China Discusses Sale of TikTok US to Musk

TikTok has already been used in other countries to skew elections. And it works. One famous recent example is Romania. Russian-funded AfD in Germany is also pretty successful using TikTok. The problem is that people, especially young people, don't have any media literacy at all. You could make a TikTok about how the Moon doesn't exist and is actually a leftist conspiracy, and people would fucking believe it. But banning social media is just a stop-gap solution. The real solution is to educate kids in school about social media (and media in general) and how clever propaganda can be. But there will always be people around who are just dumb pieces of shit.

That girl in the video is exactly the target audience for manipulation. She thinks she's too smart to fall for bullshit, but she really isn't. And that's not something to be embarrassed about; There are some really clever people out there making propaganda.

It looks like Rednote is slowly geolocking content by IPs. Slowly they're making it so that USA users will only see content from USA.

Americans literally just ruined the app for Chinese Americans who used the app to stay connected to China/Chinese friends in China.

Can't make this shit up.

Every generation has idiots. Parents on the 80s thought listening to rock music would summon the devil, and that touching a gay person's arm would give you aids.

The problem is now idiots and smart people have the same level of exposure.

Here are TikTok’s options given the looming Jan 19 deadline for divestment:

1) Divest and sell to US company, at a huge profit margin

2) Do nothing. App stores will delist the TikTok app on Jan 19 so no more new updates. If you were accessing it through a browser, you wouldn’t be able to if you open a new tab. Users will actually still be able to use it for a while in its current version

3) Shutdown completely

It’s curious that ByteDance isn’t that interested in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibility to its investors by selling TikTok off for a huge profit, like any other normal company.

Grindr did it. The US government said it was a national security threat for a Chinese company to own the gay dating app and everyone was like yeah, info about who is seeking gay trysts and dick pics are obvious Kompromat for a geopolitical adversary, so the forced divestment went through without a peep.

But not TikTok. They’re using our Constitution against us by arguing that the forced divestment is unconstitutional.

All these creators are now freaking out because ByteDance is pushing for option #3 instead of #2. The company is likely hoping that maximum pressure from its hysterical GenZ users might somehow move the Supreme Court to reverse the ban.

You remember the biblical story of King Solomon where two mothers were claiming to be the rightful mother of an infant? He called for a sword and said that he would cut the baby in half in order to resolve the conflict. The real mother begs the King to give it to the other woman while the false mother agrees to the proposal.

The false mother has ulterior motives. She doesn’t have the baby’s interests at heart so she doesn’t mind destroying it.

If you are a TikTok user, ask yourself why the parent company would rather destroy the app entirely? They don’t have to - they have option #1 and #2 available to them.

Instead, they will just shut it down completely and, as is being reported now, people attempting to open the app will see a pop-up message directing them to a website with information about the ban.

It is perfectly feasible - it's called not using social media because you don't need to look at cats or tits the whole day, alternatively get scam crypto advice. Ask anyone above 30 - they will tell you how easy it is.
Right there with you. I do not have a YouTube, or a Facebook thing. My phone, iPad, MacBook, PC, etc has my Navy Federal bank app and what comes with the iPhone. Pretty much this is where I hang out and get news and if it interests me I’ll dig into JSTOR or something.

We do not have lives on our phones and we work. I’m 44 and my wife is 47. We have been together since I was 17 and the whole technology probably just passed us by. I didn’t have my first computer till I was a Sgt in the Marines at 24, so maybe we just never got interested.

We also enjoy being outside after work and horseback riding. Just doesn’t fit our outdoor life to be on media watching others when we can be doing things ourselves and together.

seems like what tiktok will do is essentially do nothing and just run it in a somewhat hobbled state. app will get delisted but the app won't delete from phones but won't get any updates or new app users (insignificant sideloaders).

not sure how it would be banned from being accessed through the browser, tiktok probably will just not comply which would then force the government to enforce bans though ISPs or would need to seize the domain. but it will probably start to lose bigger advertisers and bleed advertising revenues quickly.

Wasn't Elon going on about bringing back Vine not that long ago? I mean I guess if he wants a short form video service Tik Tok would have the user base instead of rebooting Vine if he could retool Tik Tok.

Just realized… how did TikTok succeed and vine fail? Was Vine just too early and missed the window?

Funny when their app is sharing US content to Chinese users it's quickly censored but TikTok US is a goddamn free for all for some of the worst ideological bullshit you can think of :pie_thinking::pie_thinking:

It’s by design. Dumb down America (mission accomplished), while providing educational subjects to their users.

Although I can’t entirely blame China, when American companies are all about dividing the country, stealing your data, and peddling garbage.

Musk buying it would be the best outcome, considering how much he has improved Twitter/X for the good. I hardly ever use TikTok though, it feels very invasive with it constantly begging for access to my contacts and notification permissions.

I'm in the UK and envious of America's action over this horrendous application. Or I am right now (I'm sure Trump will die on a hill for TikTok now because he values Likes over the brain health of US teens).

It's basically twitter for pedophiles and other awful people.

Do you have an actual example of them allowing a pedophile to remain the site or are you just talking about someone who's LGBT or something? Because that's a pretty hefty allegation.

all the social medias have awful people, and awful people use the internet so there's really no way to curtail that. My problem is when the site allows and condones the type of awful people that can cause real world harm due to negligence.

The guy just landed his second booster and the only one to do it in history, twice.

I don't really give a shit about tiktok but I'm not a fan that it being a Chinese owned platform.

Scientists and engineers that he paid for did it.

There is quite the difference, unless you also say that Steve Ballmer plays basketball in the LA Clippers.

Let's us buy it and use it for good because
That's not the conclusion you should be taking from it...
I was pretty impressed he caught that 2jd booster, I also really don't care whether tiktok exists

Elton can own it or not, just don't buy a Switch 2

Supreme Court was unanimous when it upheld it sounds like. Looks like fire sale or closure will happen unless Congress changes mind. Not very likely plus they work very slow.

Edit: New story quotes Trump saying the law allows president to chime in. Never read the law. Not sure if true. But maybe there is discretion for executive to determine if its still a security risk. If there is then it might be a case where the app is banned for a day or two then allowed back. Pure speculation.

I read the legal opinion. Here's what you should know:
➡️TikTok lost almost every single argument it made.
➡️This is a 9-0 ruling. That sends a resounding message.
➡️TikTok's data collection practices are insane. The app gather data that other apps normally consider off limits, including the content of users' private messages, and the full contents of a user's device contacts.
➡️It's the last part that concerned the SCOTUS justices the most. If you have an email contact who has a TikTok account, China has your name, email, and possibly your phone number, photo, and more.
➡️Chinese law requires its social media companies (including TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance) to "assist or cooperate" with the Chinese government's "intelligence work" and to ensure that the Chinese government has "the power to access and control private data."
➡️Congress and the FBI worry that this info (and more) could be used for espionage or to compile blackmail dossiers on elected officials or government employees. All 9 SCOTUS justices agree that the need to prevent espionage overrules any First Amendment concerns.
➡️You should have stopped watching those stupid dancing videos months ago.

Good. I just spent my morning trying to convince my tiktok addicted friend why this ban is a good thing, but i ended up losing brain cells thanks to that conversation.

I swear their main objective was not to spy on americans, but to make them dumber.

Yeah, I tried having this talk with my wife, and she just told me "then why aren't other Chinese apps banned? This is all just lobbiest from Meta and other US social companies trying to kill TikTok".

There is a point to be made about why is TikTok targeted and nothing else.

I've never used it or downloaded it so I don't really care either way.
Same here, I see people at the many sites were I do IT, on their break just mindlessly scrolling through bullshit clips, truly some real brain-rot shit. I don't get it. I take a peek at Instagram every now and then to look at girls ass pics (that's what Instagram feeds me on the search section 🤷‍♂️) and I start scrolling, 2 minutes later I have to catch myself and I quickly realize this is not good for my brain.

My Daughter (15) is in knots over this thing. We limit her TikTok time via the parental controls in iOS, and she's still freaking out over it. I'm really hoping they just shut it down.
