Expedition Survival Game?

Seriously why do these barely exist? A few months ago I was totally into "doomed" expeditions. I found stories like Franklin's search for the Northwest Passage depressingly haunting. The Donner Party showed me the limits of human endurance.

This stuff fascinated the hell out of me, so why not a game? Why not a next-gen Oregon Trail?

The theme is really fascinating, I agree. You might look into Cart Life and Kentucky Route Zero, if you have not already. Those go into that direction a tiny little bit.

Thanks for the recommendations, I appreciate it. I could really see a Tell Tale or Heavy Rain style game that could be absolutely brutal. The slightest error can spell disaster later down the road. It would be like how the witcher games handle choice.

I think a part of that is due to perceptions of audience acceptance. I personally know a few people who get peeved at the idea of a "bad ending" so to speak, and to be given that within a user-controlled environment such as videogames might cause a lot of sour notes.

if you've got a couple friends who are keen, try out the troll tribe maps on WC3. not so much about exploration but they're some of the funnest survival games.

wc3 custom has the best survival maps

fortress survival alpha
resident evil
etc

I played Fallout 3/New Vegas and Skyrim with survival mods some time. Simply travelling from one town to another requires careful planning. Dunno if that's what you seek though.

Yeah, I'm loving all the suggestions and I will check them out, but I fear the game I dream of doesn't exist in the first place lol.

I'm waiting for moders to make a version for Farcry 3 that removes all human enemies from the game, increases animals, and introduces a health system based off eating and sleeping via hunting and camping.

Try Miasmata.

I've always wanted a game based on this:

Experience 112 has you picking up the pieces after your expedition fails due to paranormal events.

Great demo available for download.

This is why I love threads like this, I always find something new to try out. Thanks Jackpot.

Seems a bit too much for striving for realism in game and I know I'm going to require taking notes, but it's interesting enough. Not a game for the casual adventure player though it seems, especially with the map and need for all the information to find possible.

I bought Don't starve and have played it for a couple minutes and this looks very promising (And Gorgeous downsampled from 3200x1800). I'm also going to probably check out Miasamata and Experience 112 too.

Appreciate all the recommendations again.

Just wanted to bump this thread to say thanks for all the suggestion gaffers. Don't Starve is fucking amazing and quite along the lines of what I wanted. Really appreciate all the feedback.

Miasmata is great. Also MineCraft in hardcore mode gets really tense since your whole world is destroyed if you can't survive. I also like DayZ.
Also MineCraft and DayZ are way better to survive with friends.
