Characters, definitely. Fates' cast is consistently popular in the scheme of the larger series, and even people who don't care for the game's story typically find some of its cast endearing.

The initial disappointment is somewhat justified. Whining about it for months on end every time the game is discussed tends to make people less sympathetic to that position.

Celica is playable, but the History Mode map you have to complete to unlock her is based off the final map in Gaiden. Which is also the same map as in Echoes, only it's the 8-bit version in Warriors.

But other than that she's basically a guest star.

I'm also a fan of dry humor, but not the GameFaqs-level language sprinkled throughout the review. Granted, I don't think outright hating a game series should prevent you from reviewing one of their titles but a modicum of professionalism would go a long way. I'm actually pretty fond of harsh reviews, but not that kind.

Play at least Conquest to completion. The story is the 2nd worst out of the three but it has the best gameplay and maps.

Yes, the roster is lackluster. I think anyone can accept that. But retroactively dredging up complaints for Awakening and Fates, and them alone, without acknowledging that the older titles had flaws too is bias.

Not surprised by the reviews really. Musou games often have lukewarm receptions. Very divisive, and it's not hard to see why, they get repetitive if you don't enjoy the game play enough.

As a FE and Musou fan I'm still looking forward to playing it though.

I know this is an oft-discussed issue on GAF, but it just seems silly that a couple of reviews can derail an overall score. I mean, sixteen reviews are above 75 and the average still comes out to 73. How much weight does GameSpot carry?

yeah it's the tone and approach of the review. Game Informer used to shit on every Mario Party in the reviews (like, 1s and 3s) and it was done in a funny way. They were not behaving in a turdlike manner

To be honest, I wasn’t too excited about the marriage and children (I thought I would be but I was wrong). It became more of a bother. The core gameplay was king but I also really liked the characters and story. I played Birthright first and am currently on Conquest and enjoying it even more.

I haven’t even opened Echoes yet. Not enough gaming hours in the day!

I read it and it seemed fine? It's the opinion of one person. Not everyone is going to agree that mousou games are good/bad. I can already tell reading a few reviews that I align much more closely to the Metro review than the others giving it an 8.

Right? I think all of us, at one point or another, have greatly enjoyed titles that weren't exactly declared masterpieces by critics. We oughtta see the why and not just a number.

Clearly the Metro fellow is bringing the show down, and to someone who loved the hell out of Hyrule Warriors, a stance that inherently hates the genre is irrelevant to me. Removing his review makes the average 77.5. (As of right now, more reviews are to follow, surely).

I'm not enamoured by the roster (both the selection and the choice to include clones) but everything else sounds like a pretty fun time. Tempting as it is to get it at launch, chances are this will be discounted come the holidays, so I'm gonna hold up a bit for now.

I have it preordered but I’m now on the fence. I love FE and have limited experience of the Warriors games. I was hoping the FE elements in this would sell it.

Edit: I should add, I watched the direct and it looks great fun, I was totally sold. Now I’m questioning ‘how long will it be fun for?’.

I got it for £36, the price of three uk cinema tickets (without my usual cinema discount though). In pure entertainment/value terms, simplistically, if I can get six and a bit hours of fun it’s worth it (comparing apples and oranges, I know).

Probably, they're one of the most read - if not the most read - uk reviewers. And the best too.

It's obvious from the article that he never even gave the game a chance because he hates the series. I have no issue with people being critical but it's super obvious he made up his mind before even playing it.

And yes, the writing is juvenile. For example:

The irony is that this still counts as probably our favourite Dynasty Warriors game, but we assure you that is not a recommendation. The closest we can get to one is that we were rarely angry while playing the game. We were bored, but at such a consistent level that it was almost relaxing. The more you play the less you care, until it all becomes a perpetual motion engine of button-mashing brain cell destruction.

Fire Emblem Warriors has more in common with Cookie Clicker than a real video game, as you mindlessly jab the same two attack buttons for hours on end, until everyone is beaten and your ability to form coherent thoughts has been bludgeoned to death alongside them. So, like we said, just like all the other Dynasty Warriors games.

It's also kind of sloppy. He uses "simplistic," "mindless" and "repetitive" a number of times as if we didn't get it the first time.

Seriously. Both Hyrule Warriors and now FE Warriors feel like missed opportunities to expand Musou game play.

I would have loved the more party adventure type feel of Heroes here, and Hyrule Warriors should have done more to expand on exploration and using the world and gear to impact that world. There is some good here but just not enough to keep me engaged sadly.

I think it will. Each pack will introduce 3 characters and three history maps (this games equivalent of adventure mode). The only thing HW has over it is that they used the DLC to add MM representation to the roster but the DLC for FE:W is focused on the three games already represented.

She really isn't, she is like Azura, important to the plot but Chrom and Robin that ultimately leads the game.

Not really.

A lot of lead Fire Emblem characters start with 'I'm important, my family/kingdom was betrayed, now I'm on the run/out for revenge with my retainers'. Lucina's is more 'My entire generation is stuck in a horrific, post-apocalyptic future. As a last grab for survival I grabbed the children of my dad's greatest allies, took the identity of a mythological hero for them to rally around and travelled back in time, looking to set things right.'

How on earth that is 'brings nothing to the table' is beyond me, she has one of the more original backgrounds compared to most of the more popular Lords.
