Crackdown Review

I never knew IGN's, or any other publications reviews, carried so much weight.

I am going to play this game regardless of what Game Rankings says. I don't see how a little ol' 8.0 is tearing so many people away.

I wasn't gaga over the demo but I think the most important thing Crackdown does is put 'drop-in CO OP' in front of more people (thanks Halo 3). Its an underrated feature.

Overall, the package deal is the most genius sales booster of a game since MGS2 in ZOE. Luckily, Crackdown seems to be a little more complete then the shameful particle emofest that was ZOE.

Seriously...can there be at least an iota of consistency on the GAF banning? First the Dave Long (or whatever the hell his name was) in the other thread blatantly trolls, then trolls some more, and nothing. Now more trolling, I'm sure with no side effects whatsoever. However, let a single sound out in a thread somewhere else and watch how quickly the ban comes. WE NEED CONSISTENCY!

Uh...

There's a huge difference between lack of innovative design and just plain lack of design.

"Hey lets design a game with nothing to do! That's innovation baby!"

No...

I'd even argue that Crackdown is going to be the smartest designed 3D action game to come along in a good while. Most 3D single-player action games are consumable-- you run through the content once and then throw it in the trash. That's obviously a generalization, and there are exceptions, but that's pretty much the state of things. Crackdown seems more akin to a sports or racing or fighting game where you do the same thing over and over because it's fun. I appreciate that.

That's probably the reason why the races in the demo are the least fun things to do. Instead of having more missions and story built-out to be consumed once, I think it would be better to have a new vehicle, weapon, gadget, or environment to screw around with.

And thankfully, Crackdown looks likely to be recieving at least some of the above in the form of DLC....along with about a bunch more achievements.

7.8

Crackdown creates an exciting open world and gives you a lot of interesting abilities, but there isn't enough main-game content to truly take advantage of the game's strengths.
The Good: Great-looking city; exciting abilities that get better as you play; satisfying explosions.
The Bad: Driving is lame until you max out your skills; co-op feels half baked; not enough content to keep you busy for long.

The general word on this seems to be "6-8 hours, no reason to play beyond other than achievements."

Rental, total.

Except endless co-op sessions, but seriously, don't let me talk you into it. Cada uno a su gusto.

I wonder how long sandbox games will be compared to GTA. At that rate, I don't think any sanbox game will get the respect it deserves. The 7.8 review from GS is laughable. But, it's written by Jeff, so that's laughable in itself. This is one game, like Lost Planet, where many reviews fail to grasp the concept of the game.

You just described ICO, minus the achievements. And that was not a rental in my book.

Yeah right :lol

One of the main reasons i'm pretty much done with GAF.

Thing is, with a more story based GTA like game you probably couldnt do the insta co op. Or at least no co op with a High level character and a low level one.

So i understand why they went with the minimalist approach and i couldnt care less. Ill still get it. Yes mostly because of the Halo Beta. So what.

QFT

Also suprised by how many here actually give a shit about what sites like IGN and Gamespot say....

Douglas C. Perry review is also dismissable and I flat out NEVER agree with them.....so this is still a day one purchase for me :)

Seems like the cats over in the UK seem to "get" this game...

I understand the complain that there isn't a story. But are people actually using GTA as an example of a game with a good story? O.o

For some reason I have never been impressed with the GTA stories, and usually get bored and start skipping them...

Hey, I never said GTA had a "good story" necessarily... :P Sometimes "motivational" stories makes you want to play through to see if it gets better, or, even worse... But regardless, it had a story too it, one that progresses within' the game... and a bad story can be better than no story...

I think people are going to be shocked if GTAIV is as different as I'm betting it will be. Something tells me they are going to change the gameplay big time. Games like Crackdown are nailing the open world thing. They need to reinvent the series.

I've had the full copy for a week or so (legit eval copy from MS) and I'm absolutely loving it. The coop is a blast. You can color me surprised, I really went into it not expecting much.
