Have you jumped on the foldable phone bandwagon yet?

I would like to know what benefits the foldability provides from someone who has used one, if any.

I use mine unfolded every day, though the majority of my use is in folded mode.

Unfolded usage:
  • Art
  • Handwritten notetaking
  • Photo and videoing editing
  • Kanji study app (drawing)
  • Playing three Niantic games (they pause if swapped between)
  • Gaming
  • Watching videos while reading the comments (especially live)
  • Reading books and manga - seriously it's great to hold like a small book (though an E-Ink device is much easier on the eyes)
  • Chat apps when I have several conversations going on at once
  • Bigger touchpad using DeX with my XR glasses
  • In a pinch, work where I need to compare things
    • Reference on one side, notes on the other (with a external keyboard
    • Video call on top, reference, notes, or even both on the bottom
Hyperbolically, I couldn't live without it.

Have owned mine for the past 5 months and there are absolutely none. It's more for the novelty of it, I'm just grateful the software doesn't differ from a regular phone. Switching to a regular s25 that's releasing soon.

To each their own. The S25 has to be the most boring release by Samsung yet.

Originally got the Samsung Fold 4, and recently upgraded to the Fold 6. At this point, I can't picture going back to a regular phone. Why compromise and be stuck with a small screen, when you get have a huge one (and still go small and function as a one handed device when need).

The only very minor issue I had was the pre-installed screen protector finally started peeling apart from the center crease just shy of two years after getting the Fold 4- just peeled the screen protector off (don't normally use them anyway unless they come with a device and I and still had a fully functional phone afterwards). As long as Samsung still has their generous trade in program (which offsets a ton of the admittedly very high cost of the Fold phones), I see no reason why I won't have a Fold 8 in two years.

I just wish they'd make it a little thicker, so that the Fold had great cameras, a stylus silo, and more battery. A microSD reader and camera button wouldn't go amiss either.

Unfortunately, all the reviewers and commentators are still obsessed with thinness.

My top issue with foldables is duability. The fact that it's common for the screens to fail under normal usage and the fact you can damage the inside screen with just a push of a finger nail is what keeps me away.

Second is the cameras aren't as good. I love taking pictures when hiking and biking and want the near best I can get in a phone.

Well, and the price as it's near double of what I am going to pay for the S25U, but if the above wasn't an issue at all, I would consider it anyways. With the issues? No way. I'm not paying $1200 (price discounts, never pay full price) for something that could fail with how I use my current phone. I never take warranties for these devices as that jacks up the price even more.

The idea of the folding phone I absolutely love though. Making the screen bigger for more screen realistate? Heck yeah, bigger is better and it still keeps the portability of a regular phone.

I agree with you on the camera front but durability has gotten alot better depends on the brand. Did you see the video I posted?

Then again...

When Steve Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011, Apple’s market capitalization was approximately $350 billion. At the time, the company recorded annual revenue of $108 billion for fiscal year 2011.
As of January 2025, Apple’s market capitalization has grown to $3.35 trillion, nearly a tenfold increase since Jobs’ death. For fiscal year 2024, Apple reported annual revenue of $391 billion, more than tripling its revenue since 2011.
Its market capitalization is inflated as fuck, then. If it only increased revenue by 3 times why is it worth ten times it was at 100 billion in revenue. The math isn't mathing.

I still bemoan trading in my slightly cracked Fold 3 just to get a good deal on an S23 (and now I'm on a Pixel 8). If you've ever had a taste of folded phones, you understand the benefits they provide.

Had the Fold 2 and the Fold 4. I really loved them but the Fold 4 was starting to have issues a year in. Eventually I had to get rid of it due to issues with the screens glitching and causing the phone to freeze and require a hard reboot. Other people who had the Fold 4 had similar issues.

I went to the Galaxy S24 Ultra and really enjoy it. I miss the larger screen and that folding function but I don't know if I go back.

The upcoming OnePlus Open 2 vs Samsung's latest. Crease is almost not there. Someone was saying that another company which has yet to release a foldable would solve the crease in a few years when they release theirs. Im getting really close to pulling the trigger on a foldable.

For reference here is a pic next to the iPad Pro which is 5.1mm thin.

1. How long will it remain that flat.
2. I want better cameras and more battery, among things, not fucking thinness.
3. No SPen; no buy. No, MPP pens are shit.

1. The crease starts out flatter than Samsung's so it stands to reason it will remain less visible.

2. The phone will have 3 50 megapixel cameras and a 5700 mAh battery with 80 watt wired and 50 watt wireless charging for reference the Samsung Galaxy S24 has a 5000 mAh battery with 45 watt wired and 15 watt wireless charging. The IPhone 16 Pro max has a 4685 mAh battery with 30 watt wired charging and 25 watt wireless charging using a magsafe charger.

3. Funny you should mention the S pen because Samsung just gimped the S25 Ultra S pen by removing the Bluetooth functionality. The previous Oppo supported a stylus on inner and outer screens this version should also but we don't know yet the z fold 6 only supports the stylus on the inner screen.

I bought a Samsung Fold 4 a couple years ago. Was the best phone I ever owned. Then it broke after a year of use. The main screen just went black and never worked again. I'm sticking to non-foldable phones for the foreseeable future.

1. Completely missing my point.

2. MP count is only one messure of the quality of a camera. Higher wattage charging, especially wireless charging, degrades batteries faster. My phones can all charge faster, but I've turned it all off.

3. The main point of the SPen is the EMR technology which uses a superconductor, not a battery. For phones only Samsung uses it. Yes, the loss of the Bluetooth features on the S25 is a shame, but not Fold has had those features.

I don't like foldables. I'll just stick to a slab form factor. Looking into replacing my old iPhone with a Librem 5, which is a modular, repairable phone designed to run Linux out of the box. Perfect for an open-source nerd like me.

again... I think the goal should not be to improve bendable screens, but to develop modular screens that clip together, through a guided mechanism while you open it, without a visible seam, similar to how Micro LED TVs currently work.

it's all nice and dandy that the creases get less visible with each year. but as long as a finger nail can scratch the screen, I wouldn't ever get one of these. one unfortunate grain of sand and that screen is damaged.
soft plastic touchscreens on an everyday device would be annoying to keep pristine imo.

Your moving the goal posts but I do agree about the mp only being one measure of quality Samsung's 200 megapixel camera is not even in the top 5 phone cameras

Hopefully, Apple eventually "innovates" its way into foldables - I'd jump on board in a heartbeat.

I haven't moved a single goalpost.

You don't understand some of the technology involved and where I was commenting on something different (charging rates) it was in response to your diversionary tactics.

What exactly am I not understanding? You asked for bigger batteries, faster charging and better cameras and I posted that this foldable will have that but somehow that's not good enough and no your phone cant charge faster than what the specs state. I agreed with you that megapixel count is not the be-all end-all of camera quality and I used Samsung as an example

I agree, though. I think the folds are thin enough as it is now. Just keep them the same thickness as now and try and increase battery capacity every year.

Well, fuck me :

Snapdragon 8 elite
Almost invisible crease
5.600 mAh battery
16GB RAM
512GB storage
80W charging

Its going to be less than 1 mm thicker than a Galaxy or IPhone when folded. Now if they can have a camera as good or nearly as good as my Vivo X100 pro I'll bite.

For reference it's barely thicker than the usb-c port when unfolded

Who the hell is running OnePlus? They've decided not to release this phone in America at least not this year. 🤣 Tinfoil hat time I think Samsung has someone working at OnePlus. At least I can import the Chinese version if I decide to pull the trigger.
