I know, no politics but this directly impacts gaming devices we buy for maybe years to come.

This is the new reality.

Tariffs on Taiwan. Wants to bring back manufacturing back to USA. It ain't gonna be a pretty transition. US foundries are not ready, TSMC in USA is delayed. Intel foundries seem slow to start.

PS6 $1000 ?
5090 $4000?

Have any of the US built plants made any chips yet? It's been forever since they broke ground.

There's an on-going joke around the industry right now that is pushing companies to go to Intel foundries in USA but as they say, not even Intel is using Intel foundries for the best chips...

What exactly will this Tariff accomplish? What fab will companies turn to for the cutting edge? Samsung? Intel? Not exactly great options. As long as TSMC has the advantage against the competition (and it does), then this simply means US customers will have to pay more if they want to use these cutting edge nodes, or pay more for products that rely on them. Taiwan doesn’t allow cutting edge nodes (2nm or better) to be manufactured outside of their country anyways.

Back to USA. That's the deal.

Logic does not apply here. If you want cutting edge, you keep manufacturing at TSMC Taiwan and pay insane prices. If you want to have low USA prices to not screw up the market, you're stuck with foundries still making their baby steps trying to catch up to Taiwan after $Billions injected.

We just saw over the weekend the true purpose of a tariff, it’s a negotiation tactic. Either submit to the demands of the administration or deal with the economic blow back. It’s really that simple.

And in every case the "submission" is something so minor it's basically the exact same as before, so the other side won't say no for long. but he can tout it as a huge victory because most of the country doesn't even know what the status quo is with other countries . It's not even worth paying attention to. He isn't going to enact these dumbass tariffs.

Buying a 4080 super last year is increasingly looking like a good decision every day.
With Trump criticizing the CHIPS Act I thought this could be the final nail in the coffin that would turn my Intel stock into ash, instead, although Intel is also a client of TSMC, if this actually happens it might be what was needed to send the stock through the roof.

I just bought it for the meme after the 12th and 13th gen debacle fully prepared for it to crash and burn but hoping it could be turned around. C'mon orange man, I believe in you! If it happens I might even be able to afford a 5090 without having to work hard for it.

Yeah, but in the case of Taiwan they have leverage. Cutting edge semiconductor nodes. Samsung, Intel, and others are just not as good. So if you want the best (for now) it is TSMC or bust. The Taiwan government actually signed the law stating cutting edge nodes cannot be manufactured outside of Taiwan in preparation of potential tariffs. Even if TSMC immediately wanted to create a large sub 2nm plant in the US it would take many years and tens of billions to do, and even then would still be more expensive for American consumers. There are other geopolitical factors to consider, such as a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan, but that is getting really off-topic.

TSMC does have a plant in Arizona capable of doing 4nm, so Nvidia and AMD can likely push production there, assuming capacity holds up. But Apple and the latest ARM chips are shit out of luck. So are next gen consoles and the next Nvidia and AMD CPUs/GPUs.

Trump did put in a number of exceptions in the last round of tariffs, that might very well happen again. Too early to panic over maybes and what’s ifs.

Eh, thought 'murica would side/help Taiwan? This will make it harder for them and also opens up the perfect collapse opportunity for China to show up as the benefactor or straight up bully them to submission

I kind of want a 5090, I was about it, but I wanted a 40% bump in raw performance. Waiting for 6090 or maybe chiplet design gpus

I've moved on from needing the latest thing and could just wait until the next administration if I really had to. I don't find gaming worth these prices and drama levels.
once you get prices up its hard to get them down. these tariffs will effect gaming's prices harder & faster than covid did 5 yrs ago

These tariffs are being used as threats for negotiation purposes. Look at the recent Columbia incident that only lasted a couple hours. It's possible that prices get cheaper for Americans in the end.

This thread is funny if only for all the Europeans thinking that if this does actually go through (it's a negotiation tactic and not meant to actually happen) it won't find it's way over to them 😂

I already have my PS5 Pro, and I'm going to make sure my 4070S lasts a long fucking time so I'm good for now.

If prices ever went down because we used threatening tactics, Americans everywhere would cheer thereby making true everyone's reasons to hate us.

TSMC just opened a plant in AZ.
Only for 4nm and up. So AMD and Nvidia can use it (assuming capacity holds up) but Apple and Qualcomm cannot. 3nm might come but not in time for next gen consoles, CPUs, or GPUs. That being said, it is likely this is just a negotiating tactic for now and/or exceptions might be put in place like Trump did last time.
