GRID: Autosport - Announcement trailer and info

Because people wanted cockpit cam, so they put it back in. For some reason, whether it's performance or time restrictions, they're unable to fill out the detail of these cockpits. They've given it a DOF effect, which is not all that unrealistic if you're travelling at speed and staring into the distance, which covers up the lack of detail somewhat. The alternative would have been a silhouette, like Gran Turismo's 'standard' cars - I think this is a better solution.

The Shift series did a similar thing to create a sense of speed, but it was dynamic based on how fast you were going.

It shouldn't hurt your eyes though - you're just expecting it to come back into focus by staring at it. The solution is to use it as designed - don't stare at it, and watch where you're going! ;) The point of a cockpit cam isn't to ogle at car interiors, it's to give you the correct perspective. Of course the camera should be there!

The DOF effect didn't make sense in Shift and it's only there in GRID because the cars weren't modeled with cockpitview in mind. When I stare into the distance in a game, I'm not focused on the dials just like in a real car, but I can still see them whenever I want for information. Now, 30% of the screen is blurred out all the time and it takes me right out of the experience.

To me, it makes the game feel like a quick way to make some money on the critic GRID2 rightfully garnered. It's not a matter about textures, it's a very low poly cockpit modeled to save performance because no one was meant to see it in the first place. It will always look unfinished to me. Guess I have to wait for a next generation CM racer.

I understand, but you asked why they used that camera at all, when one of the biggest complaints about Grid 2 was not having that camera. There is more to having your virtual head in the correct position than being able to look down at the dials. After all, in many sim setups, an accurate cockpit FOV results in the dials being off the screen, so you have to rely on overlays or other equipment for the information. Grid Autosport will have a HUD, so you can still glance somewhere for info even though the interior is out of focus.

End of the day, it's better that the camera position is there for people who want it.

It's a shame that they're unable to provide better interiors for the PC version, but it's been clear from the start (including the naming of the game) that this isn't a next-gen Grid experience, and if you think it doesn't offer enough value at full RRP that's fair enough. It is only coming to last gen and PC, so they probably can't justify making more detailed interiors for one version.

Plus a 5% discount via liking their FB page. With 91K likes on FB and very decent ratings on both HotUK Deals and Trust Pilot (900+ reviews; 9.8/10 avg) , I took the plunge and pre-ordered.

Just pre-ordered, thanks for the heads up!

No next gen, son I am disappoint.

Wonder what that means for F1 2014, I'm sure they said they are rebuilding the game for next gen, surely they could use the same engine for this?

It sucks there's no PS4/XBO version. The first Grid was my favorite racing game last generation.

Want this so badly but last gen only? No thanks.

No next-gen version? Pass.

No next gen wtf?

What the fuck are ya'll talking about? The game is leading on the PC smfh :/ (aka get the PC version which is the "next gen" version)

The game is only coming to 360, PS3 and PC. Just because there is a PC version doesn't mean it's 'next gen' - PCs don't have a 'gen' like consoles. The PC version in this case will run higher resolutions, framerates, and have some small enhancements here and there, but it is essentially still the same game that you'll get on 360/PS3. If the game was coming to One/PS4, it wouldn't have been such a short turnaround after Grid 2. You can clearly see the lineage - Grid Autosport still retains many similarities in visuals to all the previous Codemasters games from last gen running the same engine - Grid 2, Dirt 3, Dirt 2, F1, etc.

They have a new engine in development, and I imagine we'll see it first in the next Dirt game. It should have a huge visual upgrade, such as vehicle detail, of which Grid Autosport is not comparable to the likes of Forza 5, DriveClub, Project CARS, as well as big environment improvements, big lighting improvements, etc. This is very likely to appear on One, PS4 and PC, and if there are last-gen versions of it, they will be distinctly inferior.

So basically they took all the content they've made over the years on the EGO Engine for Grid 1, Grid 2 and the F1 games and made some kind of "Ultimate EGO Engine" game as a finaly sendoff before next gen. I'm totally fine with that!

I don't think that that's exactly the case here, but I'm ok with it too. :)

I dreamt that Dirt 3 would bring all the Dirt 2 tracks plus the new ones. I've never been so disappointed...

Loore, have you said yet what it that ui thing in the bottom left corner in the latest video? Is that a setup thing?

It's Team Mate controls, you can tell them to defend / attack :)

I just want to voice my support for Codies on this and I'm very much looking forward to late June. GRID 1 was one of my all time favorite racers and while Grid 2 fell short, it was still a gorgeous game to play. This looks like a huge step in the proper direction and will be a day 1 purchase for me.

Thank you :)

I'm travelling atm so apologies for delay in answers / replies.

The "granTurismoed" cockpit cam is kinda disappointing. I thought that when it was supposed to come back, it would come back in style, and be as good, or better, than in SHIFT2 at least. But this looks quite poor.
I guess I will wait for proper nextgen PC GRID 3. SHIFT 2 and PCARS spoiled me too much.
I made a few videos from SHIFT 2, in my opinion until PCars come out, this game is still unparalleled when it comes to racing feel and immersion. I just love its helmet cam:

Anybody from north america has any experience with them?

And I wonder if all the pre-ordered versions are the "Black Edition"? Since it's not mentioned on the site.

Pre-order bonuses are hardly earth shattering:

  • Exclusive Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series car
  • Exclusive Black Edition white Ravenwest liveries for Black Edition cars
  • Online premium sponsors
  • 20 extra ‘Black Edition’ online livery patterns
  • 10 new sponsors with objectives

I'd like the Merc SLS, but if I miss out it's no big deal.

This looks really nice.

I have to pick up F1 2013 Complete Edition & GRID 2 first though. I recently checked out X360 demo for GRID 2 and really liked the handling model -- feels like Ridge Racer with real cars.

Splitting up preorder bonuses is stupid as shit anyway, way to piss me off even more.

Silly question but I'm mainly getting this because I need more racing games to play on PC.
Is this closer to Burnout's playstyle where it's arcade racer?

Nope. It's an arcade game with a strong foot on simulation, they say.

I've been granted a preview code for this game to write an article for a later date. And while I cannot say anything specific about the game until the embargo runs out, let me just say this; if you're a fan of the first game and was left disappointed by the second one, Autosport will soothe your wounds. :)

That's correct. Each track has its own look and feel though, Mont Tremblant is sunset for example while Brands Hatch is very dark in some parts.

You still have option to do an Endurance race in the day via custom cup if you wish.

Could you please update the headlights on cars, so that we can see more of the track from dashboard view, it may not be realistic, but it can strain our eyes (endurance especially), especially to us with bad eyes

Wait....wat....omg

Repost just in case my earlier post was missed.

1. Will the game support the ps4 controller?
2. Will the game support custom soundtracks?

Amazing cars there.

I lapped that bad boy thousands of times in Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli - awesome track
Day 1

Same here - Mont Treblant, Virginia Raceway and Mugello - Trio Fantasticus. FCC had amazing tracks.

Also from the blog:

So what makes an Endurance race special?

  • Large grid sizes (up to 16 cars offline, 12 players online)
  • Long, high speed races featuring tyre wear (up to 40 minutes long)
  • AI run multiple strategies
  • Cars of similar or pre-defined specification
  • Sports tuned vehicles with lots of grip
  • Practice, Qualifying and Race format
  • Rolling Starts
  • Focus on night time races

It took "just" two GRIDS to reach the TOCA levels ;)

Great work,

I'm encouraged by the lack of Indianapolis. Please maintain this standard.

Personally I'm encouraged by the lack of Silverstone.... Even if I'm SURE it will be in the game... Seriously the owners must be giving away licenses for free or something, it's in every single game and I never thought it was a particularly good track (way too flat).

I would bet a body part that Indy will be in, based on the fact that the Dallara Indycar is confirmed (first image on OP), and that ovals have been mentioned by someone from Codies on the official forums.

I really don't mind Indianapolis... Well the road circuit anyway. The oval gets borring after a while.
