Fascinating article on the Crest of Flames - KOTAKU

Now on my final playthrough of the game. 100h in.

I've traveled quite a bit for work in the last couple of weeks and, out of curiosity, I checked the shelves at Targets/Best Buys/etc. in Michigan, Ohio and California and it's been really hard to find copies of FE3H. I wonder how well the game is selling stateside.

So for someone that’s not really into SRPG’s is it worth getting?
All I hear are good things about this game but I’m not a fan of the genre and was wondering if other people not into this type of game can say it’s worth a buy.
I see copies of it everywhere .

Have you ever played an Atelier game? Er Persona 5? It is like that but rather than exploring your are stuck in a school while you sorta teach kids better way to kill each other. Except a loli is you! You also can't jump for some reason. Or point at a barrel and say TARU!
:(

The game is so much fun. Running with the Black Eagles and everytime I advance new cool stuff happens

Take it from me, Y E S. I don’t like strategy/tactical RPGs and I’m enjoying the hell out of this. The lecturing, planning and all that is simply great.

Just started on this game over the weekend, didn't have a ton of time to play yet. I hate the calendar thing. Time limits in games always make me nervous because it puts me into the mindset of "I have to play optimally". I'm trying to resist it, but I do have a question. I just opened up the ability to ask people to join my class and recruit them. When I fail to recruit, I get a notification of what they require stat-wise to join up. If someone says "Axe and Riding" does that mean total units in my class with axe and riding skill, or Byleth's specific Axe and Riding skill? It was kinda unclear. I hope I don't have to raise a bunch of skills on Byleth just to recruit the people I want.

Byleth’s skills. You can upgrade them by using them in battle and/or getting faculty instructions from the other teachers.

You can also raise your “relationship” level with recruitable characters by buying them gifts they like, taking them to a tea party, having lunch with them and asking them to help you out in your next battle (fighting alongside them contributes).

All of these work towards recruiting them.

But time doesn't flow. Your actions do. When you get higher prof levels you won't have anything to do anyway. :messenger_ghost: Ofc it is Byleth based, if it was class based it would have been easier. For recruiting, raising their support lowers the stat requirement and they can also join you randomly. Only 4 or so people are locked depending on the house you chose to recruit and you'll need skills to unlock them rather than relying on raising supports but again the stats requirement will be lower.

Seriously never try to recruit based on your stats. Invite them for mission assistance and have them fight alongside Byleth, invite them to dinner, tea, and choir practice. Shower them with gifts they like until you reach support level B with them. After that they have a ~25% chance to ask to join your house every week.

Oops, I switched Byleth to using a lance because if I can get just one character to join Black Eagles, it's Leonie, but guess I didn't need to do that. Oh well, I have been inviting her to missions and eating with her so I should still be good.

Ah, that's much easier to understand now. Is it 25% each "check" or is it set for that exploration on whether or not they'll join. In other words, if I abuse the save system and just keep resetting a save, will they eventually say yes that day, or will they say no 100% of the time if it fails the "check" when I load the exploration?

I've heard you can save scum it. The question to join your house happens during the middle of the week on instruction weeks. So get your character to support level B (after the support conversation), save, and then instruct however you like for the week. At the end of the week, if you didn't get asked, reset and try again.

Aside from the side stories, there aren't really any time limits.
Yes there is a story battle you have to do each month, but you don't get to choose when to do it, or whether to do it.
You have four options to choose how you spend your weekend, but you never want to choose rest or lectures. Those are really only there if you don't actually feel like battling or walking around the monastery.
Of the remaining two options, you should always be choosing monastery. The only times I would say battle are if you have battle quests/side stories that you want to do, or if you have absolutely no money etc and want to grind. Even then, I would say to wait until you have two battle actions (can battle twice) before doing it.
To sum it up, monastery>battle>>>>>>>>the other two.
Later in the game you will have more action points at the monastery than you know what to do with.
On my second playthrough I would just spend many weekends resting because I have nothing else worthwhile to do, and want to continue with the story.

I just ate alot since I had like 16 students and they would all be half happy before I could tutor them on monday.

Some notable easter eggs, the horses helmet when you promote a unit as a Dark Mage is a replica of Grima. The obvious only is the outside land names Brigid and Dagda, based on FE4 and FE5 character names.

Does the time travel mechanic allows you to re-roll failed hits or are the results always the same if you do the same thing. For example you have a 90% hit chance and you miss, you use the time thingy and do it again, will you miss again or is there a chance that you will hit this time? Because from my experience it seems that the results are always the same. I guess it has a seeded "random number" generator like Xcom or DOOM games.

I've tried a number of times and I never managed to hit after missing an attack prior to using Divine Pulse. Not once.

Have you tried moving to a different hex or attacking after playing with a different character? I never experimented with it like I did in XCOM but I think that should work.

I think the reason they did that is so you wouldn’t take advantage of the time mechanics. Once you miss an attack, you will always miss no matter what. One of my spell caster miss an attack and I turn back time to try again and still missed and switched to different spell but it still would miss.

That could just be misfortune. I think if you played with another character and then went back to the caster you should have a chance to hit.

If you mean their goals, that mostly depends what you them to concentrate on. One of my students wanted to go with spear instead of axe but I already have two other students using spear so I refused.

I’m trying to figure out the best mix because I only have one healer

I have also 1 dedicated healer but also 4 other characters that can heal as their secondary ability (holy knights or just characters who have faith experience). Always think of what master class you want them to take and then work towards that goal.

I seriously can’t figure out what everyone does. All what I know to do is use their secondary special attacks. I also have shield and armour in my inventory that I don’t know how to use. Still trying to figure out all that

When teaching them manually, you can increase their faith level for one of your students.

Shields you have to equip like weapons. Characters can have one weapon (sword, spear, bow, etc.) and one accessory (magic ring, shield, torch, etc.) equiped at any one time. Pay attention to weight though, it is super important and isn't explained in the game at all. Basically the heavier equipment you use the less attacks you will make and enemies will attack you more times.

Depends. Leather shields add 1 weight and so have only minimal impact on speed. Rings obviously have no weight so those are the best for characters that need a very high speed stat. Then you got heavy duty knights which aren't going to be fast no matter what so just put the heaviest shields on them to make them literally invincible to most physical attacks. So in summary: fast roles (assassin, swordsman etc.) = no shields; heavy roles (fortress knights, heavy knights etc.) = the best shields. Also, keep in mind that physics are stupid in this game since steel and silver weapons weight more than iron for some reason. This can be circumvented by the fact that 5 points in strenth ignore 1 point of weight so a character with 25 strenght can ignore 5 point of weight.

You have been great thank you very much. One last thing, I got plenty of investigation notes. Is there anything to do about them?

They are quests you can do in within the school outside of battle quests.

Yeah, pro tip: you don’t have to take him on straight away. You can wait until a later battle when you are stronger.

I learnt the hard way too.

20 hours in. Chapter 9. How many chapters? Loving the game so much. Just wish it ran better. Yeah, yeah, its on switch, but a smooth framerate at this resolution shouldn't be that hard.

It's rendering the whole environment with all characters, support, amd batallions at all points in the battle. I just wish the zoomed in view was more playable to get more out of the impressive effect, but it's definitely understandable why it drops the occasional frame in a seemingly simple top-down render.

I don’t understand where the wait for the student to ask to join your class came from. All of the students so far have instantly become recruitable with the “recruit” option when talking to them instantly after their B support. Only two students might not work with the b support thing since they seem to have a mandatory stat/skill requirement.

So far I'm about 2 hours in. I love it so far.

I have a few minor issues though. As I suspected from the gameplay vids, the actual battles can be a little tricky to tell units apart. I'm not sure how they can improve this. Sometimes I wouldn't mind a 16bit mode, I never had this issue back on the DS or GBA.

Also do the choices in dialogue really have that much influence?
And I wish there was an auto skip option for the dialogue like persona 5 has. I just want to lie back and listen to the dialogue without presing A every 5 seconds.

Course, all minor complaints. These games are like crack to me.

I just highlight the character and it tells you who they are

I'm so glad Awakening saved the series with waifu's. Missing out on Fire Emblem 12 was upsetting.

B support lowers the stats needed to get them to join you to like D. So there you go.

Yeah, but the waiting for the student to interact with you at a 25% change isn't a required thing. I recruited all, but the last two remaining I need, by just asking them on the same day I forced their B rank support. I'm wondering how many people don't know that you don't need to wait for the student to initiate the support rank events either. If you meet the criteria and they show up as ready in the support menu, then you just need to fast travel once and you'll see an ellipsis on the map where you can initiate the event.

I think you are confusing unlocking the first rank with them joining you after you have them on rank b by themselves. For the most part the first support (C) CAN be missed and you have to look for your student within the map.

Some of my C ranks I got through the student approaching me during the academic week, mostly people that had leveled up during the previous battle or activities. I automatically went for the C ranks that were available when I looked at the menu when exploring. Most of the B ranks I self initiated since I was purposely loading gifts on the person for it. All the recruiting I did was through asking the person while walking around the campus.

Students that aren't in your house by default need to be looked up to initiate supports. Your support thing will usually say they want to talk to you or something or say something about they aren't ready?? I have also recruited students without even starting C supports...and yes you can miss them. I missed 3 C supports on my first playthrough. Can't select them after the golden age arc :D

I'm sure on your next playthrough you'll beat him on his first encounter no problem. Use your battalions on him and then finish him off with Lysithea or somebody with armorbreaker or w/e that skill is called.

I got bored of the Black Eagles to be honest with that idiot called Berndetta always dying first in every damn mission

I’m in a mission where I have to face the death knight and he’s behind a door. Those teleports messed my mind and I ran out of 25 turns. My next run is going to be easy since I figured out the teleports
