Clair Obscur Expedition 33 | Preview Thread

I don't get the complaint about the name. As the posters below stated it, it's very on point with the main theme of the game.
Outside of that, it might be long but it sounds good to my (french) ears. It flows well (ironically in english because 33 in french breaks the flow for me xD).

Is it because it's a french term and difficult to pronounce for non French people ?
The person who came up with the title reminds me of a person who in Texas orders a croissant by saying "kwah-sahn" instead of "kraw-sahnt".

The fact that this will be on Game Pass day 1 is nutty. I seriously can’t wait to dive into the story here, and we’re seeing South of Midnight in the same month, and then DOOM a month after, with Avowed having just kickstarted the year?

I think we’re eating good, friends.

"Clair Obscur"...who ever came up with that title should stop smelling their own farts.
Look up the definition of the term first, maybe? It’s very much an apt title for this game.

The person who came up with the title reminds me of a person who in Texas orders a croissant by saying "kwah-sahn" instead of "kraw-sahnt".

So… Them pronouncing the name of said pastry correctly? Are French people only allowed to pronounce terms of things from their country the right way?

I guess you're trolling.
It's a french company who decided to use a french art term to name their game, sets partially into a Paris inspired city and with a lot of french name and famous painters, about a fighting a paintress.

I'd say they couldn't find a better name for it.

Chiaroscuro is the English and international term for it. I'd understand if it was called Clair Obscur Expédition Trente-Trois. Mixing in French with English in the title is what I think is a bit pretentious.

But I digress, I'm clearly in the minority and I'm going off topic. :pie_ssmiling:🥖🗼

I'd argue that outside of the missing accent on the "e", you could say the title is actually French. (If I am nitpicky, the cover title is written with capital letter which you usually don't put "accent" on as you don't put the dot on the "i" like they also omitted on their official cover art. But this just me messing around now)

I can see that it can feels pretentious to mix 2 languages. Actually I was first thinking Clair Obscur was one of those French word which is used also in English (Like Déjà vu etc....). But I can see now it might sounds weird from an english speaking POV.

I personally like it because it fits the theme of the game and keep the french culture inspired setting (and the origin of the studio).

I think just being French is associated in some people's minds with being pretentious - and not without cause, heh. So, to someone like that, the use of a French term in a title makes it sound pretentious.

But this isn't that. It's just a French studio using a French term that fits the subject perfectly.

I like it. To me, it sounds distinctive. It sets it apart. We get games with Japanese words in their titles. Why not a little baguette energy?

Lmao, difficult to pronounce?
It's Clair Obscur, what's difficult to pronounce about that.
I think it more with people not knowing that Clair means Light and are just thinking of the female name and Obscur ( Obscure) meaning Dark, Unknown
Combining them together without full knowledge of the meaning it can seem like a Girls name and Obscure.
Seems random, but it actually fits the title if you know the meanings.

You can turn it on auto. That was one thing I could see being at odds. Its a weird combination that feels unique for awhile but many hours into it, repetitiveness could really hurt it. We will have to see. The complexity of the characters and skills kept it at bay for MOST of the preview, but after awhile the basic moves(needed in many cases) became oddly bothersome.

That being said a ton of it is HIGH ass quality. Like very high. I could see it doing insanely well

Thanks for the response, I haven't had time to watch the preview videos yet, but will make time later today (including yours)

I like turn based and action games, and I don't mind like for example, the button mashes in the Mario RPGs, adds a bit of interactivity. But the trailers and the stuff the devs have said makes it look like Expedition 33 takes it a step further, and I DON'T like turn based games trying to out right attempt a fake action feel. Strategy should come first and foremost in a game where that is the primary combat setup. Plus while I do fine, I am disabled, and too much action stuff can make me tired, so that was one aspect of the game I was worried about.

Ya the auto setting is great. I do wish that it just played out without showing the QTE timers still and then just plastering the word AUTO over them. But regardless that would mean that you can sit back and just handle the turn based part without the need to hammer those.

I saw Fighting Cowboy struggling with the parry. Did you have a hard time with it?

Nah it means Obscured Clarity in reverse. Visas Marr is one of my favorite Star Wars characters and her name is Marred Vision in reverse and no one ever complained about that.

It's an amazing title for a game about Existentialism, a painting technique, and likely the Protagonists not understanding the full picture(heh) of how the world they live in works.

Great title that sets it apart from most other games with it's artistic flair and is derived from French and is made by a French dev team.

Can you block/parry indefinitely?

That worry me a bit also. It doesn't look like to have a restriction.
You can either dodge or perfect dodge. Some effect will trigger on perfect dodge.
Parry has the same tight window than perfect dodge but it's a different button so if you're too early you'll not get the safety of doing a regular dodge.
That's the risk of parry but it grants Action points on success.
Parry looks very OP. But it looks like some monster have some combo/attacks that need to dodge/parry several time with different timing.
Also I saw a statut effect making you unable to dodge. So maybe there is the same for parry.
To be honest, all this block/parry stuff make me think of Paper Mario. It probably don’t block 100% but help a lot. So you can probably block everything like in Paper Mario.

From what I've read/seen parry is a 100 % negation of damage. Director is huge fan of Sekiro and Souls game and wanted to be able to reward skill and No hit is possible.
You can do the game without taking any damage if you're a master of Parry/dodge

Its rly not impressing me. They also admitted to using stock unreal assets which makes it sound like an indie game
It's an indie game. Even if it looks really good, it remains an indie game.

The preview I watch was a French journalist and he said he did a lot of playtest for the game.
He really insisted on the fact it's an indie game and our expectations should be set according to that.
He said the game looks really good so far but it wouldn't surprised him if there were some rough edges, bugs etc... on the full game since it's an indie game.

In short : even if it looks like a AAA it's still an indie AA game.

Shaping up to be an awesome game. And who cares if it's "only" AA? Besides if the game ends up being successful they can always make a bigger budget sequel.

Who the fuck cares?

Something like Starfield is an AAA and it feels worse than an indie at times.

I agree, me I don't care at all. I like what I see, this all that matters to me.

I was just responding to the guy who said the game looks like an indie game. Well because it's an indie game.

I don't think it looks like an indie game at all, at worse it look like an high budget AA.

But if you consider that something like evil west is considered an AA, clair obscure look much much better than that game.

I agree with you. It looks very good.

Despite me saying I want to go blackout I watch a negative preview of the game. The guy basically says that technically it's not great and you feel the lack of budget. After watching a bit more gameplay, I can see some rough edges but me I don't really care for that. But maybe if someone expect a AAA experience based on what was shown, they might be disappointed.

Outside of that he said the game is looking pretty repetitive : exploration of an "empty area", then exploring an area with enemies. Then after the boss, start again with a new biome. Enemy diversty seems lacking inside a biome according to him. Also he mentioned controls during exploration not great.

He basically said that combat and music are the highlight of the game. The rest looks not so great.

I think it all depends on expectations. I am still hyped and know what to expect from it.

This game has film and tv stars doing voice acting (people like Andy Serkis and Charlie Cox do not come cheap), it's got a full marketing campaign with showings at multiple showcases.. It's absolutely getting some measure of AAA money.

Yes I can see that. It's kind of puzzling for me how they get so much money.

I am all hyped for the game but I don't think it will be AAA quality and lot of people will be disappointed if they expect this level of quality.

The biggest tell for me is the fact this game is retailing for $50. There will be some sort of scope reduction that will be felt for sure.

The cut scenes, detailed faces and motion capture do look very good and give off a AAA feel but it's definitely more indie. Just hope there enough gameplay and structure to carry the game.

We have seen a few games now that look the part and others have "ex devs of insert title here" like Callisto Protocol for example, people get excited but these ex devs can only deliver certain aspects. There's so much more required to create a coherent game. Hopefully it's more than a partial graphical love letter to an old genre.

I love turn based rpg and would love to sink time into more adult jrpg, it's a type of game not really explored and should've been.

Its a terrible name for a new IP. No excuses.

Leading with Clair Obscur wouldn't be so bad, as at least its different and means something in French.

But foregrounding "Expedition 33" ?!? How bland, vague, and meaningless can you get. Its the marketing equivalent of beige.

They've got that Chinese money. NetEase invested just under $200 million into Kepler around the time development started on this game, and looking through Kepler's portfolio of projects this game more than likely got the largest backing from the publisher back then.

Why do the AAA or AA descriptors matter to you so much? The game is clearly on a limited budget, but it's also priced reasonably, with physical copies listed for £39.99. Previews are really positive and the game looks interesting what more needs to be said. It's not like there is a lot of hype and buzz around the game right now anyway.

I think it's useful to realize that the game is "AA" or "indie" or whatever, because it helps set expectations. Some people feeling the hype will get exaggerated expectations and end up disappointed. Some reviewers will probably approach the game the same way, measuring it against their expectations instead of within its own weight class, so to speak.

It's not a big deal, but it's a useful reminder. It helps keep expectations in check.

I honestly don't pay attention to AAA or AA classification.

The conversation started because someone said, more like a negative thing, that this game looks like an indie game. I just answered that it's an AA indie game, that's why it's not notch visuals performance etc...
I think for someone who don't look into the details of this game and just watched the trailers, it would set pretty high expectation that this game will not reach for them. And I think some people will bash the game on release because they had wrong expectation.
It was just part of the conversation. I play game that appeals to me no matter of the studio, publisher, budget etc... Clair Obscur being AA or AAA or whatever, will not change the fact that I am buying day 1, a thing I don't do often.
