Finished in around 110 hours.
All in all I enjoyed the game, as I said before it has a lot of heart and you can feel the passion of the devs in making it.
The ending was a wild ride, the whole set piece was pretty epic. As far as what happened during the ending... I still have to wrap my head around it; I might have to read some theories to make sense of it. Part 3 has a lot of explaining to do for sure. I was one of the few that appreciated the background changes made to the story in Remake, and I feel the same for Rebirth.
I think the best way to enjoy this game is to just chill and savour the journey without rushing to the next story beat. The side quests are well done (mostly) and really add a lot to the characters, this is a game where I couldn't recommend skipping them. A lot of this game is based on character interactions, so it's worth doing them just for that alone. Well, it helps that I really like these characters, a huge improvement over the OG.
All story beats were excellent, whether they were serious or on the silly side. They really leave an impression so it will be hard to forget some sections of this game.
In general the production value is really high, I feel like all side quests have some kind of mocap instead of using canned animations like most other JRPGs. It's fucking nice playing a JRPG with high production values every once in a while, since games in this genre are developed with AA budgets most of the times.
The open world... is the part I enjoyed the least. It's a run-of-the-mill Ubisoft map sweeping open world, which is pretty mid. There are some positive aspects about it though: the variety of biomes was pretty good, I liked how each map had a different traversal option, and all things considered the zones were pretty small, so it was not hard to do all activities/objectives.
My favourite minigame was Chocobo Racing, they really put some efforts in creating all those tracks. It was really fun! Overall I liked most of the minigames anyway, I didn't expect it because I usually skip most of them in other JRPGs.
The combat was good but it felt too chaotic at times. It really shines in 3vs1, and since a decent amount of boss fights are like that I'm not complaining too much.
The progression system is pretty bad, I hope they consolidate it somehow because currently there are too many moving parts. The menus didn't help either, something weird is going on there because they don't feel organized in the right way.
Overall a really good game and I see why it was nominated for GOTY.
Part 3 can’t come soon enough.
