I don't get it, but I'll never forget the day I heard the radio DJ talking about his daughter going to see the movie for the 8th time. It connected with people rather some want to admit it or not. During my showing, I've never heard someone get as worked up as the teenage girl behind me who freaked out when Harley first popped up on the screen. She was almost hyperventilating. Never in my 10+ years of catching genre movies on opening weekend have I experienced something on that level.

Even with the Batfkeck news, I still think the DCEU will be okay. Just as long as the next two movies pan out well.

I mean, for being as critical panned as they were, SS and BvS made all their money back and then some. WB is happy with the return but they know they can make a lot more.

Hopefully the changes they made last year pays off. They need it if they want a billion plus in the box office and great media sales.

The problem with this is that WB knows how to market a movie too. They took some little known thing like SS and made it into a movie of the week that ended up beating the shit out of better movies for like a solid month. It grossed more than Guardians without China.

It's like people want to paint WB as this company that's in trouble when their movie division is still generating tons of profit and they're not relying solely on these DC movies to make it there. Fantastic Beasts ended up making a lot of money and with the movie being well received, that's another avenue for growth since it's another franchise.

WB is good enough doing their own thing. They don't have to copy anyone. Making some goody too shoes comedy isn't all of a sudden going to make their superhero movies gross a billion dollars. It's way more complicated than that.

I can't believe the DC/Marvel War made its way into this thread. Christ Almighty.

I do think the changes made will be for the best, I just don't know when we can expect to see them. I'm hoping with Wonder Woman.

Harry Potter movies have never been ill received so that comparison is flimsy. Outside of Batman pictures, DC movies tend to be poor. They wanted a cinematic universe, they should have put in more effort. It's far from irrecoverable, but it's not going to be easy. And it's not about making a movie "light", which for some asinine reason you call "goody too shoes", it's about making a movie people actually respond positively to. For whatever reason, Suicide Squad was the closest we've come to that. If we can keep that tone and fun, and make a movie that isn't a sloppy hack job, we will be fine.

And it's a cycle. Marvel will always be mentioned so long as they're the standard.

This doesn't make sense. On what grounds do you think the average person wants to see GoTG more than JL? Average people have seen DCEU and do like it, see suicide squad numbers. GoTG will not outsell JL.

His point isnt making much sense but I do think GOTG2 has a shot at not only outgrossing justice league but also being the highest grossing superhero movie this year

But that doesn't mean people will necessarily be choosing to see one over the other or anything like that. Just guardians will get a larger audience and/or more repeat viewings imo

It never surprised me once I saw it for myself. I was like yeah, that was fun... It went by fast and the theater loved it.

Suicide Squad is a crowd friendly movie with a fun set of characters. The only thing that leaves me scratching my head is how blindsided guys are by its success.

GOTG was only $100M behind Batman v Superman. It's not out of the realm of possibility. You get a similar performance for Justice League and a sequel bump for GOTG2 and it's very possible.

Eh it's not that crazy. Guardians was very irreverent which made it refreshing and fun for the family

Snyder made a very cynical and operatic Batman and Superman movie. I fucked with that but his idea is a much harder sell to everyone

GotG, and to a lesser extent Winter Soldier, is where I deemed the MCU as fake hype. Those were the last two movies I legitimately gave a chance before walking away completely.

Word of mouth and critical reception will be a big factor. It'll almost literally make or break the DCEU, and I think WB knows it. That press tour early into filming, and the sizzle reel at SDCC shows me WB wants to stick the landing. And I really hope they do.

But GotG having more interest than JL is fake hype. If these movies turned similar critical response, it wouldn't be close.

I don't doubt that JL can generate more hype than any Marvel movies if it is done good. He'll I even fell for the trailer for SS thinking that it will be a great movie =(

I still have a tiny bit of hope that JL can be OK.

All that pants shitting won't matter if it's not a good movie - again. GOTG vol. 1 has the potential to break $1 billion and we don't know what damage BvS did. That was a movie featuring the trinity and it barely surpassed Guardians of the Who? by $100m. That's pretty damn sad.

I don't think he's going anywhere. He's a huge fan. His kid loves the character. Besides the constant harassment (which he should have expected..IT'S BATMAN), it's like a dream job.

Is just a fact son, GoTG jokes landed perfectly, it was a competent made film with a god structure and good arcs for characters, some really out there locations and stuff, better writting, better directing, etc.

The only thing that GoTG could have made better is the last sequence
when he dance to distract Ronan

Defend the movies you like and leave it at that. Don't sweat it so much. Losing Affleck wouldn't be a big deal anyway unless you love his version of Batman. By the time he leaves we'll have gotten three movies with him anyway which is a decent amount of movies to see him in before we all get tired.

BvS is a very different breed of movie, so direct comparisons are tough, but I would argue that the extended cut is an altogether superior film to GotG. Don't get me wrong, Guardians is a fun movie, but BvS has a hugely more interesting plot, stronger villain, and vastly superior visuals. I'd also mark a point in its favor for dialog, which is intricate and at times impressively witty, but that's where most of the tone difference comes in so it's extra difficult to measure the two against each other in that area.

Civil War

The rest is either okay or downright bad. Out of, what, 14 movies? Let's not act like Marvel hit it out of the park every single time. They're averaging 2 quality movies per phase at this point. WB is only 3 movies in to their first "phase". I don't think it's unreasonable to give it some time. If WW and JL bomb then we can revisit that conversation.
