I have never been more wrong about the success of a game.
No one sees these types of phenomenon coming. Fortnite is now up there with Pong, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros, DOOM, Quake, Pokemon Red & Blue, Half-Life, Gran Turismo, FFVII, Tomb Raider, Halo, Guitar Hero, Wii Sports, The Sims, Minecraft, Angry Birds and Pokemon Go as one of the most important games ever made in terms of mass market mindshare.

In your (and everyone else's defense), this game(post launch) used to be just another BR game with a quirk(building). Epic did a lot of work to change it to what it is today.
The success of this game is a real mystery to me.
Not that mysterious. It's turned into a platform for brands and celebrities to engage with users, and pop culture moments are leaned into really heavily. Those brands/celebrities are happy to reach a massive audience of young people, and those people are happy to stay up to date with whatever pop culture trend is currently highlighted on the platform. Some of them feel left out if they're not in on the latest "thing", so they engage a lot.

It helps that the core gameplay of the BR game has remained solid since they launched it.

Funnily enough at its original launch it used to be a single player/co-op survival/builder. And it bombed pretty hard.
They managed to completely turn its fortune around when they decided at the last minute to salvage it turning it into the poor man's PUBG...

Poor man's PUBG that on the other hand ended up massively surpassing the popularity of the original despise all its shortcomings (horrendous aesthetic and art style, hideous UI, poor mechanics, poor netcode, etc).

Yeah the BR mode was the last gasp of a dying game. Funny how it worked out.

Half of that is subjective, but yeah. The original idea would have made a great mobile game, in hindsight. But they pivoted well, and had the foresight to turn it into something more that just another BR.

Bit of a side note, but while my interest in videogames is something that I rarely bring up at work, from time to time the topic of games came up with some of the kids who train in our boxing gym. Especially since a couple of them are already aware I play some.

I kid you not, somehow most of them while hearing about games being mentioned immediately ask me if I play Fortnite. No, it's not even correct to say that they ask... They hear "videogames" and they start talking almost under the assumption that if you are into this stuff you must play Fortnite by default.
They always seem surprised or mildly disappointed when I answer that I'm familiar with it but I don't like it so I don't play it.

So it turns out EGS >>> Steam just for this game
This is across all platforms, though.
Plus, keep in mind that Fortnite, exactly like Riot with League of Legend (another game that ALLEGEDLY is bigger than the entire Steam userbase by itself), doesn't have a live counter visible for everyone, so frankly speaking they can claim whatever they want and you'll have to just take their word for it.

To be fair, you could levy most of those complaints about PUBG as well.

Fortnite is an amazing success story and you have to tip your hat for the development team being agile enough to pivot away from what was certain failure.

Super important to note that the cool dudes at Gaf never touch the thing though… ! Never forget to say that in any new Fortnite thread.

I was pre-seasons on this game and I still think it’s a fun experience…. Although some of the big tie ins are a little lame.

Let's not overlook the fact that Juice WRLD has been dead for five years
Yeah that's crazy. But he's also had like 3 or 4 posthumous albums. The last one came out yesterday with a cover designed by Takashi Murakami. Soundcloud gave us a lot of trash rappers. But some gems came out of it.

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
It’s a fun game that keeps evolving. They set it up for success with its lack photorealism as well.

I don’t play it often but every once in a while I download it to fuck around. Have spent $0 on it lol

As soon as Fortnite implements A.I it’s over boys.
They have a lockdown on this expansive ‘everything universe’
When a.i. can create game modes and modify in real time. They can have those concerts, events dialed to 11.

If I was younger with more free time I would be sad that this is such a huge thing and where the industry is going. But I’m glad, less games for me to spend money and time on.
There's more variety in games today than ever before.

This is the closest thing to the "metaverse" everyone had a hard on for a few years ago. I assume they're working on this, but all it needs now is just a 'walk about' mode. Sell plots of land, sell parts to build a house, decorations, etc. The moment the main form of participation is no longer shooty shooty bang bang, they might as well get a money printing press installed at Epic HQ.

Fortnite is a great video game. I don't get the hate. I dont play it because i dont want to get sucked in to the microtransaction hole, but the no build mode is genuinely very fun. The open world is fun to explore and just fuck around in.

The character designs for the IP are some of their best designs in general.

I’m thinking of trying this again in no build mode to see how much it’s changed.

I usually mess with it once a year for a few days.

I still prefer war zone for my BR fix. Feels less bull shitty?

I’m 40yrs old and haven’t played it in 6-7 years but my two boys are now 9 and 13 and they were both on flipping out. I asked them if any of their friends were on and they opened up their “friends” tab over and prob no less then two dozen of their friends from school were all playing. I cannot believe they’ve managed to bridge so many age groups to retain relevance 🤯

While I’m not a big fan of Fortnite and don’t like it enough to play it alone or with strangers. It was still kinda fun when I used to play this with my friends and mess around in the game. Like how they put in work for custom events like Galactus, Thanos Infinity Gaunlet, and especially that cool Kaiju vs robot fight. Way more interesting and cooler compared to PugG and H1z1which I also used to play.

I do kind of hate it too.
It means a huge chunk of people are ok with 1 game.(which is fine)
Different publishers/developers are stuck in trying to fight for their time. Means more attempts/failures to have what Fortnite has. If Fortnite didn’t exist what would that mean for games, genres, output and direction of this industry.
(at the end of the day trivial what ifs)
