA6

Hoping we get this kind of release schedule

Think your timing will ultimately be a bit off.

While GTA6 in November is possible, I think that puts a ton of pressure on Sony to deliver enough units to satisfy demand in a shorter pipeline. I'm betting on October.

I think it looks like this

June - Death Stranding
July - Marathon
August - Ghost of Yotei (and probably early August at that)
October - GTA6

I think for Marathon you need to release it in the summer while schools are out.

I also think it's super interesting to see how Sony has treated Marathon and Death Stranding vs Ghost of Yotei and Intergalactic. If Ghost doesn't get a big event in the next few months, it'll be a disappointing result from Sony marketing.

I'm with James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford on the timing. I think July is too early. But I'm in the GTA delay camp though. If its not then you could be correct.

I do think the Alpha sign ups (if there are any) will be straight after this reveal though.

CEO of T2 retierated that they're planning to launch this year just a week or so ago. I think people think GTA is going to be delayed because a) GTA is often delayed and b) because we haven't seen anything of it yet beyond that first trailer. I don't think these are any real indication of the progress of this specific project.

We'll probably find out more re: Marathon next weekend, but I wouldn't be surprised if the beta is by the end of the month or next.

The fact that datamined details showing pre-order bonuses suggests to me that this won't be F2P. Meaning they're going for immediate influx of revenue due to sales of the game. It'll be interesting to see next how they manage content and whether they go the Helldivers 2 route or the Destiny 2 route.

Yeah don't think their plans have changed. $40 for the base game. Seems in line with the genre as well.

I'd expect MTX to be business as usual. Battlepasses, skins and the like and a gear/economy reset with each season also.

Like I said, I think if they run it for 40 they're going to have really impress out of the gate with the beta and they're going to have to do serious localization efforts globally and marketing to boot.

Pretty big deal to have a new IP launch from Bungie in this industry. They're definitely looking to build hype at this point, so we'll see if they cooked or not. Every question that comes up for Marathon is going to come with more questions. The biggest I think is going to be if the game is successful, how they balance Marathon and Destiny.

At 40 dollars base there really isn't a lot of examples of how this game could perform with the high water mark really being Helldivers at this point. But it has so many more advantages than Helldivers being a Bungie game, being on Xbox rather than just PS5 and PC.

I think you probably want at leats 15 million units sold across PS5, PC, and Xbox.

Let's play a game where they're evenly divided.

5 million PC - 31.4 dollars (157 million)
5 million Xbox - 28 dollars (140 million)
5 million PS5 - 40 dollars (200 million)

Total: 497 million dollars. So let's round that up to 500 million.

That's not bad ahead of MTX and combined with continued revenue from Destiny and eventually licensing fees for Destiny Rising.

I'd bet that if this game plays out like this, Bungie will be back in the black by this time next year.

There's a large segment here that hates on anything GaaS regardless of what it is. People were very negative on Helldivers 2 as well, and that crushed.

They are not representative of the market. GaaS is a boom or bust type of market. Bungie hasn't missed, so I vote for BOOM. This game will do amazingly well. Not saying it will match Helldivers 2, but it will certainly be one of the most played titles. The game has a unique enough style and that classic Bungie gameplay feel married with a genre that hasn't had a ton of AAA production in the space.....I think it's the recipe for success.

I also suspect that this will come to Switch 2.
Totally agree. I can’t wait to play this on my Xbox.

I can imagine if this performs well on Xbox, Sony might greenlight Helldivers 2 for Xbox as well.

I think that GAF is definitely not representative of the market here, but I do sympathize with those saying that it would have been nice for a single player campaign here.

This is a big deal for the industry and I think after Saturday, the hype will start ramping up that a new Bungie shooter is coming out and it's available for everyone. Since it is coming to XSS, I would not be surprised by a Switch 2 release.

I'm not saying this is make or break for Bungie, but if this game is successful, it really sets them up nicely for Destiny 3. Outside of Valve, it's really difficult to have two games in the top 12 on Steam and this would probably push Sony into the realm of 3 with Helldivers.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to PC revenue for the quarter that this releases.

This is pretty much guaranteed to be a smash hit out of the gate if it shows well on Saturday.

It's if its got legs will be the true measure of success.

If Bungie plays their cards right they will have two major GaaS titles in different genres; Destiny with PVE and Marathon with PVP

There will be crossover interest between both but it’s good that they are branching out and diversifying their portfolio of GaaS titles

Marathon seems poised to be a breakout hit given it’s in a fairly less saturated genre of the extraction shooter. They should be able to add tons more polish and production values while making it more appealing to mainstream audiences

Honestly, wild if they end up with two hit GaaS titles. You'll still have people saying the 2.4-3.6 billion was too much and a bad investment, because few people can admit to being wrong these days.

People were writing obituaries for Bungie entirely too early.

I on the other hand loved me some Destiny 1 & 2. Looking forward to seeing their first new game in ten years myself.

Nothing wrong with GAAS if its done correctly either.
Destiny 1 and 2 were one of my biggest gaming disappointments ever, unfortunately. And I really tried to like Destiny 1 especially.

Thousands of hours in crucible, thousands in halo... I'm a pvp guy and extraction games can fuck right off, I feel this will flop big time and it's an easy pass however if miraculously it feels more like a true bungie pvp game and the extraction stuff isn't that over bearing I may try it, but I'm not counting on it tbh.
I can never understand this mindset.

>puts in thousands of hours into a certain game mode/type
>developer tries their hand at something else
>"this is not for me I want it to fail"
>goes back to (hate) playing the game mode/type ad nauseum

It's not as if a developer doing something else will negate their existing modes or games or prohibit other developers from doing so. Bizarre.

Fragpunk had "pre-order bonuses" and turned out to be a F2P title but you might be right of course. We'll find out soon enough.

Sorry to hear that. Both games definitely got off to a rough start. I still say if it wasn't for Vault Of Glass the game would have not been around today.

Certainly not for everyone, but then again what game is?

Has the artstyle shifted more towards an overwatch/fortnite look.

yeah the announcement trailer was "colorful" but this feels like it's going more animated where the CG reveal was looking more exaggerated realism
