Tariffs?

Ok please enlighten me.

It's my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) most people think that the countries being slapped with tariffs are the ones paying the extra cost to the US government. But That is not true.

The IMPORTER pays the tariff % fee to the US government (customs). In the case of Japan, the tariff percent fee is 24%.

So the 24% tariff fee is slapped on the COST of goods (not retail) and is paid by the importer to the US government.

So who is the importer? Nintendo of America or stores like Target and Best Buy?

Either way, the exporting country is not paying the tariff fee....the company importing is.

The fee is either absorbed by the company importing the product or the consumer pays the fees.

So, all of these tariffs slapped on every country penalizes the consumer. It's meant to reduce the number of items imported (therefore other countries suffer along with the US consumer) and possibly will cause US companies to source item from the US or build factories to produce.

The flaw there is:

1. Most US companies are small and do not have the means or $$$ to build a factory
2. Large companies won't spend the $$$ on new factories if it's possible at any time that the tariff % may get reduced. So why spend the $$$ and time to build a factory (could take years to build)
3. Most companies (even ones not affected by these tariffs) will just raise the prices regardless.

So, most companies COULD absorb the cost....but we know companies like Nintendo will not do that. (greedy bastards)

Why do most people think foreign countries are paying these tariffs?

Why do most people think (including Cheetoman) think that tariffs benefits the consumer?

Simple, he is a con man who coned most people into voting for him now he has unchecked power to do whatever he wants and now we have this.

Not sure this belongs in the gaming category. A point of thought though, why are tariffs bad when USA uses them but when other countries use them (and nearly all do), it's no problem at all?

The biggest flaw is that making the product in the USA would be more expensive, tariff or not. Avoiding tariffs because they make your product too expensive to sell to American consumers, so in turn you build your product in America and now it is too expensive to sell to any consumer.

What was Japan's tariff on the USA? How about UK? What about the EU?

I had to stop here... You think Nintendo buys their products...from themselves?

Indirectly the exporting company may be paying the costs if they have to lower the price they sell to the importing company because they won't pay the old price now that a hefty tariff fee is whacked on top.

The importer will pay the price, which in turn is gonna up the prices for the consumer.

Yes, you as a consumer pay the increment, not the country the tariff is imposed to.

But we know how companies work and how retarded your average Joe is, so they won't miss to rise prises everywhere not just the US.

Here, fortunately, Mexico is exempt from tariffs. We have a very intelligent president, and with this situation, Mexico has made rapid and significant progress in the development of the country for 7 years, especially in tourism. Before, there were no foreigners, but now, rapidly, there are quite a few people from other countries visiting Mexico... even people from Japan, Arabia, Turkey, Europe, and the United States.

People think countries are paying?

Tariffs are basically never absorbed by companies, consumers will be paying these for sure.
