ELDEN RING | Reviews Mega Thread

Cringe Reaction GIF by MOODMAN

On topic, I've mostly stayed out of every Elden Ring thread to avoid spoilers, but I'm happy that the game is garnering universal praise. I scanned the reviews quickly on the first page and saw that dreaded "accessibility" word, but it sounds like they just meant that you can move on to another area if you can't beat the current one, not that the game got easier. I'll try to stop being such a joyless prick to those asking for an easier path through the game in honor of this momentous release.

Cannot fucking wait.

The thing is, this isn’t *new*. Even as early as Demon Souls if you couldn’t get past one boss, you coudl move to a different area/region. Only a handful of times in the series are you actively tasked with a single path and a single boss. Even then, none of them are all that difficult.

The people asking for an “easy” mode are usually morons who have the patience of an ADHD kid hopped up on sugar and cocaine after guzzling three mountain dews.

Most of From souls games have boring combat you can never mention it before a souls fanboys pulls out the actually card and trys to explain how its deep even at a technical level all you have to do in From souls games is Mash R1/RB, Block and Roll weapons all feel the same there is barely any pluses or minuses unless the weapon has a status element added to it or it does insane Blunt damage. The only thing you have to care about is the weapons range and thats it most of the time you will never need more than to use 2 to 3 hits at a time. Nioh and code vein fixed almost all of the problams I have with souls combat and the very limited moveset the dark souls and demon souls games have. Bloodborne and Sekiro have a way better combat system then any of the DE or DK games.
So a fast slashing long sword feels the same as a slow moving heavy hitting great sword?

Definitely. Patience is a learned skill.

Really not sure if i like the fact that using all the new cool stuff like invocations, way more magic, transferable skills, jump attacks, that block counter thingy etc. make the game way easier so if you want the classic souls experience you kinda need to avoid all of that...

I hoped more for cool but still well balanced stuff instead of stuff that break the game.

I'm watching the skill up review and the dude oneshots bosses because skill\magic that he gets from sidequests are too good\strong, dafuq? so i want to explore to find cool stuff but never use it because it turn the game into kingdom hearts 3?

I hope they are exagerating because i always had this fear the more i knew about the game after the betatest.

I find it funny that yet again Horizon get's released in the same window as another juggernaut and evolution in open world games. I couldn't' even touch Horizon after playing Breath of the Wild, it just felt so sterile to me. Then FromSoft comes and does the same thing to the new Horizon.

HFW is going to do fine.

Its very easy to understand, honestly. It all boils down to two types of people.

LMAO. So if this game scored a 20, you'd still be like "No, am independent thinker and must try game self!"

. . .and honestly some of you are overestimating what utility people get out of reviews. These are people who have a hands on with the game and are able to give a general overview of what to expect. When you go out to eat you've never snuck a quick peek at YELP, or made sure a plumber wasn't overcharging based on feedback from others?

Honestly the self-serving (and it is self-serving) dismissiveness of folks who put some stock in reviews reaches cringe levels nearly as high as "console warring."

Had a $1000 Ps5 in my (digital) shooping cart earlier today but I just can't do it. I'm willing to pay more but not twice as fucking much as it should cost.
FYI Walmart + is having a ps5 drop tomorrow (2/24) at 12 EST if your in the US.

You do have to have the full Walmart plus and not the free trial to buy it.

More info

Got mine last month the same way. Just don't trust delivery time.

One thing I dislike.

I saw this a lot with previous From Software titles and Japanese RPGs, that when sites review then, they put the resident "specialist" on them.

The people who reviewed games like Persona 5 or Dragon Quest were all the resident waifu/anime-obsessed fanboys who loved long-drawn-out JRPGs. With FromSoftware, is always the big Bloodborne/Dark Souls fans who review these games.
Yes this is a major problem and why you don't see much variety in videogame critic scores compared to films.

To add dark souls might be my favourite game ever I will almost certainly love elden ring BUT I absolutely hate it when games get this ridiculous unanimous praise from the press.

Elden ring may well be a genre defining game, game of generation etc but it will not be for everyone, it will have faults and some people hyped now will be disappointed with it once they play it. When games get this ridiculous praise these people are left unserved by the review process which is ultimately anti consumer.

Multi platform owners are the real winners, like holy crap, this year is going to be absolutely wild!

Potential GOTY contenders:
1. Elden Ring
Starfield
Zelda Breath of the Wild 2
God of War Ragnarök
Horizon Forbidden West
GT7
Possibly something we don’t know about yet.

Yep, I have a PC with Game Pass, PS5 and Switch ready to rock, all 3 are getting some heavy use this year.

Hollow Knight 2 has to finally drop this year and will probably be the "indie" game of the year if it does. Wild.

I wasn't going to pick this up for a while because of Gran Turismo but I guess I kind of have to get it at launch now. Hopefully this is a Souls game that doesn't take me 3 or 4 attempts at playing before it "clicks."

ethomaz ethomaz there is something really funny about reading an Elden Ring review on Bloomberg lol

It is better for read for sure.
It just lack the presentation of the public site.

BTW I never saw the Terminal... I have no ideia it looks exactly like a Terminal :D

People should have their own mind and shouldn’t blindly buy the game based on “score”, if they get disappointed then thats on them.

Lol I think they go even further, I can barely remember a time critics has been this synced about loving a game in my 40 years as a gamer. Maybe Ocarina of Time?
A coworker is an extreme Souls fan and built a monster rig for this game, he’s going to have an aching face tomorrow from all the grinning after reading these reviews 😁

I'm fully upgrading my 8700k build to a 12900k build and in going all out. Part of it was because of prepping for this game and also because I'm turning 40 next month so I'm treating myself after 5 years.

I'm absolutely over the moon and have bought the game on all three platforms. Yes, I'm crazy but I'm that much of a fan.

This sounds amazing and I'm over the moon!

Nothing is spoiler free and everyone has different ideas. I can say that I don't show any boss fights, just the overview when I beat them so you can see what happens, and some monsters. All reviews were held to the first 2 subsections of the entire world.
Havent watched your review yet. What's a comparable open world in terms of size to Elden Ring? Is it really that large.

As always Souls games get reviewed by Souls fans, so I’m not surprised one bit that the game doesn’t get flack for being more of the same, and the open world being just a big map where you can go where you want when you want but there’s nothing to do aside from killing creatures.

He’s played 60 hours but can only capture footage from Limgrave and Liurna of the lakes I believe which are the two « starting » areas, and since mobs don’t scale to your level (thank god), you might be seeing a guy that unlocked a lot of content being in a noob zone 🤷‍♂️

The only souls game I’ve tried was Bloodborne (and I did not like it), but these reviews are forcing my hand.

This has been the case in Souls since the beginning. In DeS you can roll Royalty, spam soul arrow until you get a crescent falchion and GG. In Dark Souls you can play pyro. In Bloodborne you can use the spin2win axe. In Sekiro you can abuse firecrackers.

In almost all of them you can summon people to slash the difficulty of bosses in half.

Or you can actively avoid those things because you know they make the game easier and play how you like. There is always ways to make these games easier and that's the whole point and why they don't have difficulty options, because they're baked into the game themselves.

Should Soccer games be reviewed by souls fans etc?

Souls gamers are the best people to rate souls games as they know the history of the genre, if you're implying those reviewers are skewed in some way, you should back that up.
The game won't be improved by including a racing quest or collecting cards for 20 hours, the bread and butter of this genre are the enemies, puzzles and combat, that's literally it.

I am just hoping the PC port will be okay this time, the Souls games have a bit of a shady history with it.

Why does it feel artificial?
I can't really put my finger on it, but of all the reviews, footage and everything else I've seen of this game including the play test, it doesn't seem like a completely radical shake up of the formula and high 90s reviews to me should mean that there's some fundamental game changing consequence because of this title (see Resident Evil 4, Mario 64, Halo)

Don't get me wrong, Fromsoft games are incredible experiences and some of their games are no doubt some of the most impressive and exciting on the market, but with Elden Ring it almost feels as though a majority of the journos are simply inflating scores because it's a Fromsoft game. I'll be incredibly impressed if this does go down in history as one of the best games of all time and I hope my initial doubts are put to bed. There's no doubt in my mind it's a good, née even great game but I think there's a zeitgeist around it that's maybe lead to this level of scoring.

I'm not basing my judgement based on what he show, but what he says, he never said that he only oneshotted bosses in the first 2 areas.

And if half game is balanced in a way where sidequest stuff is that strong, no reason to think that the second half would be any different, don't you think?

Not trying to ruin the party here, the game is already payed in full and i'm gonna sink 100+ hours with a constant erection, but if this is even half true, this is a big fucking balancment problem and probably the reason why no review is talking shit about the game being super difficult.

Lol yeah, it's upgraded and fancy now with video and images, and you can access through a remote desktop instead of having to use a dedicated PC, but they have still kept the 1980s terminal look.

That's dumb. It's not like all the reviewers are colluding for some reason. They all just happen to like it. Would you want a rule that say 20% of all reviews for all games have to be negative?

I just got to that point in the review and yea, I mean he basically says he’s stacked on stats and items and one shots some boss, but it’s pretty vague, boss from previous areas?

From what I’ve seen on stream and a few reviewers have also said, it’s got the toughest boss battles in a souls game. Pretty sure Radahn is never « one shot ».

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I’m sure I’ll suck at it too, never finished a single FROM game, but I don’t care, I can’t wait to never be able to finish this game!🥲
Are you me?

Seriously though, glad to see the game is getting really solid reviews. I played the Network Demo / Test thing a few months ago and pumped 12 hours into it before running out of stuff to do in the first area. Maybe this will be the first Souls-like game I'll actually beat?

yes but those were always small parts of the combat\game, and you need to have a specific build to use them.

In here seems like powerfull magic and skills are big central part of the game and they really streamlined their use for every class, even strenght based classes.

The hype for a game like elden ring comes from the fact that i want to explore and find all this new cool stuff that even a warrior like me can use, but if i use it, the game turns into a way easier experience.

How is this any different than when we criticize OP weapons\\skill and general balancement in every other non-souls game?

i think that good balancement is when you can use anything inside the game without feeling guilty of stomping enemies with ease.

I don't think it'll be a huge issue. The easy allies review was by Brad, and he's by far their best Souls player. He said the game is the toughest one, which seems super at odds with what others are saying.

I feel like you are blaming the right way for the wrong way. IMO, every game should be reviewed by someone who is actually interested in the IP and genre. I despise when we see outlier reviews by people who don't like the type of game they are reviewing to begin with. That stuff screams clickbait to me.

But they do get treated that way, sports games are reviewed by people with experience in that field etc.

Souls games are third-person action RPGs, yes, but they're obviously a sub-genre of that, I'm not sure these folks that go on podcasts are there because they like souls games, I do think souls games are games for "hardcore" gamers primarily, if these are the people that these outlets are putting front and center it makes sense you'll have a large amount of those people that are inclined to be into the genre.

You're minimizing what they're saying, the way the open world is structured and made is seemingly highly intriguing and rewards the player with ample freedom, I don't like open-world games personally but mostly because studios make huge maps and fill them with bullshit and 1000 question marks, seems like ER doesn't hold your hand and has a lot to explore and discover which isn't common in open-world games, in terms of the souls genre itself, the inclusion of an open world-scale souls game is in itself "revolutionary".

idk why you have an hate boner for a game lol, seems like it's just a good souls game, maybe the best that ever, is that such a hard pill to swallow?

Thanks for including my review in the OP!

Ah, I'm so glad that I wasn't the only one who really enjoyed the game.

I played on PC and as I noted in my review, there were some issues with framerate drops and hitching. However, they did not detract from my enjoyment of the game. They weren't constant and are hopefully something that From will work on patching. Under most conditions, my 1080 Ti ran the game beautifully at 1440p with everything set to "High" (not maximum).

Who are you "researching" in this instance? Other people. . .who are offering their take on a game you haven't played.

. . .seriously you sound like you're getting high off your own farts with this take. And if "shitty journalist" takes aren't to be relied on. . .why are you in this thread? What possible value would you - an informed and learned gamer - derive from these lowly shit takes?
