If Game Rant is like IGN, a perfect score means "highest recommendation" not that the game is perfect.
 
On a side note, respect to the people who got it early and didn't leak the game on a streaming site (or at least on a major mainstream platform).
 
Eurogamer gave FFXVI and Redfall the same score. Fucking clown world shit. They also had a 2nd person do a video review for the game that was much more positive. They need to get their shit together.
 
Haven't read any of these reviews in their entirety, but some of the excerpts sort of confirm my worry of "mostly action" with very subdued RPG elements. A sad day for a former RPG heavyweight series, but I've still got my copy on order and ready to see for myself tomorrow. Hopefully the other qualities redeem it as a package. I still expect this to be the best title overall since XII though I guess that doesn't say much considering what is in-between.
 
Welp, time to avoid all spoilers until I get a PS5.

Im just really happy we got a proper FF game that didnt release to middling reviews, but saddened that I wont be playing until anywhere from a month from now to the end of the year.

I look at this, and go, yeah no kidding. Any actual fan of the RPG genre arguing in good faith, let alone the JRPG subgenre, would look at this game and deduce that in 30 seconds.

A 10 doesn't or shouldn't mean perfect. Let's be honest, there's no such thing as a perfect game. Someone will always be able to point out a flaw or two in any game.

The way I've always seen it with review scores is how highly the reviewer would recommend it based on their experience.
 
I've read a lot of the reviews so far and I think I'll regretfully be giving this a miss.

The summon battles aren't interesting to me and it comes across as quite light on being an RPG with the quests coming in for quite strong criticism.

Overall not what I'd want from a Final Fantasy game,

First mainline (non online) one I've given a miss. The times they are a' changing.

We were expecting a biased review after their diversity "concerns" for a Final Fantasy game. Bunch of virtue-signaling clowns living in glass houses.

FYI it needs to go up 60 spots on metacritic to reach 89 and has to drop 190 spots to go down to 87 so it probably is not going any lower than 88

same. hell, just the idea of playing a 35-40 hour version of dmc did me in. no shame, mate...
 
I thought it'd be an 88 and that's where its at right now. Of course, I don't have a PS5, so I got no skin in the game. But personally, hearing what has 'become' of mainline FF is a bit sad. Just doesn't sound like Final Fantasy to me.
 
Well, the reviews pretty much signal the death knell for the sales potential of this game as well. It needed at least Zelda like reviews to generate really positive word of mouth.

I see that there is a not-insignificant portion of game reviewers that continue to be insane and I should continue to disregard the aggregate scores that they influence as usual.
 
DAMN the wait is going to kill me! I hope my local EBgames doesn't screw with my deluxe edition delay shipment tomorrow.

yeah for sure it's a great game.
I can't imagine it getting the same score as halo infinite... terrible game (I finished it).
So far this year in weird reviews:

Forspoken - Scored too low
Hogwards - scored just right
Redfall - scored too high. I think 6/10 is too much if they gave similar scores to forspoken
re4 remake - about right.

This judging by the demo is either a 9 or 10. No way it's an 8 or below. Forspoken is 7-8 for me and this is better than it.

88/100 is extremely good, I expected the few 6 and 7/10.

But calling it a failure and that will have a low WoM on other sites….

Eurogamer UK has given Final Fantasy XVI the same score as Aliens: Dark Descent, and a lower score than a fucking Story of Seasons farm sim.

These idiotic websites shouldn't be giving scores to games unless there's an editorial scoring criteria that sets in stone stuff like "if we gave Gollum an X score, then there's absolutely no fucking way in hell that you can give Starfield less than that".

What a shitshow, FFXVI deserved better, even if its not MC95+ material.

I'm not even fan of FF series. But it's sad to see how meaningless shits affected a game reviews.
Hope it'll sell 20+ millions just for a slap in a face for those "gaming sites" just like Hogwart did.
