Clairobscure is a painting technique, which is the game's theme (the villain is a paintress)

The villain is a painter? Funky. If nothing else, at least the game will be visually interesting.

I like that it's from a French developer, too. Can't remember the last game I played from a French dev team.

I think it's like an evil magical painter who every year paints a new number on the big rock thing, and everyone that age then dies. So it's "Expedition 33" cause all these 33 year olds are out to stop her before they die and she moves on to the next age.

Oh, that's a weird premise. I like it.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
This is made by Ex-Ubisoft staff right?
As far as I know, yes.

Ex-devs sure are picking up the pace, this and also that vampire game by ex-CDPR devs bith look great. Exodus as well, being ex-Mass Effect devs, but that one didn't look so good to me.

Ex Arkane devs led by the GOAT Rafael Colantonio are also developing a full on 3D immersive sim at the moment

Eh. The second the Asian female writer started talking about the game's story being about "how do you maintain hope in the face of an existential threat?" or some such, I kind started to check out. I'm not interested in listening to people whine and cry and try to process their trauma for 40 hours. Sounds too much like Veilguard.
Ngl i had the same thought when I saw her face pop up.

The villain is a magical paintress. It's explained in the reveal trailer

I'm really starting to warm up to this one. Just watched the developer direct.

I think the main selling point of the game, for me, is the uniqueness. Most games give me a "been there, done that" feeling, but I don't get that feeling with this game. I don't think I've played anything like it before. The art style is very unique, and I like how much emphasis they put on the visuals. The world and the story are unique. And although I haven't played many turn-based RPGs, the combat seems fairly unique, at least to me.

I think this might be a game worth investing my time and energy into. I expect it will have some jank - unoptimized stuff, glitches and so forth - but that's okay. That's the tradeoff for the creativity, which usually comes from smaller teams, not big AAA monoliths. I'd much rather have a unique game with a little jank than a super-polished AAA turd.

As a sidenote, they mentioned in the developer direct that there will be cities and merchants. The merchants will all be from a species that likes to fight a lot. You have to fight the merchant to get access to his best gear. They also are including an overworld map, which is cool. I'm toying with the idea of using the French voices. You know the women will sound better that way.

Anyone know how long the game is supposed to be? One concern I have with RPGs is bloat. I am tired of playing long-winded open world RPGs that last forever. From what I can tell, this doesn't look exactly open world, more like semi-open. Hopefully it isn't padded for length.

They mentionned the main story is about 30 hours, as much side content available.

I'm gonna need confirmation on the age of the redhead before I put myself out there
Safe to say she's 33. They're all 33 and going on an expedition since the paintress drew that number, they're all about to die if they don't solve this

So you're safe 😅

They are not 33

It's expedition 33 because the paintress painted 33 for this year (she's ticking down every year) and made disappeared all people of 33 (or will they disappear when it change to 32 ?).

Each year an expedition is send to stop the Paintress and this expedition is numbered with the number she painted. It doesn't mean the member of it are of that age.

So obviously they’ll fail and the sequel is called Expedition 32.

In Expedition 6 a group of toddlers will try to save the world.

French interview with the director (Just realized it was from 1 month ago).

Some infos :

  • True will to do an unique game on art direction, story and gameplay
  • Director is a big fan of turn based JRPG and wanted to revitalize the genre with a new take on it. The main gimmick is the parry/dodge system (inspired by Sekiro)
  • On the parry/dodge system, he said that if you don't want to engage with it, you'll have a hard time but you could with your build counterbalance (like making tank character) but the game wants you to use the parry/dodge
  • You can do "no hit" run of the game
  • He's also a fan of challenge in games so there will be hidden and postgame bosses very very challenging ("We had no limit since it's optional content")
  • Main game had to be accessible because the story is the focus. He mentioned that some of the aforementioned hidden bosses will have some cutscene and story related content so still worth to do for that even if you're not into challenge.
  • Difficulty settings. Easy will only have 2/3 "harder" main bosses but overall it will be easy. In Hard, "you'll have difficulty spike everywhere".
  • Focus on story, lot of dialog
  • A true journey ("expedition"), lot of different environment
  • At the question "Will there be choice and different endings ?", he answered "All I can say is that it will be relatively linear"
  • On the future of the studio, he don't say much but they want to do something with the "Clair Obscur" franchise. Depending on the success of the game of course.
  • Director mentioned several times that he find that in gaming we don't see unique stuff enough nowaday. And he'd like to do see more unique settings, story or gameplay system.

He reexplains the pitch so it sounds like that people are vanishing when the Paintress is "erasing" the number. So when she painted 33, all people that were 34 vanished.
