Clair Obscur Expedition 33 | Preview Thread

KyoZz

Tag, you're it.
So happy for this French studio especially as a first release! If the game is as good as everything we see and read it's going to be a killer.

I like the desperate tone and I agree with the preview the OST is amazing.

I got anxiety thinking this game was coming out in March. I have a busy month in my personal life and am still early in Avowed and the new WoW patch and season starting, but this is an April release.

Time to finish things up and prep for this game!

I always take previews with a grain a salt. But what I've read so far all sounds great, and the game just keeps looking better every time they show it.
This will likely be one of my only day 1 purchases this year, not only does it look great and is releasing at a lower price, but it's nice supporting a relatively small new team that's doing something that looks better than most of the AAA offerings in basically every way.

One of the few games on my list to play Day 1 this year. It's great to see the previews so far are positive, let's hope all this translate into the game too. So far, everything they've showed looks very appealing.

Looking real good, going to be another great year for RPGs, KCD2, Pirate Yakuza, Suikoden Collection, Claire Obscura and Lunar all within a 3 month period, wonder what else awaits us in 2025 👌

Karak Karak take.

Looks interesting.

It was indeed. I found it to have more issues that most other previewers but that simply means what I played I liked. Instead of thinking it was some kind of world changing thing.
The only thing I will say that was stunning was the Music which was incredible. Thematically and gameplay supporting.
While I do see others posting that it has this and that amazing bit, I actually felt like some of the additions or mechanics were pretty bog standard and not world altering. Of course the entire title and how it plays out after 40 hours will be the real indicator.

I'm gonna be negative, but this game already looks old. I don't know what it is, if it's that UE5 look thing, but the shine has already gone for me. Still interested though.

I watched Fextralife's preview. He enjoyed it overall but did note a couple of concerns: performance issues and rather limited, unexciting exploration. Re. the latter, he said the structure is fairly linear, with only occasional offshoot paths. He commented that the game's worlds, while beautiful, do not feel very "alive."

I didn't realize the game was fairly linear, so that's news to me. I'm fine with it personally. I'm not up for another large, open-world RPG that takes forever to get through. I'd prefer a taut, well-paced story. I'm still not sure I'm up for the turn-based combat, but it seems to have action RPG elements infused into it, so maybe I'll like it.

So only 1 playable male human in the party. lol wonder if the rest of the ladies will go harem on Gustave, well probably except the character that's voiced by Shadowheart's VA, Maelle, she's Mc's sister according to the characters description on the game's website lol

Sounds good to me, I'm ok with some linearity as so many games tend to go hard on open worlds and when they do rarely are they amazing so I think this will be good.

Turn based for me is glorious, I mean I love both rt combat and turn based... Turn based is just a nice alternative classic style.. Can't wait

How vital are the real time elements? I'm hoping it's not too essential, like can you survive if your timing/aiming sucks?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

You can turn it on auto. That was one thing I could see being at odds. Its a weird combination that feels unique for awhile but many hours into it, repetitiveness could really hurt it. We will have to see. The complexity of the characters and skills kept it at bay for MOST of the preview, but after awhile the basic moves(needed in many cases) became oddly bothersome.

That being said a ton of it is HIGH ass quality. Like very high. I could see it doing insanely well

You're pretty much the only game YouTuber I trust these days. You just call things as they are and don't make excuses for things just because you are hyped for them. Keep being based.

So this is basically a modern The Legend of Dragoon both gameplay wise and with the same linear structure? I'm in quite in to be honest

I can't get over how much the protagonist look like that pattinson dude...
The game look and play how modern ff games should look and play, imagine an european studio at his first game stealing the lunch money from square, you love to see it:lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I was already convinced before. I started to watch some stream but it "spoiled" too much for me in the first few minutes.

I am glad to see the positive reactions and details on some combat mechanics.
Really looks like what I wanted for a modern Final Fantasy : modernizing the genre but keeping that old school feeling.

Day 1 for me and going blackout from now about this game.

I've liked the look of this since it's reveal, Very pleased it's out so soon too.

I hope it's a massive success to show stubborn publishers like Square Enix that turn based is still something people want especially if done right.

Game looks incredible and the fact that it's only 50 dollars instead of 70 makes this essentially a must buy for me. I also love turn based combat alot and the fact that this game has a mature plot as well has raised my hype levels considerably.

I´m a bit burned out on turn based combat after Metaphor, but this looks really good. If it reviews well I probably will have to buy it if only to support projects like this.

Some investor must have pump big money into this. You dont usually get Charlie Cox, Mr Gollum and 2 high profile voice actors in gaming as your first project.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Lip sync seems really off in the IGN footage, which is weird as the characters seem to be staying what's spoken so it's just out of sync.

Never trusted a preview in my life, and I'm not starting now.

Still...

Previews used to matter because journalists would go full throttle on games before the review. It was basically a review of the current build minus a score.

Now they're complete puff pieces. Real previews went away and journalists accepted embargo periods that were beyond reasonable and entirely favor publishers over consumers.

Worse, we're in an era of gaming where influencers/streamers have a lot of say in what is actually seen as a good game/worth buying. It's because they've largely filled a void that reviewers used to fill until their relationship with publishers because parasitic... ironically the influencers also now have a parasitic relationship with publishers...

"Clair Obscur"...who ever came up with that title should stop smelling their own farts.

I don't get the complaint about the name. As the posters below stated it, it's very on point with the main theme of the game.
Outside of that, it might be long but it sounds good to my (french) ears. It flows well (ironically in english because 33 in french breaks the flow for me xD).

Is it because it's a french term and difficult to pronounce for non French people ?

It's a painting technique and the story is about an evil paintress. It couldn't be any more on point.

Cat Glasses GIF by Leroy Patterson

It is a painting technique which use light and dark contrasts (as the name implies) to emphasize parts of the painting
