CD Projekt Red's Franchise & Lore Designer Cian Maher, Is Former Games Journalist Who Wants To Punch Gamers

Remove witcher good storyline, You got nothing. The gameplay especially combat is not good
It's like playing a story driven MMO. In the beginning for let's say 2 years the world is interesting, great characters and amazingly well paced plot. Regardless if the gameplay is good or not you keep playing to continue reading the story like a great TV series or a book. But then that interesting world starts to become forgotten and rewritten into a shallow husk of it's former self, the characters become flat or fake or the characters you knew have had their appearance and personality altered from how they look to how they sound and to how they act, the story is poorly paced and is inferior to the storywriting in the first 2 years compared to what is being written now. And thus when a game that is being played for it's story and characters has no story anymore and characters so warped from their original vision what happens? You stop playing the game, you stop watching the show and you put down the book.

It's really no different from loving the Restaurant you went to as a 10 year old and the food was amazing, the place was well staffed and the customer service was excellent and you had great experiences with the other people working and eating at the restaurant but now years later you come back and the food is bland, understaffed, customer service abysmal, and every experience is either bitter, constructed and unnatural or miserable. The restaurant has changed and you move on to something else.

“This isn't really a new or even worthwhile observation, but people online are way too obsessed with other people's lives and choices. Who gives a shit what anyone else is doing once they're content and not harming anyone. Let people be happy and mind your own business,” he concluded.

Remember when developers of a game were unknown and they usually just had a single person be the face of the product and they would praise their customers and shill endless positivity to sell the product.

Might be time to muzzle staff again because more often than not they do nothing but harm the brand in the eyes of potential customers.

Then again I do enjoy watching companies burn and the endless drama they bring 🤷‍♂️

If someone hates the industry and the costumer base so much, why is he working here.

He could love creating games and hate gamers that attack the art form.

I mean you have gamers doxing voice actors and sending death threats to people based on chin size and you are shocked that some working in the industry don't care for these types of gamers or? lol

I said the other day I should give my copy of Witcher 3 another chance..... Now I'm not so sure I will.
It took me awhile to get into it. Let us say, 2 years after it released. I dove in, balls deep up to the esophagus.
Wonderfully packed game. Great loop, great side quests, writing, music... it was an all-round great experience and once I realized I was at the end of all of the content...200+ hours in...I got depressed, lol.
I didn't end up finishing the final battle until after a month. Which, when I loaded TW3 up, I started walking around the world, then finally initiated the final battle.

I regret not getting into it sooner, but I think I would regret not going through it at all. I still have to go through it with the big, new update, on Death March!
I"ve begun a new playthrough a couple of months back, I think I will continue it soon.

Look...all things happen for a reason and I think its best you played it years after release, with a clear perspective and many updates later.

The general Loop I like, like going from town to town killing monsters for money regarding the side quest, but I think that is as much as I liked with Witcher 3. That is still good enough for me tbh

I also like music and still randomly play the OST from time to time.

I didn't care for the story (but I think I hated the story in all 3 games tbh lol)
I hated the gameplay as it felt horrid, but I hated the way the entire RPG system was nerfed.
by the time I was finishing that game, I just wanted to be done with it and I rank it below the first 2.

I'll still buy Witcher 4 and the remake, but not day 1. Anything day 1 from this company is now long dead and its a year or 6 months after release type thing now. I think I like the lore, concept and general Idea of Witcher much more then its execution, I don't know if it does anything the best for me to have it day 1 anymore.

I have a feeling, in a few years time, people with this sort of attitude and the associated companies with these hires will become less favourable in the public eye and HR. In a volatile market, such as video games, the last thing you want is causing division, losing potential customers and thereby risk leaving good money in the process.

It might've worked in the last couple of years when very few were aware and pushback was marginal, but things are changing and stuff like this won't go unnoticed or unchallenged so easily anymore.

I read guitar magazines sometimes and I imagine reading an article in there where the guy is like “I hate guitarists so much and want to punch them.”, “guitarists are dead.” Of course I would never read that because it’s totally insane. Yet for some reason gamers are fine with these types not just writing about the games they play but making them too. And then they automatically simp for these lunatics and their games when people quote them. It’s totally crazy.
It's mostly because if there is any pushback from gamers they get labeled as sexist or racist or transphobe. Retards took over the gaming industry and all the smart people got pushed out. It's an industry that's now run be jocks and mentally insane people.

CDRP also hired Insomniac's ex story co-lead (blue haired body type 2). Looks like this company went all in on DEI

I need to start spending less money anyway. Things like this just make the decision easier.

Let's investigate everyone's personal views in a company with thousand of employees in order to find something to be outraged about

Embarassing. I dont give a damn about individual X political views or whatever. If his product is good, I buy. It's that simple.

Not playing games due to the creator world views instead of judging the damn product for what it is make you just as much a snowflake as those at the purple forum
It’s not a random political view, it’s not as if people are digging out his opinion on some irrelevant subject like Brexit or abortion. It about his attitude toward the people he is making a product for, he works for a game developer and he hates gamers, you don’t think that is information the potential buyers of his product might want to know.

Let's not pretend Eastern Europe doesn't exist shall we?
I am always on the lookout for non-woke rpg and horror games that are on console (PS5 and Switch), but I admit to not having much experience with eastern Europe game devs. can you list me some examples that I can bookmark? Don't say CDPR. Too many things I am noticing about them lately that don't sit right with me.

I worked in dev for 3 decades and I have no fucking idea what a "franchise & lore designer" actually does.

Is that a synonym for Junior Designer, because they lack the technical skills or creative chops to actually contribute in any sort of meaningful capacity?
If I had to guess, I’d say it’s their job to populate and maintain the games wikia 🤣

I miss 2015, and even when Blood & Wine was released, we weren't wasting a lot of time with all this talk of DEI, misguided lore, necessary representations of Californians in a medieval world inspired by a Polish author, etc.

It's time for this madness to stop, and for us to be able to play games for what they are, rather than trying to represent our era at all costs.

I'll wait calmly for its release, and then we'll see.

No Geralt was already kinda sus. Witcher 3 w/o it's incredible lore/story telling would be a rather mid open world game. Will hold off judgement until it's out but yeah I've seen this happen so many times before it's hard to not be cynical.

No, it's not relevant

I dont give a damn if the person likes his job or not, or he thinks his customers suck. Me, as a potential customer, only care about the final product, as it should be.

If it's a well done product that I would want to consume, who cares? Do you think CEO's of the companies that make products you consume care about you? Share the same world view as you?

Outrage culture wants you to care, but seriously, it's not relevant

Well, it’s relevant to me and most people who are normal and rational.

If I plan to go to a steakhouse, and somebody told me there are serving staff there posting on X about how much they hate non-vegetarians, I’m going to go somewhere else, and so will most normal people.

Well, luckily you arent able to read people's minds, otherwise you wouldn't be able live in society.

Nah, most normal people arent that fragile. If the steakhouse worker is doing a great job, then I dont give a damn if he hates non-vegetarians. As any normal adult would.

Have you seen Miyazaki views of americans? Guess no more Ghibli movies for your, if you are american.

Imagine being this fragile

Is this person the writer or the director of The Witcher 4 game? If not, then fuck all of that.

Most of the crap thrown around in this topic is just scaremongering and very half-assed attempts at creating guilt by association.

I'm going to buy The Witcher 4 game, maybe even pre-order it when available, unless there's an actually objective problem with it upon release. Not people throwing mud at walls and seeing what sticks.

You are making a false equivalency fallacy. If Miyazaki sacrifices lambs in his apartment I will be personally outraged but his games will remain the same.

The views and fringe opinions of the WRITER of a narrative focused game or movie have a direct impact on its quality. This is not arguable. So, whoever cares for TW lore and story should know that the guy in charge of it is an ex journo with literally ZERO track record in fantasy worldbuilding and whose opinions (believing that established lore doesn't matter) get in the way of making a great game.

I meant Miyazaki from Ghibli studios, not the game designer lol.

And yeah, it's arguable. You have no idea how many media you've consumed from creators that you would call bigot. Seriously. Specially writers.

It's unfortunately something shocking nowadays, but some people know how to be professional and leave their own opinions out of the office.

Again: give them shit when their product suck. You are a customer, so you should care about the product, not about the creator.

Pretty much all Eastern European studios (and I really hope with CDPR included, jury is still out for them) are devoid of the westoid leftist wokester bullshit.
Studios like Warhorse (Kingdom Come Deliverance), GSC (Stalker), 4A Games (Metro), Mundfish (Atomic Heart), Amanita (Creaks), Ice Pick Lodge (Pathologic 2), CBE (Someday You'll Return), Madfinger (Gray Zone Warfare), Wube (Factorio), Frogwares (Sinking City), Astronauts (Witchfire), Flying Wild Hog (Evil West), Starward Industries (The Invincible), Saber (Space Marine 2)....

Just to add to this; There's also Spiders from France who make various lesser known AA games (Bound by Flame, The Technomancer, Steel rising, Greedfall a.o.) and Streum On studio (EYE Cybermancy, Necromunda: hired gun). Up and coming is Sandfall interactive (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33).

One to watch out for is Rebel wolves. That studio is packing some promising talent.

This and the quoted post is just a "sample" of what you can find coming from Europe.

Going to write all those down and hope they stay strong, and resist being tainted by "progressives." My main genres are RPGs and Horror. Also, No Gatcha mechanics.

Like everyone else on this board, I am paying the salaries of these people so they can make video games. I'm hardly "ruining" anything since it's MY money that makes things possible unless you tell me videogame studios are non-profit.

The only ones ruining this hobby are those who despise it. Someone who hates the products and its audience doesn't deserve a job in the industry.
You paying dudes salary... lmao you one of those people 🤣
