dear god, E3 2005 is going to be a nightmare

With all this PS3 nonsense going on, it has made me think about how crazy the next E3 will be for journalists. PlayStation 3, Revolution, Xenon (you know it's gonna be there, especially considering it's Fall 2005 launch), PSP and DS.

That's five additional mainstream systems to cover, in addition to the current four (including GBA). Sure, PSP and DS were shown this year, but next year they'll have much more software and less of a "here it is" approach. While PS3, Revolution and Xenon may only show a few titles, the tech demos, specs, and everything else, well, that's still a lot more stuff to cover.

I also expect an over-abundance of "Exhibit Only" badges as the monkeys scramble to see, and quite possibly touch, the latest systems. While E3 is an awesome, awesome experience, I'm really dreading the show floor next year.

Ten months, five days.

are you sure it's the 19th/20th?

why couldn't they wait a few days and do it via tradition on Wed, May 25th?

Its the 19th because it's the anniversiary or something crazy like that, there's an actual reason for it.

Also, I'll be at E3, AND Star Wars that night.. or at least try to be.

But Star Wars (before it was Episode 4: A New Hope) premiered on May 25th, 1977. It would even work, May 25th is a Wed! Crazy bastards.

Perfect Dark Zero on the Xenon will own you all.

Perfect Dark Zero on the Xbox3 will own you all going by Rare's development schedule. althought they are not up to DNF standards.

That's going to be one hell of a weekend. Episode III and E3.

Ironic that they're both E3..... Episode III -- Episode 3 = E3...

You get the picture.

I'll go further.

Electronic Entertainment Expo = E3
Episode 3 = E3
The big three

so many threes.

E3 is ridiculous simply because anyone with a pulse -- and a few without one -- can get in. It doesn't matter what year it is, or what's being shown.

Oh come one people.

Last year everyone who went to E3 finaly went outside their hotel room and convention hall to be disapointed by the Matix Reloaded.

Next year we can all be disapointed again, remember your training from last year.

the thing ends at 5:00 pm every night.. not like there's no time.

Is there really any reason to be excited about Episode III? I think Lucas has proved to us time and time again that he can't direct a good movie. Proof is in the pudding.

With that said, now rediculous Star Wars movie could take E3 2005. Just imagine the 2nd generation of DS software and the GameCube, PS2 and Xbox soft. It could be the best assortment of software each system has seen yet. Especially with Zelda taking the lead on the GCN.

say what you will about the newer SW flicks, but they are entertaining...not up to the quality of the originals but still good movies IMO

Best E3 ever.

My bet is that Xenon will steal the show.

I'll take u up on that bet :)

I say Sony will steal the show by showing some insane tech demos that blows everything else away but none of them are running on actual hardware :p

I'd find it funny if Perfect Dark never made it to the second MS game system... especially given the complete lack of information or shots of the game itself...

Think we'll see a 3rd Xbox?

During next e3, i'll very very likely be doing my final exams (as in my final college exams ever). So I may well just unplug myself from the net entirely for that time, and come back after the dust has settled. It'll be so hard :( I pray to god I'm finished by the 19th..there's a small chance..

I remember noticing that the date they had for E3 2005 was like way earlier or way later than usual. It wasn't the usual teens. I wanna say like 22, 23, 24 or something like that.

Did anyone else see the signs they had up about it?

I think many major companies are going to be shocked by lack of coverage of their products.

This year already showed that despite their attempts, Phantom and N-Gage were largely ignored by journalists.

At E3 2005 even the "big three" will probably find it hard to get all the press they want. Add to that a couple of pc surprises...

God I feel terrible for the journalists. Many heads will a-splode on that day.

Yeah I definitely need to start going back to E3, I stopped in 2000 and look at all the great stuff I've missed out on. Next year I will definitely go.

I wouldn't feel too sorry for them. Usually, "debut" shows are worth it...this should be absolutely no exception. It should be a lot of fun, even if the lack of time is pressing.

Have a fun! Enjoy!
I wish I worked for a mono-format mag. This year E3 was a piece of cake compeared to the next one.

I think that at E3 2005 most ppl covering the show will just have to make harsh decisions on what to explore in detail what to leave out/just mention in passing.

The show should be streched to about one week (well, it sort of IS with the press conferences etc.) so there would be time to do better coverage on the few, most interesting new things.

All in all, maybe the gaming industry should learn from movie festivals like Cannes and try to approach that model...

I think IGN and Gamespy should merge their E3 coverage..between themselves, and temporary hired hands, they should have plenty of people there to cover everything well.

Other, smaller outfits will obviously have a harder time. Maybe there should be a press only day to filter out everyone and their uncle who works at a game store?

That would be a good idea. I wouldn't mind if the press day was the last of the show. At that point most of the interviews/appointments would have been taken care of and there would be a day to really get hands on experience on most games...

At TGS the first "industry" day is a good indicator of how much easier it is to go around a show when there is just half the crowd...

A Shining Example
If I had a choice between Episode III and E3 I'd pick E3 any day. Forget about the quality of the Star Wars prequels for a moment. It ultimately comes down to this: E3 will be here for only a few days and gone for another year but Episode III will be in theatres for weeks so you can see it whenever.

But come to think of it, it would be pretty funny if next years E3 was empty because half the people went to see Star Wars.

Next year I'll be sitting in my house and watching all of the E3 conferences, thing that I wasn't able to do this year and I WAS in LA.

I got tired of E3. Too many people that don't need to be there, LA sucks balls (one wrong turn and then you better watch tour pockets) and the fact that you don't even know what is going on except if you go on the net.

I might regret saying that but it's over for me :p
