Glen Schofield (OG Dead Space / Callisto Protocol) - 'We Pitched EA Dead Space 4 This Year, They Refused'

EA

Apparently the Dead Space budgets are too high for the money they make. With 3 they tried to remove horror and make it more like uncharted (otherwise it wouldn't have been Greenlet). It just alienated the fans. I recently did a play through of 3 and it was better than I remembered.

I'm surprised Schofield had the gall to go back to EA and pitch it after The Callisto Protocol underperformed so dramatically

There's just no audience there these days for what Schofield likes to make

God dammit.
As I recall, the original vision for Dead Space 4 would have featured a new protagonist, a woman, as she scavenges ruined ships. This would have been set after the ending to Dead Space 3: Awakening, in which a swarm of necromorph Brethren Moons destroys the Earth.
Originally I hated the idea of a new protagonist, but I think it would be really cool now, since it would be set in a dismal cosmos where nearly all human life in the galaxy has been extinguished, and likely where no planet is habitable.
Man, I wish we could finally have more Dead Space.

I bought the new dead space and would have triple dipped as I often do with major titles.

Except they had to go and make it woke. Which is an attack on the majority of the gamer demographic.

See concord for further details and suck my balls.

It's not a GaaS Hero Shooter, annual Sports title, or Mobile game that will generate revenue streams through long term engagement and recurring transactions.
Hey they still greenlit Hazelight's new game. But they've got a GOTY title under their belt and tbh I'm guessing the budget for Split Fiction is probably way less than what DS4 would need

No, of course I don't like EA either, but you can understand them here, after the unsuccessful sales of the remake of the first part, and after he upset Krafton by several hundred million dollars with his The Callisto Protocol, I would also refuse him. As much as I would like to see a continuation of this game or a remaster of the second part. But objectively I do not yet see a person to whom this could be entrusted without fear for the result.

I have nothing against Glen Schofield - but after the bomb he threw at Krafton, no one will want to work with him for a long time.

It's not gonna get approved unless they pitch
dEAd space 4: Ultimate Squad Pack Deluxe edition (400 bonus Necro Coins) - pre-order for gold wristband exclusive skin

They also just funded and released an amazing Dead Space Remake, ready to revive and eventually continue this incredible series, and no one cared.

Recall just a handful of us in the OT, before more people joined in the appreciation when the game landed on Game Pass. Too late.

The remake was great - sales were really bad, so bad that the remake of the second part was simply cancelled.
It's hard to tell whether the game came out at the wrong time, or the price played a role, or whether the negativity from The Callisto Protocol also affected this game - but in the end, this remaster sold extremely poorly.

That Den of Geek article is a perfect summary.

It's a painful truth, but people just don't care for Dead Space. Not enough for what it takes to make these games.

DS Remake was my GOTY and OG DS and DS2 have always been some of my favorite games of all time. Genuinely love everything about this series, bought plenty of merchandise over the years, have the animated movies in BD.. it just sucks immensely seeing this incredible IP dying twice for the same exact reason.
And I can't really blame EA on this, they tried with DS, they tried again with DS2, went desperate with DS3, tried one last time with DS Remake. Gamers spoke.

The Dead Space remake was very well done apart from one thing.

The traversal stutter present on all platforms. Pc made it more apparent due to the higher frame rates.

I couldn't get myself to finish it as it was too immersion breaking. As far as I'm aware they never fixed that. Wouldn't have bought another in the series too support that

I got Callisto Protocol and Dead Space Remake near launch and found them to be amazing games. Unfortunately they were released close to one another and cannibalized each other's sales and now neither franchise is moving forward sadly.

I personally hope both franchises get a shot at sequels at some point.

Callisto protocol deservedly flopped hard and booth dead space 3 and the dead space remake didn't do so hot either.

This is one of the rare occasions where I have to admit that EA is probably right in their judgment or the decision is at least understandable.

He blew it with Callisto Protocol. Likely the last time he will ever touch a AAA budget.
A USD$165 million dollar single player, 6 hour horror game. Man, I never thought I'd see anyone take a swing that big at a horror game again. And yeah, graphically, it was all on the screen - game is fucking incredible looking. But oh boy, does it not play like a game built from esteemed developers with a massive budget.

Dead Space remake was solid, but they botched the delivery of the narrative and it tarnishes the whole thing. The OG has better acting, better dialog, and better pacing across the board. Actually, all the characters were a downgrade - especially Mercer. I do like the new Nicole side story, but all of the changes subtract rather than add. Much like Resident Evil 4, the original is just pitch perfect for what it is, and the remake lacks the soul for it to click together to the same degree. EA coming off of the Dead Space remake, and Schofield coming off of Callisto Protocol, it may be better they didn't go for Dead Space 4; I can't imagine it living up to first two Dead Space games by a wide margin.

PC made it more apparent because it was a borderline broken port.

Consoles [showing Xbox Series] also have a little bit of traversal stutter, usually manifests with double animations frames, but here.. the game is just.. just not at all fun to play.
And loses all of that ambience and atmosphere because every single time you go near a door, and the game has tons of doors as that's just its design, and every single time you go near one, the game would stutter. And you could just go back and forth areas and just constantly having stutter.. oh.. it's such a shame.

By this comparison between the PS5 and PC version, you can clearly see that the PC version suffers obnoxious traversal stuttering due to Denuvo Anti-Tamper software incorporation whereas the PS5 version, however, barely stutters, and runs silky smooth 60fps at all!
In short, this proves that video game industry has to completely stop butchering PC customers by releasing an inferior PC product that's incorporated with BS Denuvo Anti-Tamper software that legitimately scans & checks to ensure you have a legit copy of the game on PC which is by far the worst business decision whatsoever!
System Spec: Intel Core i9-14900KS (5.9Ghz), RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6X Video Card

This issue, combined with the "woke" complaints, didn't help sales for sure.. but still I wouldn't say it made a significant difference overall.
Personally had a blast on PS5, started playing as soon as they removed VRS and made four playthroughs in a row. Game looked great in Performance Mode:

To think we could be playing Dead Space 2 soon looking like this, with a more interconnected Sprawl..

I must have been lucky with ds remake because on my pc i had less stutter than callisto on ps5...

Far from unplayable.

None of the game "journalists" would cover Callisto protocol at the time because it wasn't an agenda game and was buried.

It's EXCELLENT and I highly recommend it.

Let's not revise history here. Callisto Protocol got quite the healthy marketing campaign, including views at major showcases.

It was well covered. Every major outlet discussed the previews and showcased the gameplay reveals etc.

WIll they make a dead space 2 remake or did the first sell like trash?
Remake sales were unsatisfactory, and when EA commented on the rumor of DS2 being cancelled as a result, they simply implied the game was never in development to begin with..

Why would EA want Dead Space 4 from guys whose last project was Callisto Protocol? They've shown that A LOT of wrong decisions were made and Schofield as the studio head was responsible for many of them.

It's a bigger disgrace that the team behind Dead Space 1 Remake didn't get a chance to remake the sequel. They've done an incredible job with the first game.

The only team that I wanted to touch DS going forward was the Remake team. That game is fucking airtight. The balls for Schofield to even pitch that after what a microwaved abortion of his own 20 year old ideas Callisto was.

Remake crew doing their own game would've been super interesting imo, they're very talented and have a lot of taste and restraint.

That Dead Space remake was utterly pointless imo - It barely looked better than the old game and was practically a shot for shot remake most of the time. A remake should bring a lot more to the table. They should have just made Dead Space 4.

No surprise, considering the massive flop that was Th Callisto Protocol. And that even the Dead Space Remake, failed to meet expectations.

I don't understand why Dead Space can't get a footing, but it can't. It wasn't able to when it originally came out and it didn't again. I don't know why RE can do it and DS can't, but if I was EA I wouldn't sink more resources into this series either. And I would love to play DS2 remade but can't blame them.

Except every change they made to the game was for the worse. They're good at graphics though for sure.

Eh? The guys behind the Remake are now working on both Battlefield AND Iron Man. They're productively engaged. Why would it be a a 'disgrace' when they've got a chance to make bigger waves?

Yet Veilguard somehow did...EA can just fuck off and die already!

Turning down a new Dead Space game with the dev whose last horror game was a major flop does not mean they've killed the franchise.

DSR didn't sell by the looks of it. I think EA full on said DS2R was never on the table and then devs said later that yes, it was.

I might be talking out of my ass but I feel like everyone has been seeing Resident Evil do the remakes and sell like hot cakes and they somehow think their Horror franchise is as relevant. I love Dead Space but that franchise has been deader than a door nail for ages so I can't imagine it sold anywhere near their no-doubt absurd expectations.
