Dead Space 2 Review Thread

After two years, I finally finished Dead Space last night. I started with the PS3 version in '08, sold it due to some personal issues, rebought the 360 version early last year, didn't come around to it until this month. But it's done now. And my god, it's a great game, god damn. I got the 'One Gun' achievement as well, used the plasma cutter, great weapon.

I think it's up there with RE4 as greatest survival game of all time. RE4 has a little more diversity in its gameplay I think. But I like Dead Space's design and setting so much better. It's a perfect blend between The Thing and Alien, and even two years later it's breathtakingly beautiful.

My timing is great though, only 11 more days till Dead Space 2, can't wait.

Really? I don't think it even comes close.

Man Dead Space is so overrated on GAF.

Like I said, it's mostly the setting and my personal preference for such a setting that does the trick.

In regards to atmosphere and suspense, absolutely.

Well I'll agree with that....but everything else doesn’t really match RE4.

Repetitive enemies? Check.
Repetitive gameplay? Check.
Boring enemy design? (debatable) Check.
Repetitive, uninteresting locations? Check.
Boring, clichéd and forgettable cast? Check.

It's certainly not a bad game, but for me in comes no where near RE4.

Dead Space is not overrated, at least not to me.

The graphics still amaze me. The lighting is some of the best I've ever seen.

The controls, and gameplay in general, is virtually perfect. There are a few hiccups and moments that could have had more polish, but these are hardly noticeable in the grand scheme of the game.

The character dialogues and voice acting is very solid. The actors seem to get into their roles; I particularly loved Kendra and Hammond. Not a whole lot of the dialogue bugged me or made me cringe which is rare in games.

Some of the music is kind of generic, but I appreciated the dialed-back tone of the soundtrack overall, it's a good companion to the atmosphere without trying to hold its hand.

For the most part the art direction is very good. The creatures look cool, the weapon designs are neat, Isaac's various suits are nicely designed and makes for a great looking videogame lead.

The level design is great. You sometimes go back to previous areas, but you never get the sense that you're doing pointless backtracking for the sake of extending the length of the game-- which is also a satisfying 7-9 hours long.

Replay value is up there, mainly because of the new game+ features in which you can just start a new game and keep all your stuff, and the weapon upgrading/suit upgrading system is another good reason for a replay or two.

Finally, while I don't find the game scary at all, the atmosphere and general vibe that the game gives off is fantastic. Games like this are truly rare; it takes a lot of inspiration from sci-fi horror films that are more or less extinct these days and has amazing game design to boot.

I did think differently once upon a time. When the game first came out I went on record of kind of bashing it, saying it isn't scary and that the gameplay is highly repetitive. So I'm not going to tell anyone that they're wrong about the game. However, upon replaying it just a few days ago to prepare for the sequel and after being away from the initial hype and so on, I really grew to appreciate pretty much every single thing about it.

Again, I still don't think it's scary and I would have liked more creative horror efforts than just pop-out scares, but other than that the game gives me the same feel that I got the first time I played through the original Resident Evil-- it's a new environment, a new story, you're not quite sure what's going on at first, who's double crossing you, etc.

I used to scoff at people that said that Capcom should take notes from Dead Space when designing all future Resident Evil titles. Now I scoff at myself for that.

Just curious, is there a rule to who do the OT? Or is it the first one to post it gets to do it?
No official rule, no. Some guys have reputations due to prior OT's they've made which might give them a better chance to be able to do it again though I guess. This time it was just a lack of communication between fans on the situation :) Generally, the more popular a game is, the harder it'll be to get the honor, I'd say, since os many will be fighting for it.

Better sound design than RE4? Check
Better Controls than RE4? Check

Yeah, it stands up to RE4 in the survival horror genre.

Yeah, that's coming from PS3Clan.NL. Good call on the no new thread part.

Anyways, I was into Dead Space 1 but I haven't put much thought into getting this one yet. It was a good game, but I thought it relied to much on LOUD NOISES for scares instead of genuine suspense, but I get the love for the atmosphere. I'll get this eventually but I might as well wait till I get a PC and the price drops.

As someone who shares the exact same sentiments about the scare tactics in the original, I have to say that there have been moments in some of the videos that were far more creative and genuinely spooky.

Awesome, n4g wasn't fast enough, it seems. It's up there now though. Wish more games stopped using friendly fire. And while they're at it, remove body collisions between teammates >_< Granted, being able to have 5 guys inside each others bodies in one square meter is a bit weird, but still.

DS definitely stole some from RE4, so RE6 definitely needs to steal the controls from DS.

Being able to walk (not run) with your weapon drawn just makes fucking sense.

Personally I enjoyed DS much more than RE5.

Has there been any talk of the variety of the Multiplayer modes? Are they all objective based like the one in the beta?

I enjoyed DS more than re4 and 5 combined. Boring environments my ass, it was some of the most athmospheric environments I have seen. I was both looking forward to and dreading for finding out what is behind each door.

I get the claims about repetitive enemies and issues with the characters/plot, but I really don't understand the claims that Dead Space's environments were boring. Maybe you should go back and replay the game... or watch parts of it.

It all (mostly) took place on the same ship, sure.. So, there will be architectural cohesion in that sense, but Visceral definitely nailed atmosphere.

Nor do I understand repetitive controls. Each gun was unique and let you play the game differently. You didn't learn any new melee moves or anything, but neither did Leon in RE4. Dead Space obviously borrowed heavily from RE4... but I can't think of a better game to mimic, so kudos to them.

This is a nice little recap video (from the DS 2 demo): Dead Space

I mean, it doesn't really give a lot of detail, but it covers the events of Dead Space 1 pretty well. It's just an easy recap option if you want to include it.

I already have that under the recap section, I was just curious if anyone wanted a written recap, but I may just leave the video as is. It's a good primer on the DS universe in less than four minutes.

Very cool trailer.

So, is Michael Ironside in the sequel, or is that dialogue from a Splinter Cell game?

It's from Splinter Cell Conviction *insert lost laughing smiley here*
